Abstract

Abstract The present study addresses light propagation in both the positive- and negative-group-index regimes in a degenerate atomic system with four energy levels. Both the static magnetic field and the Doppler shifts play essential roles. Operating in an electromagnetically induced transparency configuration, we demonstrate that probe absorption characteristics and the group velocity index can be manipulated by combined control of the static magnetic field and two coupling laser fields. By selectively engaging one or both coupling fields, the magnetic field serves as a switching mechanism, toggling the atomic medium's optical behavior between transparent and absorptive states. Consequently, both the magnitude and sign of the group index can be adjusted, transitioning from positive to negative values or the reverse, based on whether the magnetic field is applied or removed. Additionally, temperature significantly influences both the optical properties and group index characteristics of the atomic medium. Given that our proposed system operates at room temperature, it is well-suited to practical experimental conditions and offers potential for deployment in optical storage technologies and quantum information processing applications.

Switching between slow light and fast light by static magnetic field in a degenerate four-level atomic system at room temperature

Nguyen Van Phu, Nguyen Huy Bang, Luong Thi Yen Nga +1 more

Abstract The optical response of a magnetic-degenerated four-level atom system to the two left and right circular polarization components of the probe field is represented at room temperature. The absorption spectrum and group index for the two polarization components of the probe field are controlled according to the static magnetic field and the coupling field under electromagnetically induced transparency condition. By varying the strength of the static magnetic field, the optical response of the atomic medium can be changed from transparency to absorption or vice versa and hence the amplitude of group index also changes from positive extreme to negative extreme or vice versa. The same phenomenon also occurs when changing the coupling field intensity. In addition, temperature also significantly influence on the optical response of the atomic medium, which changes not only the amplitude but also the sign of the group index as the temperature increases. Our analytical results can be useful for experimental observation and related applications of light group index/velocity at room temperature.

Knob of adjusting light group velocity in an inhomogeneously broadened degenerate two-level atomic medium by a magnetic field

Anh Nguyen Tuan, Thanh Thai Doan, Bang Nguyen Huy +2 more

Abstract We proposed a simple model for investigating subluminal and superluminal light propagation via an external magnetic field in an inhomogeneously broadened degenerate two-level atomic medium. We show that a magnetic field can be utilized as a knob to control the absorption/dispersion properties and group index of the medium. By changing the magnitude and reversing the direction of the magnetic field, the positive group index is converted to the negative group index at the center of the EIT window, corresponding with the propagation of a weak light pulse from subluminal to superluminal. Moreover, the influence of the Doppler broadening effect on the group index is also included, making the results approach to actual conditions. Therefore, the suggested model may be helpful for the application realization of optical storage in quantum computers and quantum information processing.

Controllable light group velocity in a degenerate two-level medium under the assistance of an external magnetic field

Dong Hoang Minh, Thai Doan Thanh, Nguyen Thi Thu Hien +3 more

In this work, we proposed a simple model for control of subluminal and superluminal light propagation via an external magnetic field in a lambda configuration degenerate two-level atomic medium. We show that the absorption-dispersion properties and group index under the influence of the strength of coupling laser and external magnetic fields are controlled. By changing the direction and magnitude of the magnetic field, the medium switches from transparency with normal dispersion to enhanced absorption with anomalous dispersion at the line center, corresponding with the transfer from slow light to fast light. This work may provide for the application realization of magneto-optic switches and storage devices in quantum information processing.

Influence of magnetic field on optical response in a degenerate four-level lambda-type atomic system

Nguyen Thuy Tram, Nguyen Thi Phuong Anh, Nguyen Thi Ngoc +6 more

We theoretically investigate the optical response of a degenerate four-level \(\Lambda\)-type atomic system under the influence of an external magnetic field. The applied magnetic field lifts the degeneracy of the ground sublevels via the Zeeman effect, thereby altering the two-photon resonance conditions for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) formation and causing the atomic response to evolve from single-EIT to double-EIT, accompanied by shifts in the EIT positions. Such variations in the EIT positions result in corresponding changes in the dispersion and group index curves, allowing the selection of desired frequency regions for different response regimes. As a result, the system can switch between transparency and absorption, as well as between slow and fast light. These findings highlight the feasibility of controlling light propagation via magnetic field, with potential applications in optical switching and quantum information technologies.

Controlling optical properties and optical bistability via an external magnetic field in a tripod-type atomic medium

Hoang Thi Huong, Le Nguyen Mai Anh, Le Thi Hoa Lai +5 more

We investigated control of optical bistability behavior based on the probe absorption and Kerr nonlinearity properties in a tripod-type degenerate four-level atom system under an external magnetic field. This excitation configuration can provide two transparent spectral regions on the probe absorption profile. It can be transitioned between the transparency and absorption regimes by turning on or off the magnetic field in different frequency domains. We can effortlessly transform one into two transparency windows, and vice versa, by modifying the intensity of the magnetic field. The investigations showed the enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity around one/two-EIT windows, thereby forming one/two-channel optical bistability in these frequency regions. In addition, the coupling field intensity, the probe frequency detuning, and the atomic cooperation parameter have also significantly influenced the absorption spectrum, Kerr nonlinearity, and optical bistability. The proposed model has useful applications for storage and optical switching, and nonlinear logic gates in optical communications processing.

Dynamic of two-channel pulse propagation in a tripod-type degenerate atomic medium

Phuong Le Thi Minh, Thanh Thai Doan, Hoang Minh Dong

We numerically investigate two-channel pulse propagation dynamics in a degenerate tripod-type four-level atomic medium under the combined influence of an external magnetic field and a relative phase. The results show that an external magnetic field is used as a “knob” to switch between transparent and absorptive regimes of the probe pulse by the on/off state of the magnetic field within suitable frequency and phase domains. By tuning the magnitude of the magnetic field, the transparency spectrum can be reversibly transformed between single- and double-window structures, enabling stable pulse propagation in a single- or dual-channel. In addition, the relative phase strongly modifies the probe absorption profile and provides an efficient means to control pulse propagation dynamics. These findings suggest promising applications in pulse propagation, multi-channel switching, and optical storage for communication systems.
