Abstract

We present a quantum nonlinear model of two-wave mixing in a lossless photorefractive medium. A set of equations describing the quantum nonlinear coupling for the field operators is obtained. It is found that, to the second power term, the commutation relationship is maintained. The expectation values for the photon number concur with those of the classical electromagnetic theory when the initial intensities of the two beams are strong. We also calculate the quantum fluctuations of the two beams initially in the coherent state. With an appropriate choice of phase, quadrature squeezing or number state squeezing can be produced.

Degenerate four-wave mixing as a possible source of squeezed-state light

Roy S. Bondurant, Prem Kumar, Jeffrey H. Shapiro +1 more

The suitability of degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) as a source of squeezed-state (two-photon coherent state) light is investigated, both theoretically and experimentally. In previous semiclassical theory, which neglected pump quantization and loss in the nonlinear medium, Yuen and Shapiro [Opt. Lett. 4, 334 (1979)] showed that such states would be generated by 50%-50% combination of the transmitted probe (TP) and the phase-conjugate (PC) output beams of DFWM. Here the effects of quantum fluctuations in the amplitudes and phases of the pump beams are calculated in a traveling-wave finite-interaction-length DFWM configuration. It is shown that in the limit of strong pump beams and weak nonlinear coupling, the classical-pumps assumption of Yuen and Shapiro is valid. With use of this assumption, loss in the nonlinear medium is incorporated into the model by coupling the interacting modes to a set of reservoir modes. It is shown that loss presents an absolute limit on the degree of squeezing that can be achieved with DFWM. Also, for comparison with experimental work, the photoelectron statistics of the TP, PC, and 50%-50% combination modes are calculated for lossy DFWM; significant deviations are found from the predictions for lossless operation. Quantum-noise measurements on the PC and TP beams generated in sodiumvapor DFWM are described. The mixer is pumped and probed by the nearly transform-limited pulses produced by a continuous-wave-oscillator-pulse-amplifier chain dye laser at 589 nm wave-length. The normalized second-factorial moment ${g}_{2}$ of the PC and TP beams is determined from photoelectron-counting measurements. Inability to simultaneously achieve high DFWM reflectivity and acceptably low scattered-plus-fluorescent background, coupled with low photomultiplier quantum efficiency, restrict the experiment to a DFWM regime wherein theory predicts Poisson statistics. Experimental ${g}_{2}$ values corroborate this prediction, indicating that systematic and excess noises have been eliminated. No attempt was made to measure the quantum statistics of the 50%-50% combination mode.

Generation of number-phase squeezed states

Matthew J. Collett

A number-phase interaction is suggested that is analogous to the usual quadrature squeezing Hamiltonian for a mode of the electromagnetic field. Applied to an initial coherent state, it produces number-phase squeezed states. For moderate squeezing in either direction the result is close to a minimum uncertainty state. Two different ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(3)}$ approximations to the ideal interaction are found, appropriate for the different directions of squeezing. Even with the approximate interaction, the fluctuations in photon number can be reduced to less than half a photon for an arbitrarily intense field.

Squeezing Property of Coherent Light Coupled to a Nonlinear Medium of Inversion Symmetry

Hong Li

An analytical approach is adopted for the calculation of squeezed property of coherent light interacting with a nonlinear medium of inversion symmetry. A medium is called inversion symmetric if the potential energy remains invariant under parity transformation. Thus the even order susceptibilities would vanish for the medium and the leading contribution to the nolinear polarization due to the medium is the third order susceptibility. Therefore interaction Hamitonian of the single mode light field with the medium is proportional to the fourth power of the annihilation operator plus creation operator. This means is to take care all the non conserving energy terms for the calculation of the squeezing property of coherent light passing through the nonlinear medium of inversion symmetry. For a single mode light, two dimensionless quadrature operators are defined which are proportional to the usual position and momentum operators respectively. Using the Heisenberg operator equation of motion, the differential equation of the quadrature operators and the approximate solutions to the equations are got. Then the quantum fluctuations of the two quadratures are calculated. The result shows that the squeezing property of the two quadrature operators is controllable through changing the following parameters: coupling constant, mean photon number, light field frequency, and interaction time.

