PAIRING, CONDENSATION, AND SUPERCONDUCTIVITY DESCRIBED BY A HUBBARD-MODEL WITH AN ATTRACTIVE INTERACTION

Abstract

We have developed a method for studying superconductivity in the negative-U Hubbard model. It is based on the Hubbard-alloy-analogy approximation applied to the Gor'kov equation for the model. We find that, unlike the case of the BCS solution, the formation of pairs and their condensation into a super-conducting ground state take place at two different temperatures. We calculate the condensation temperature T(c) for all U and discuss the nature of the normal state which, for large enough U, features a macroscopically large number of pairs. Briefly, we argue that the model has relevance for high-temperature superconductors.

Pairing of bosons in the condensed state of the boson-fermion model

A. S. Alexandrov

A two component model of negative U centers coupled with the Fermi sea of itinerant fermions is discussed in connection with high-temperature superconductivity of cuprates, and superfluidity of atomic fermions. We examine the phase transition and the condensed state of this boson-fermion model (BFM) beyond the ordinary mean-field approximation in two and three dimensions. No pairing of fermions and no condensation are found in two-dimensions for any symmetry of the order parameter. The expansion in the strength of the order parameter near the transition yields no linear homogeneous term in the Ginzburg-Landau-Gor'kov equation and a zero upper critical field in any-dimensional BFM, which indicates that previous mean-field discussions of the model are flawed. Normal and anomalous Green's functions are obtained diagrammatically and analytically in the condensed state of a simplest version of 3D BFM. A pairing of bosons analogous to the Cooper pairing of fermions is found. There are three coupled condensates in the model, described by the off-diagonal single-particle boson, pair-fermion and pair-boson fields. These results negate the common wisdom that the boson-fermion model is adequately described by the BCS theory at weak coupling.

Slave-boson mean-field theory for the negative-UHubbard model

Jorge O. Sofo, C. A. Balseiro

We study the negative-U Hubbard model for arbitrary values of the attractive interaction U and band filling by means of the slave-boson mean-field theory. We analyze both the normal and the superconducting states. We show that for the superconducting state our approach gives results similar to those obtained in the usual BCS mean field; only small renormalization of the bare parameters are obtained for U of the order of the bandwidth W. The energy difference between the normal and the superconducting states is maximum for U\ensuremath{\simeq}W. This energy difference is a measure of the superconducting critical temperature, which increases exponentially for small U and decreases as 1/U for large U. We discuss briefly the pair-breaking excitations.

From BCS-like superconductivity to condensation of local pairs: A numerical study of the attractive Hubbard model

Johannes Maria Singer, M. H. Pedersen, T. Schneider +2 more

We investigate the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model with quantum Monte Carlo techniques to reveal the crossover from a BCS-type superconductivity in the weak-coupling regime to a superconductivity properly described by a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of local, preformed pairs. The crossover from BCS to BEC is particularly well exposed in the temperature dependence of both the spin susceptibility and the double occupancy, as well as by the appearance of a pseudogap in the density of states far above ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$. These features are also mirrored in the shape of the specific-heat peak around ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$, the separation of the temperature regimes where pair formation and their condensation occur, and in the transfer of spectral weight from the single-particle excitation branch to a pair band in the normal state. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

η pairing and superconductivity in the negative-UHubbard model

Hiroshi Betsuyaku

It is proved explicitly that the strong on-site attractive interaction acts to form \ensuremath{\eta} pairings which make full use of the phase coherence of Bloch electrons. The U(1) gauge symmetry breaks spontaneously in the formation, which is accompanied by the creation of \ensuremath{\eta}-paired boson, ``\ensuremath{\eta} pairon.'' The condensation of \ensuremath{\eta} pairons takes place at a finite temperature to make up the ground-state condensate which has off-diagonal long-range order. The resulting ground state is a singlet and the energy spectrum has a gap. This type of superconductivity based on \ensuremath{\eta} pairing exhibits the same peculiar properties as observed in high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ oxide superconductors.

Superconducting phase coherence and pairing gap in the three-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

T. K. Kopeć

We consider a lattice version of the ``negative-$U''$ Hubbard model in three dimensions, to study the crossover from a superconducting phase transition (dominated by phase fluctuation) to a regime where the amplitude of the superconducting order parameter controls the critical temperature. Starting from a fermionic Hamiltonian, we give a microscopic derivation of the effective action in terms of the relevant physical fields: the modulus and phase of the superconducting order parameter. Furthermore, by employing to the resulting coarse--grained quantum $\mathrm{XY}$ model the phase fluctuation algebra between number and phase operators (given by the Euclidean group ${E}_{2}),$ we map the ``phase-only'' action onto a solvable quantum spherical model. We establish the self--consistent theory (involving both fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom), and calculate the superconducting phase coherence transition temperature ${T}_{c}$ as a function of the coupling strength $|U|,$ exhibiting a maximum where the behavior crosses over from BCS to Bose-Einstein (BE) condensation. We examine a pseudogap in the normal state which emerges naturally as a precursor of superconductivity at the second characteristic temperature ${T}_{g}$ due to a state with bound pairs but without long--range phase coherence. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the reduced gaps of the model $2{\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{0}{/k}_{B}{T}_{g}\ensuremath{\sim}4$ is almost independent on the pairing strength $|U|/t,$ whereas $2{\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{0}{/k}_{B}{T}_{c}$ increases with increasing $|U|$---in striking analogy with the phenomenology of the high--temperature cuprate superconductors when interpreted in terms of the BCS-BC crossover scenario.
