Abstract

Using a numerical solution of the Liouville equation, the process of variation of polarization characteristics in an ensemble of He atoms in the 33 S 1 state is studied on coherent population of this level from the 23 P state by a finite-width line in the presence of a strong magnetic field.

Effect of a longitudinal strong magnetic field on the polarization characteristics of H α emission

Sergei A. Kazantsev, A. G. Petrashen

The effect of the magnetic field whose direction is parallel to the direction of the collision-induced alignment on the polarization characteristics of emission of ensembles of excited particles is considered. Concrete calculations were performed for the emission corresponding to the transitions between the levels of the fine structure of the states of atomic hydrogen with n =3 and n =2.

Excitation of coherent atomic states by strong magnetic field pulses

G. V. Skrotskiǐ, G. I. Solomakho

An analysis is made of the action of short magnetic field pulses, sufficiently strong to break the hyperfine coupling, on an ensemble of noninteracting atoms. This action alters the polarized states of individual atoms and changes the polarization of the whole ensemble. The ensemble assumes coherent states which correspond to the appearance of nonzero nondiagonal elements in the density matrix. This is manifested by the modulation of resonance fluorescence and may be observed experimentally.

Dispersion of populations of a multilevel system in a strong field of laser emission and a magnetic field

T. Ya. Karagodova

Using the theory and the calculation method developed previously, numerical experiments on the study of dispersion of populations of a multilevel atomic system in strong fields of laser radiation in resonance with adjacent transitions and in a constant magnetic field are conducted. The effect of the magnetic field strength on the character of coherent population trapping in a multilevel system is studied. It is shown that the effect, depending on the magnetic field strength, may be observed for both and for one of the magnetic sublevels of the level that is doubly degenerate in the magnetic quantum number, for which resonance fluorescence is studied. The possibility of obtaining population inversion for magnetic sublevels in the excited state of a multilevel atom under an appropriate choice of parameters is demonstrated.

Coherent population trapping in a gas of excited atoms

Petr M. Anisimov, Ахмеджанов Ринат Абдулхаевич, I. V. Zelenskii +2 more

Coherent population trapping in a gas discharge was studied for transitions between excited levels of neon atoms. Resonances corresponding to the arising of coherent population trapping in the Λ and V schemes for Zeeman sublevels of the lower and upper working states were observed in the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field. The effect of nonlinear polarization plane rotation under coherent population trapping conditions was studied. The possibility of using the results obtained in this work for diagnostics of local magnetic fields and other plasma parameters in gas discharges was considered.
