Quantum Phenomena of Trapped Ions

Abstract

In this paper recent experiments with single trapped ions are reviewed. They deal with the spectrum of the resonance fluorescence of a single ion, the ion trap laser and with experiments towards a new frequency standard on the basis of a single In + ion. The experiments demonstrate essential ingredients necessary to realize quantum logic gates using trapped ions. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

We briefly review the development and theory of an experiment to investigate quantum computation with trapped calcium ions. The ion trap, laser and ion requirements are determined, and the parameters required for simple quantum logic operations are described. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. Single atom experiments in cavities and traps

In this paper recent experiments with the one-atom maser or micromaser performed by our group will be reviewed, as well as experiments with single ions in traps. The discussion is limited to results relevant in connection with the experimental realization of a quantum computer. The principle of the electrode configuration of the ion trap used for the investigation of the spectrum of resonance fluorescence described in the second part of this paper has also been used to realize a linear trap. This work on resonance fluorescence and the more recent work on ordered structures in a miniature trap being produced recently are the basis for the use of such a set-up for quantum computers.

Quantum measurements and new concepts for experiments with trapped ions

Experiments with individual trapped ions are ideally suited to investigate fundamental issues of quantum mechanics such as the measurement process. At the same time electrodynamically trapped ions have been used with great success to demonstrate quantum logic operations and are a candidate for scalable quantum computing. In this article a brief introduction is given to the basic steps that constitute a quantum measurement; in particular, measurements on single quantum systems are considered. Then experiments with single Yb+ are reviewed demonstrating the quantum Zeno paradox, as well as an experiment where an adaptive algorithm for quantum state estimation of qubits was implemented. In the last section of this article -- devoted to experiments and new ideas related to quantum information processing (QIP) with trapped ions -- the realization of various quantum channels using a hyperfine qubit of Yb+ is briefly discussed. Then a concept for QIP with trapped ions is reviewed where rf or microwave radiation is used instead of laser light for coherent manipulation of a collection of ions. In a suitably modified trap the ions form an artificial ion "molecule" to which the techniques developed in nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance experiments can be directly applied. Finally, coherent excitation of optical electric quadrupole transitions in Yb+ and Ba+ is reported. In addition, robust Raman cooling of a pair of Ba+ ions is reviewed.

Laser experiments with single atoms and the test of basic quantum phenomena

In this paper, recent experiments of our group performed with single atoms in cavities and traps are summarized. In the first part, experiments with the one-atom maser are described dealing with the generation of number states of the photon field. In the second part of the paper, the spectroscopy of a single trapped In + ion is discussed being performed with the aim of realizing a new frequency standard in the optical range.

Spectroscopy with single-trapped ions

In this paper experiments with single trapped ions are reviewed. They are performed with the aim of developing a new frequency standard and to perform cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments with single ions. For a new optical frequency standard we are investigating the 5s21S0 implied by 5s5p3P0 transition of a single trapped laser-cooled 115In(superscript + ion. This line with a natural linewidth of only 0.8 Hz is highly immune to systematic frequency shifts. For sideband laser cooling and fluorescence detection of the indium ion the 5s21S0 implied by 5s5p3P1 transition at 230.6 nm is used. Temperatures below 100 (mu) K and a mean vibrational quantum number <n><1 of the ion in the trap have been reached. For the clock transition a resolution of 1.3 multiplied by 10-13 (linewidth 170 Hz) has been obtained so far, limited by the short term frequency fluctuations of the clock laser. The absolute frequency of the 1S0 implied by 3P0 transition was measured by making a link to the reference frequency of the methane-stabilized HeNe laser using a frequency chain. In the second part of the paper the present status of the experiments on the ion trap laser are briefly described.
