Phase transitions in the one-dimensional modified Penson-Kolb model with density-dependent hopping

Abstract

By relaxing the conventional assumption of the equal one-electron hopping amplitude, we modify the one-dimensional half-filled Penson-Kolb (PK) model to obey the density-dependent hopping (DDH). For positive small modulation parameter [Formula: see text] and pair hopping [Formula: see text], we use bosonization and renormalization-group analysis to determine the ground state phase diagram. In the attractive case([Formula: see text]), the existence of the DDH leads to a gap transition in the spin sector and produces a fully gapless phase where a Luttinger liquid metal phase with dominant triplet superconducting correlations is realized for [Formula: see text], with the charge transition point [Formula: see text] and the spin transition point [Formula: see text]. Besides, there is a Luther-Emery matal phase with dominant singlet-superconducting correlations for [Formula: see text] and a Haldane insulator phase characterized by dominant bond-spin-density-wave correlations for [Formula: see text] in the repulsive regime ([Formula: see text]).

Ground-state properties of the one-dimensional modified Penson–Kolb–Hubbard model

Yan Xu, Hanqin Ding

The ground-state properties of a 1D modified Penson–Kolb–Hubbard model characterized by alternating Hubbard interaction at odd and even sites are discussed by the bosonization scheme and the renormalization group analysis. At quarter filling, the quantum phase diagram consists of the charge-density-wave, spin-density-wave and singlet-superconductivity instabilities. The insulating phases come from the relevant umklapp process induced by the unequal on-site repulsion. The results provide a further understanding of occurrence of the umklapp process in 1D correlated electron systems.

Finite-size effects in Luther-Emery phases of Holstein and Hubbard models

Jonas Greitemann, Stephan Heßelmann, Stefan Weßel +2 more

The one-dimensional Holstein model and its generalizations have been studied extensively to understand the effects of electron-phonon interaction. The half-filled case is of particular interest, as it describes a transition from a metallic phase with a spin gap due to attractive backscattering to a Peierls insulator with charge-density-wave order. Our quantum Monte Carlo results support the existence of a metallic phase with dominant power-law charge correlations, as described by the Luther-Emery fixed point. We demonstrate that for Holstein and also for purely fermionic models the spin gap significantly complicates finite-size numerical studies, and explains inconsistent previous results for Luttinger parameters and phase boundaries. On the other hand, no such complications arise in spinless models. The correct low-energy theory of the spinful Holstein model is argued to be that of singlet bipolarons with a repulsive, mutual interaction. This picture naturally explains the existence of a metallic phase, but also implies that gapless Luttinger liquid theory is not applicable.

Quantum Phase Transition in a 1D Transport Model with Boson-Affected Hopping: Luttinger Liquid versus Charge-Density-Wave Behavior

Satoshi Ejima, Georg Hager, Holger Fehske

We solve a very general two-channel fermion-boson model describing charge transport within some background medium by means of a refined pseudosite density-matrix renormalization group technique. Performing a careful finite-size scaling analysis, we determine the ground-state phase diagram and convincingly prove that the model exhibits a metal-insulator quantum phase transition for the half-filled band case. In order to characterize the metallic and insulating regimes we calculate, besides the local particle densities and fermion-boson correlation functions, the kinetic energy, the charge-structure factor, the Luttinger liquid charge exponent, and the single-particle excitation gap for a one-dimensional infinite system.

Phase diagram of a generalized Penson–Kolb–Hubbard chain with the occupation-dependent hopping

Jing Xia Yu, Hanqin Ding

At half filling, we study analytically a one-dimensional correlated electronic system modeled by an extended Penson–Kolb–Hubbard (PKH) chain with the occupation-dependent hopping. The modification of the electron hopping amplitude is exhibited to induce the additional correlated-hopping interactions. At weak coupling, we use the field theory to obtain ground-state phase diagram, including the SDW, BCDW, BSDW, SS and TS phases for U>0. The induced three-body attractive interaction accounts for the superconductivity absent in the usual PKH model.

Phase diagram of the Hubbard chain with symmetric density-dependent hopping

Xin Sun, Weiting Chen, Hanqin Ding

By the bosonization and renormalization-group schemes, a half-filled Hubbard chain with density-dependent hopping is investigated at weak coupling. The model involved has an electron–hole symmetry and an SO(4) symmetry. The phase diagram consists of three different phases divided by a charge transition at on-site repulsion U = U c and a spin transition at U = U s , with U s = − U c = 16 π ( t c − 1 ) , including a Mott insulator with the SDW correlation, a dimerized insulator with the BCDW correlation, and a Luttinger metal with the coexisting TS and BSDW correlations. The effective three-body repulsion ( t c − 1 > 0 ) and attraction ( t c − 1 < 0 ) induce the dimerized and metallic phases, respectively. • We study a 1D Hubbard model with symmetric density-dependent hopping analytically. • We provide a theoretical scheme of realization of the BCDW and TS instabilities. • The results supplement further understanding of quantum properties of 1D correlated systems.

PHASE DIAGRAM OF THE ONE-DIMENSIONAL t–U–J MODEL WITH ON-BOND REPULSION AT HALF FILLING

Hanqin Ding, Yanshen Wang

By using the bosonization approach and the renormalization group (RG) technique, we study the half-filled band one-dimensional t–U–J model with additional on-bond repulsion (W>0) in the weak-coupling regime. The presence of on-bond repulsion is responsible for realization of a metallic phase in the system, and the phase diagram is strongly controlled by the symmetry of the model. By analyzing the RG flow diagram and comparing order parameters, the phase boundaries are determined and the structure of the phase diagram is clarified. In the case of SU (2) ⊗ SU (2) symmetry, the phase diagram consists of a metallic phase characterized by a Luttinger liquid (LL) and two insulting phases characterized by the degenerate spin-density-wave (SDW) and the bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW). In the SU (2) ⊗ U(1)-symmetric case, the phase diagram contains two metallic phases: a LL and a Luther–Emery phase, and three insulating phases: the transverse SDW ( SDW ±), the longitudinal SDW ( SDW z) and the dimerized BCDW. The insulating charge-density-wave and bond-spin-density-wave (BSDW) phases are always suppressed in the ground state. In addition, the system show a long-ranged order in the BCDW and SDW z phases.
