Hidden Time Reversal in Driven X X Z Spin Chains: Exact Solutions and New Dissipative Phase Transitions

Mingxing Yao, Andrew Lingenfelter, Ron Belyansky +2 more

We show that several models of interacting XXZ spin chains subject to boundary driving and dissipation possess a subtle kind of time-reversal symmetry, making their steady states exactly solvable. We focus on a model with a coherent boundary drive, showing that it exhibits a unique continuous dissipative phase transition as a function of the boundary drive amplitude. This transition has no analog in the bulk closed system or in incoherently driven models. We also show the steady-state magnetization exhibits a surprising fractal dependence on interaction strength, something previously associated with less easily measured infinite-temperature transport quantities (the Drude weight). Our exact solution also directly yields driven-dissipative double-chain models that have pure, entangled steady states that are current carrying.

Signatures of topological quantum phase transitions in driven and dissipative qubit arrays

Yuli Dong, Titus Neupert, R. Chitra +1 more

We study photonic signatures of symmetry broken and topological phases in a driven, dissipative circuit QED realization of spin-1/2 chains. Specifically, we consider the transverse-field XY model and a dual model with three-spin interactions. The former has a ferromagnetic and a paramagnetic phase, while the latter features, in addition, a symmetry protected topological phase. Using the method of third quantization, we calculate the nonequilibrium steady state of the open spin chains for arbitrary system sizes and temperatures. We find that the bilocal correlation function of the spins at both ends of the chain provides a sensitive measure for both symmetry-breaking and topological phase transitions of the systems, but no universal means to distinguish between the two types of transitions. Both models have equivalent representations in terms of free Majorana fermions, which host zero, one and two topological Majorana end modes in the paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and symmetry protected topological phases, respectively. The correlation function we study retains its bilocal character in the fermionic representation, so that our results are equally applicable to the fermionic models in their own right. We propose a photonic realization of the dissipative transverse-field XY model in a tunable setup, where an array of superconducting transmon qubits is coupled at both ends to a photonic microwave circuit.

Signatures of Quantum Phase Transitions in Driven Dissipative Spin Chains

Mostafa Ali, Naushad Ahmad Kamar, Alireza Seif +1 more

Open driven quantum systems have defined a powerful paradigm of nonequilibrium phases and phase transitions; however, quantum phase transitions are generically not expected in this setting due to the decohering effect of dissipation. In this Letter, we consider a quantum Ising model subject to bulk dissipation (at rate Γ) and show that, although the correlation length remains finite (hence no phase transition), it develops a pronounced peak close to the ground-state quantum critical point. While standard techniques fail in this regime, we develop a versatile analytical approach that becomes exact with vanishing dissipation (Γ→0 but finite Γt). On a technical level, our approach builds on previous work where the state of the system is described by a slowly evolving generalized Gibbs ensemble that accounts for the integrability of the Hamiltonian while treating dissipation perturbatively. Finally, we demonstrate a kind of universality in that integrability-breaking perturbations of the Hamiltonian lead to the same behavior. To this end, we first show that the steady state of a chaotic Ising Hamiltonian under local Markovian dissipation that preserves the Ising symmetry, and in the limit Γ→0, is identical to that of quench dynamics in the absence of dissipation. This intriguing connection then allows us to draw on recent findings about quantum phase transition signatures in quench dynamics.
