We have measured the effect of the transfer of excitation on the population of the
33D state of helium. Through careful diagnosis of a proton beam passing through a long target chamber containing helium gas, we have been able to separate the various contributions to the light intensity from the
33D state. Our measurements were performed at target-gas pressures roughly two orders of magnitude lower than those of previously reported measurements. We measure the summation of the excitation-transfer cross sections ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c}(n)$ for the transfer from an
n1P state to the corresponding
n3F state times the branching ratio
Bn for radiative cascade to the
33D state, and obtain $\ensuremath{\Sigma}{B}_{n}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c}(n)=2.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}12}$
cm2. This measurement enables us to relate the excitation transferred to the
33D state
QT(33D) to the excitation cross section of the
41P state $\ensuremath{\sigma}(4^{1}P)$. We obtain ${Q}_{T} (3^{3}D)=(1.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}15} {\mathrm{cm}}^{3})N\ensuremath{\sigma}(4^{1}P)$, an expression, which for the low pressures used in this experiment, is linear in the number density
N.
We have measured Lyman-\ensuremath{\alpha} quantum beats from coherently excited hydrogen atoms produced in 85--235-keV proton collisions with a thin helium jet target. Intensity measurements of the radiation emitted at 90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to the beam direction as a function of distance downstream from the target in electric fields both parallel and antiparallel to the beam axis allow extraction of the coherence between the s and p states by Eck's method [Phys. Rev. Lett. 31, 270 (1973)]. Because the jet target allows the collisions to occur in the applied field, we have eliminated the problems associated with field inhomogeneities when gas target cells are used. A strong-intensity peak emitted by excited helium in the target allows a determination of the starting point of the evolution in the field as well as a determination of the effects of experimental averaging. We present the s-p coherence parameters as a function of the projectile energy and compare them with recent theoretical calculations.
