Spatial Light Modulators for the Manipulation of Individual Atoms

Lukas Brandt, Cecilia Muldoon, Tobias Thiele +3 more

We propose a novel dipole trapping scheme using spatial light modulators (SLM) for the manipulation of individual atoms. The scheme uses a high numerical aperture microscope to map the intensity distribution of a SLM onto a cloud of cold atoms. The regions of high intensity act as optical dipole force traps. With a SLM fast enough to modify the trapping potential in real time, this technique is well suited for the controlled addressing and manipulation of arbitrarily selected atoms.

Dynamic high-speed spatial manipulation of cold atoms using acousto-optic and spatial light modulation

Fredrik K. Fatemi, Mark Bashkansky, Zachary Dutton

We demonstrate an experimental technique for high-resolution, high-speed spatial manipulation of atom clouds. By combining holographically engineered laser beams from a spatial light modulator with off-axis shear mode acousto-optic deflectors, we manipulate 1 x 3 arrays of cold atoms with individual site addressability. Additionally, we demonstrate smooth 2-dimensional motion of atomic ensembles, and the ability to guide multiple atomic ensembles independently.

High-speed dynamic spatial control of cold atoms with combined acousto-optic and spatial light modulation

Fredrik K. Fatemi, Mark Bashkansky, Zachary Dutton

We demonstrate an experimental technique for manipulating atom clouds with high-speed and high resolution. By combining holographically engineered laser beams from a spatial light modulator with acousto-optic deflection, we manipulate the spatial locations of multiple cold atom clouds held in dark optical traps with individual site control. Additionally, we demonstrate smooth 2-dimensional motion of atomic ensembles.