A Theoretical Study of the Generation of Squeezed-State Light via Degenerate Parametric Amplification

David D. Crouch

This thesis is primarily a theoretical study of degenerate parametric amplification as a means of generating squeezed-state light. i) A wideband traveling-wave formalism is developed for analyzing quantum mechanically a degenerate parametric amplifier. The formalism is based on spatial differential equations — spatial Langevin equations — that propagate temporal Fourier components of the field through the nonlinear medium. In addition to the parametric nonlinearity, the Langevin equations include absorption and associated fluctuations, dispersion, and pump quantum fluctuations. The dominant effects of dispersion and pump quantum fluctuations on the squeezing produced by a degenerate parametric amplifier are analyzed. ii) The wideband formalism of i) is used to carry out a more detailed analysis of the effects of phase mismatching. With the assumption of a lossless medium and a classical pump, we find that parametric amplification is capable of generating squeezed-state light over a wide band if materials with large χ(2) nonlinearities can be found, and that the squeezing bandwidth can be enhanced by phase mismatching away from degeneracy. iii) We consider again the effect of pump quantum fluctuations on the squeezing produced by parametric amplification. We perform discrete-mode calculations for a parametric amplifier with a quantum pump, and discuss some of the limitations of calculations of this sort in quantum optics. We derive stochastic differential equations (SDEs) for one- and two-mode parametric amplifiers, and from them obtain an iterative solution showing that pump quantum fluctuations impose a limitation on the degree of squeezing obtainable from a parametric amplifier. iv) A possible application of squeezing is considered; in particular, we study the effects of squeezing the intracavity noise in a laser oscillator. We solve the classical noise problem of a realistic laser model by making a bold — and possibly unrealizable — assumption, that the in-phase and quadrature Langevin sources which are responsible for the "noisiness" of the laser can be squeezed. We show that the effect of squeezing the in-phase quadrature is to reduce the phase noise, including the linewidth, of the laser but, due to amplitude-phase coupling, not to eliminate them altogether.

Quantum fluctations of coherent light in nonlinear media

Anirban Pathak

The interaction of coherent light with a nonlinear medium is modeled here by a general quantum anharmonic oscillator. The model is not exactly solvable in a closed analytical form. But we need operator solutions of the equations of motion corresponding to these models in order to study the quantum fluctuations of coherent light in nonlinear media. In the present work we derive approximate operator solutions. From these solutions we observe that there exists an apparent discrepancy between the solutions obtained by different techniques. We compare different solutions and conclude that all correct solutions are equivalent and the apparent discrepancy is due to the use of different ordering of the operators. We use these solutions to investigate the possibilities of observing different optical phenomena in a nonlinear dielectric medium. To be precise, we have studied quantum phase fluctuations of coherent light in a third order inversion symmetric nonlinear medium. Fluctuations in phase space quadrature for the same system are studied and the possibility of generating squeezed state is reported. Fluctuations in photon number are studied and the nonclassical phenomenon of antibunching is predicted. We have generalized the results obtained for third order nonlinear medium and have studied the interaction of an intense laser beam with a general (m-1)-th order nonlinear medium. Aharanov Anandan nonadiabatic geometric phase is also discussed in the context of (m-1)-th order nonlinear medium.

Quantum phase fluctuations and squeezing in degenerate four-wave mixing

Gerard J Milburn, Daniel F. Walls, M. D. Levenson

We consider the generation of squeezed states in degenerate four-wave mixing, retaining all significant phase-matched terms in the third-order polarization. It is shown that, for output modes combined with appropriate phase shifts, ideal squeezed states are produced when the pump field is treated classically. An approximation scheme is used to investigate the effect of pump-field quantization. We show that for reasonable crystal lengths, the effect of pump-field quantization is insignificant in the region of significant squeezing.
