Quantum Technologies for Beyond 5G and 6G Networks: Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges

Engin Zeydan, Chamitha de Alwis, Rabia Khan +4 more

As the world prepares for the advent of 6G networks, quantum technologies are becoming critical enablers of the next generation of communication systems. This survey paper investigates the convergence of quantum technologies and 6G networks, focusing on their applications, opportunities and challenges. We begin with an examination of the motivations for integrating quantum technologies into 6G, investigating the potential to overcome the limits of classical computing and cryptography. We then highlight key research gaps, particularly in quantum communication, quantum computing integration and security enhancement. A comprehensive overview of quantum technologies relevant to 6G, including quantum communication devices, quantum computing paradigms, and hybrid quantum-classical approaches is provided. A particular focus is on the role of quantum technologies in enhancing 6G Radio Access Networks (RAN), 6G core and edge network optimization, and 6G security. The survey paper also explores the application of quantum cryptography with a focus on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), Quantum Secure Direct Communication (QSDC) and quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms and assesses their implementation challenges and potential impact on 6G networks. We also discuss the significant challenges associated with integrating quantum technologies into existing communications infrastructures, including issues of technological maturity, standardization, and economic considerations. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned from current research and outline future research directions to guide the ongoing development of quantum-enabled 6G networks.

Towards Quantum-Resilient Log Integrity in 5G/6G Mobile Network Protocol Analysis

Yusuf, Ramat, Abdulrahman, Ibrahim Abdul

As 5G networks mature and 6G technologies emerge, the integrity of log data becomes increasingly critical for network security, forensic analysis, and regulatory compliance. The advent of quantum computing poses unprecedented threats to current cryptographic mechanisms protecting log integrity in mobile network infrastructures. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of quantum threats to existing log integrity systems and proposes a novel quantum-resilient framework for maintaining tamper-evident logging in 5G/6G networks. We examine post-quantum cryptographic solutions, including lattice-based algorithms, blockchain integration, and hybrid approaches combining traditional and quantum-safe mechanisms. Our framework addresses key challenges including forward security, crash recovery, and real-time performance requirements while maintaining compatibility with existing 5G/6G protocol stacks. Through theoretical analysis and performance evaluation, we demonstrate that quantum-resilient log integrity can be achieved without compromising network performance, providing a foundation for secure next-generation mobile communications.

Quantum Communication Systems for Ensuring Secure 6G Network Infrastructure

Haranadha Reddy Busireddy Seshakagari, K. Reddy Madhavi, Nagaraj Ramrao +1 more

As sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks come into existence, there is more ever-growing demand for high-speed and secure communication than ever before. Conventional cryptographic methods are facing growing constraints to keep pace with the challenging reality of cyberattacks. Quantum-based communication technologies like quantum key distribution (QKD), quantum encryption, and quantum-resistant protocols provide an inherently secure means of transmitting data. This study examines how quantum communication technologies can be embedded within 6G architectures to provide enhanced data protection. With the help of AI and machine learning, 6G networks are able to anticipate threats and counter them, and quantum technologies offer unbreakable physical-layer encryption. Proposed work examines the security, architectural requirements, and implementation practicalities of this integration. In addition, we discussed the potential effect of quantum computing on present cryptographic techniques and describe future research directions for deployment at scale of quantum-secure communication in next-generation wireless systems.
