Virtues and flaws of the Pauli potential

Jutri Taruna, J. Piekarewicz, M. Ángeles Pérez-García

Quantum simulations of complex fermionic systems suffer from a variety of challenging problems. In an effort to circumvent these challenges, simpler ‘semi-classical’ approaches have been used to mimic fermionic correlations through a fictitious ‘Pauli potential’ . In this contribution we examine two issues. First, we address some of the inherent difficulties in a widely used version of the Pauli potential. Second, we refine such a potential in a manner consistent with the most basic properties of a cold Fermi gas, such as its momentum distribution and its two-body correlation function.

Doublon Formation by Ions Impacting a Strongly Correlated Finite Lattice System

Karsten Balzer, Maximilian Rodriguez Rasmussen, Niclas Schlünzen +2 more

Strongly correlated systems of fermions have a number of exciting collective properties. Among them, the creation of a lattice that is occupied by doublons, i.e., two quantum particles with opposite spins, offers interesting electronic properties. In the past a variety of methods have been proposed to control doublon formation, both, spatially and temporally. Here, a novel mechanism is proposed and verified by exact diagonalization and nonequilibrium Green functions simulations-fermionic doublon creation by the impact of energetic ions. We report the formation of a nonequilibrium steady state with homogeneous doublon distribution. The effect should be particularly important for strongly correlated finite systems, such as graphene nanoribbons, and directly observable with fermionic atoms in optical lattices.

Superfluid Local Density Approximation: A Density Functional Theory Approach to the Nuclear Pairing Problem

Aurel Bulgac

I describe the foundation of a Density Functional Theory approach to include pairing correlations, which was applied to a variety of systems ranging from dilute fermions, to neutron stars and finite nuclei. Ground state properties as well as properties of excited states and time-dependent phenomena can be achieved in this manner within a formalism based on microscopic input.
