Decoherence induced by dipole-dipole couplings between atomic species in rare earth ion doped Y 2 SiO 5

Rare earth ion doped crystals are state-of-the-art platforms for processing quantum information, particularly thanks to their excellent optical and spin coherence properties at cryogenic temperatures. Experimental observations have shown that the application of a static magnetic bias field significantly improves the coherence times in the rare earth ions ensemble, but only a few studies have focused on its dependency as a function of both magnetic field direction and amplitude. This is especially true for magnetic field amplitudes under the mT, and for low magnetic dipole moment ions. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the magnetic field parameters and the decoherence caused by magnetic dipole-dipole coupling with the nearest-neighbor nuclear spins in the crystal. The primary non-Kramers rare earth ions investigated here are europium and praseodymium, but we also extend our study to the ytterbium Kramers ion due to its low magnetic dipole in the mT range. We perform theoretical investigations and simulations of the energy structure and coherence time evolution and identify good correspondences between experimental and simulated spin echo data. This work allows us to pinpoint the most relevant decoherence mechanisms in the considered magnetic field regime, and to predict favorable magnetic configurations.

Rare‐Earth‐Doped Y2SiO5 Crystal Directly Bonded on Glass for Efficient Optical Quantum Technologies Platform

A. Talneau, Sacha Welinski, Alban Ferrier

For high‐efficiency optical quantum technology platforms, bonding rare‐earth doped crystals on glass are of great interest, enabling the enhancement of the optical guided mode interaction with the active rare‐earth ions. Optical coherence lifetimes and stable operation are operated at very low temperature (3–4 K). Bonding should be preferably performed without adding any intermediate sticking layer in order not to hamper the optical mode distribution and propagation. Directly bonded Y2SiO5 crystal on a borosilicate glass is shown and the bonding mechanisms are discussed.

Few-photon storage on a second timescale by electromagnetically induced transparency in a doped solid

Marcel Hain, Markus Stabel, Thomas Halfmann

Abstract We present the experimental demonstration of light storage towards the single photon level at a long storage time by electromagnetically induced transparency in a rare-earth ion-doped Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystal. We apply decoherence control by static magnetic fields and appropriately designed radio-frequency composite pulse sequences to prolong the storage time in the memory. A rare-earth ion-doped filter crystal prepared by optical pumping serves to efficiently separate the signal at the single photon level from optical noise. Multipass setups around the memory and the filter crystal improve the storage efficiency and filter selectivity. Already without decoherence control, the setup permits storage of single photons in the microsecond regime at a storage efficiency of 42%. With decoherence control we demonstrate storage of weak coherent pulses containing some 10 photons for up to 10 s at a storage efficiency of several percent. The experimental data clearly demonstrate the applicability of EIT light storage to implement a true quantum memory in Pr3+:Y2SiO5 at long storage times. The scientific findings and technical developments are of relevance also to other protocols and media for quantum information storage.
