Abstract

We examine the phase separation effects in a class of models developed for description of superconductors with local electron pairing: (i) the extended attractive Hubbard model, (ii) the model of hard-core charged bosons on a lattice. We analyse the behaviour of various superfluid characteristics as well as the evolution of the phase diagrams with increasing external magnetic field.

The magnetic field induced phase separation in a model of a superconductor with local electron pairing

Konrad Jerzy Kapcia, Stanisław Robaszkiewicz

We have studied the extended Hubbard model with pair hopping in the atomic limit for arbitrary electron density and chemical potential and focus on paramagnetic effects of the external magnetic field. The Hamiltonian considered consists of (i) the effective on-site interaction U and (ii) the intersite charge exchange interactions I, determining the hopping of electron pairs between nearest-neighbour sites. The phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this model have been determined within the variational approach (VA), which treats the on-site interaction term exactly and the intersite interactions within the mean-field approximation. Our investigation of the general case shows that the system can exhibit not only the homogeneous phases-superconducting (SS) and non-ordered (NO)-but also the phase separated states (PS: SS-NO). Depending on the values of interaction parameters, the PS state can occur in higher fields than the SS phase (field induced PS). Some ground state results beyond the VA are also presented.

Superfluid properties of the extended Hubbard model with intersite electron pairing

R. Micnas, B. Tobijaszewska

We study the superfluid properties of short-coherence-length superconductors described by the extended Hubbard model with on-site repulsive and intersite attractive interaction. We have analysed the superfluid stiffness and thermodynamic properties of the model versus electron concentration and pairing interaction on a two-dimensional square lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbour hopping. The effects of phase fluctuations on anisotropic superconductivity of extended s-and d x 2 − y 2 -wave type were examined within the Kosterlitz–Thouless (KT) scenario. The KT critical temperatures were determined and compared with those from the BCS–Hartree–Fock approximation. The Uemura-type plots, i.e. the critical temperature versus zero-temperature phase stiffness, were obtained for both extended s- and d-wave pairings. The states with mixed (s ∗ and d x 2 − y 2 ) symmetry, and in particular the time-reversal breaking state of s + id symmetry, were analysed and the phase diagrams taking into account these states are presented. We also briefly discuss the crossover from BCS to local pair superconductivity for the d x 2 − y 2 -wave pairing. A comparison of the theoretical results with the experimental data, in particular those of T c versus λ −2 (0), for high- T c cuprate superconductors is made.

Superconducting properties of the attractive Hubbard model: A slave-boson study

Bogdan R. Bułka, Stanisl aw Robaszkiewicz

The superfluid characteristics of the attractive Hubbard model are analyzed for any coupling |U| and arbitrary electron concentration (0n2) by means of the slave-boson mean-field method and also by the perturbative treatment of the strong-coupling limit. The slave boson method takes into account correlations of electrons and yields a reliable description of the crossover from BCS-type superconductivity to local pair (composite bosons) superconductivity with increasing |U|. The results for the ground state (the free energy, the gap in the excitation spectrum) and the electromagnetic characteristics (the critical magnetic field, the London penetration depth, the coherence length) are compared with those obtained by the Hartree-Fock approximation and by the self-consistent second-order perturbation theory in the weak-coupling limit as well as with those obtained using perturbational approaches in the strong-coupling limit. We show that the slave-boson method, in contrast to the Hartree-Fock approximation, gives credible results for all investigated quantities in the whole interaction range, interpolating smoothly between the BCS and local pair regimes. A comparison of theoretical predictions for our simple model with experimental data for various families of short-coherence-length superconductors suggests that the best agreement can be obtained for intermediate values of the local attraction. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Phase separation in a lattice model of a superconductor with pair hopping

Konrad Jerzy Kapcia, Stanisław Robaszkiewicz, Roman Micnas

We have studied the extended Hubbard model with pair hopping in the atomic limit for arbitrary electron density and chemical potential. The Hamiltonian considered consists of (i) the effective on-site interaction U and (ii) the intersite charge exchange interactions I, determining the hopping of electron pairs between nearest-neighbour sites. The model can be treated as a simple effective model of a superconductor with very short coherence length in which electrons are localized and only electron pairs have a possibility of transferring. The phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this model have been determined within the variational approach, which treats the on-site interaction term exactly and the intersite interactions within the mean-field approximation. We have also obtained rigorous results for a linear chain (d = 1) in the ground state. Moreover, at T = 0 some results derived within the random phase approximation (and the spin-wave approximation) for d = 2 and 3 lattices and within the low-density expansions for d = 3 lattices are presented. Our investigation of the general case (as a function of the electron concentration n and as a function of the chemical potential μ) shows that, depending on the values of interaction parameters, the system can exhibit not only the homogeneous phases, superconducting (SS) and nonordered (NO), but also the phase separated states (PS: SS-NO). The system considered exhibits interesting multicritical behaviour including tricritical points.

Local spin clustering and phase separation in the Hubbard model

Antonis N. Andriotis, Eleftherios N. Economou, C. M. Soukoulis

The authors use an unrestricted self-consistent mean-field approach to the one-dimensional periodic Hubbard model to study its ground-state phase diagram. Their approach allows one to incorporate spin and electron correlations as well as spin and charge fluctuations. The authors find that a homogeneous antiferromagnetic state exists only at half-filling, where the state is also insulating. Off half-filling, it was found that the ground state of the Hubbard model consists of clusters with different magnetic and charge properties. For certain values of the parameters of the system the cluster formation develops to a full phase separation. The effects of the intersite repulsive or attractive interaction on the ground-state properties were also examined. Implications of the authors results for the existence of a superconducting ground state as well as comparison with other studies will be briefly discussed.

Superconductivity in the Hubbard model with pair hopping

S. Robaszkiewicz, Bogdan R. Bułka

The phase diagrams and superconducting properties of the extended Hubbard model with pair hopping interaction, i.e., the Penson-Kolb-Hubbard model are studied. The analysis of the model is performed for d-dimensional hypercubic lattices, including $d=1$ and $d=\ensuremath{\infty},$ by means of the (broken symmetry) Hartree-Fock approximations and, for $d=\ensuremath{\infty},$ by the slave-boson mean-field method. For $d=1,$ at half filling the phase diagram is shown to consist of nine different phases including two superconducting states with center-of-mass momentum $q=0$ and $q=Q$ $(\ensuremath{\eta}$ pairing), site and bond-located antiferromagnetic and charge-density wave states as well as three mixed phases with coexisting site and bond orderings. The stability range of the bond-type orderings shrinks with increasing lattice dimensionality d and for $d=\ensuremath{\infty}$ the corresponding diagram consists of four phases only, involving exclusively site-located orderings. Comparing the pair hopping model with the attractive Hubbard model we found in both cases gradual evolution from the BCS-like limit to the tightly bound pairs regime and a monotonic increase of the gap in the excitation spectrum with increasing coupling. However, the dynamics of electron pairs in both models is qualitatively different, which results in different dependences of condensation energies and critical temperatures on interaction parameters as well as in different electrodynamic properties, especially in a strong coupling regime.
