The stability of matter-wave solitons in 2D linear and nonlinear optical lattices

Chen Hai-Jun, Xiangfu Li

By means of variational solution and direct numerical simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), we have studied the stability of matter-wave solitons in two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensations (BECs), with 2D linear and nonlinear optical lattices (OLs). Using the static variational approach and Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion necessary for stability, we obtain the stability condition for solitons in different combinations of OL's parameters. We show that the 2D linear and nonlinear optical lattices allow us to stabilize 2D solitons for both attractive and repulsive interactions. We also study the time-evolution problems of 2D BECs, using the time-dependent variational approach and numerical solution of GPE for 2D linear and nonlinear OLs. Very good agreement between the results corresponding to both treatments is observed.

Study of localized solutions of the nonlinear discrete model for dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice by the homoclinic orbit method

Azeddine Messikh, Bakhram Umarov

It is well known that the dynamics of the Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in an optical lattice can be described in tight-binding approximation by the discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation (DNLSE) [1,2]. This model opens the way to study different aspects of the BEC dynamics in an optical lattice, such as discrete solitons and nonlinear localized modes and their stability and dynamics, modulational instability, superfluid-insulator transition, etc.

Matter wave compactons in deep optical lattices with strong nonlinearity management

Mario Salerno, F. Kh. Abdullaev

Compacton matter waves are considered in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) and in binary BEC mixtures, trapped in deep optical lattices in the presence of strong and rapid periodic time modulations of the atomic scattering length, are considered. For this, we derive vector averaged discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations (DNLSE) and show that compacton solutions of different types can exist as stable excitations.Stability properties are studied by linear analysis and by direct numerical integrations of the DNLSE system.
