Abstract

The excitation spectrum of pair fluctuations in the ground state of a dilute two-dimensional (2D) attractive Fermi-gas is studied for different coupling regimes. In the strong-coupling limit the spectrum has the Bogolubov form, but in the weak-coupling regime there are two types of the pair excitations (different from two-fermion scattering states): (i) long-wavelength collective mode with the cutoff at momentum q(c) similar to 1/xi(0), where xi(0) is the pair size, and (ii) pair excitations with q greater than or equal to root 8m mu.

Collective excitations in the ground state of a two-dimensional attractive Fermi gas

Sergei V. Traven

The spectrum of collective (pair) excitations in the ground state of a dilute twodimensional (2D) attractive Fermi-gas is studied within the functional integral formalism. The linearized equations for the fluctuations about the non-trivial saddle point are analyzed for all coupling regimes, which are characterized by the ratio ε 0 /ε F , where ε 0 is the two-fermion binding energy and ε F is the Fermi energy. The approximation takes into account propagation of the fluctuations and their interaction with the condensate. In the strong-coupling, or ‘;Bosegas’, regime (ε 0 /ε F > 1) the spectrum is continuous and has the Bogolubov form, but in the weak-coupling limit (ε 0 /ε F «1) there are two types of excitations (different from the two-fermion scattering states): (i) long-wavelength sound-like excitations with the cut-off at momentum q c ≃ l/ξ 0 (where ξ 0 is the Cooper pair size), and (ii) pair excitations with q ≃ (8 m μ) ½ , where μ is the chemical potential and m is the fermion mass. The crossover between weakand strong-coupling behavior of the excitation spectrum is found to occur at the value of the coupling parameter ε 0 /ε F ≃¼. Introduction Since the discovery of high- T c superconductivity there has been growing interest in studying 2D Fermi gases with attractive interaction, especially in the crossover regime, when the pair size ξ 0 is of the order of the interparticle distance. The importance of such a model, which can be regarded as a semiphenomenological model of a 2D superconductor, is highlighted by experimental evidence that the high- T c superconductors, most of which have a layered structure, have a short coherence length, so that k F ξ 0 ≃1, where k F is the Fermi momentum.

Pair excitations in the ground state of a two-dimensional attractive Fermi gas

Sergei V. Traven

Crossover of the pair excitation spectrum in the ground state of a dilute two-dimensional Fermi gas is studied as a function of the attraction strength $\frac{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{0}}{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{F}}$, where ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{0}$ is the two-fermion binding energy and ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{F}$ is the Fermi energy. It is shown that at $\frac{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{0}}{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{F}}\ensuremath{\simeq}\frac{1}{4}$ the spectrum changes its character from the continuous one in the strong-coupling, or "Bose-gas," limit ($\frac{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{0}}{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{F}}\ensuremath{\gg}1$) to that which consists of two different types of excitations in the weak-coupling ($\frac{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{0}}{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{F}}\ensuremath{\ll}1$) regime: (i) long-wavelength soundlike mode with the cutoff at momentum ${q}_{c}\ensuremath{\sim}\frac{1}{{\ensuremath{\xi}}_{0}}$, and (ii) pair excitations with $q\ensuremath{\ge}\sqrt{8m\ensuremath{\mu}}$.

Spectrum of density, spin, and pairing fluctuations of an attractive two-dimensional Fermi gas

Christian Apostoli, Patrick Kelly, Annette Lopez +4 more

We leverage random phase approximation and unbiased auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo methods to compute dynamical correlations for a dilute homogeneous two-dimensional attractive Fermi gas. Our main purpose is to quantitatively study the collective excitations of the system to generate robust benchmark results and to shed light into fermionic superfluidity in the strongly correlated regime. In particular we are motivated by a recent paper suggesting that the Higgs mode can be detected in the spectrum of spin fluctuations. Despite the fact that we are somewhat limited by finite-size effects, our study indeed pinpoints a clear peak in the spin channel at low momentum, but a detailed analysis suggests that such a peak, though certainly interesting, does not correspond to the Higgs mode. We propose a different explanation for the shape of the spin structure factor. However, our results clearly show that the Higgs mode can be detected in the density channel at very small wave vectors, although very good resolution is necessary.

Superfluidity of a Two-Dimensional Dilute Attractive Fermi Gas

Sergei V. Traven

It is demonstrated that the interaction between fluctuations of the pairing field in a two-dimensional (2D) dilute attractive Fermi gas stabilizes the low-temperature phase of the system. This result, which is valid for all values of the "coupling parameter" $\frac{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{0}}{{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{F}}$ (where ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{0}$ is the two-fermion binding energy and ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{F}$ is the Fermi energy), then allows one to conclude that a 2D dilute attractive Fermi gas is superfluid at small but finite temperature.

Collective modes of the one-dimensional Fermi gas within the quasiparticle random-phase approximation

T. Alm, Peter Schuck

The one-dimensional Fermi gas with attractive \ensuremath{\delta} interaction is treated in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation at zero temperature. The collective modes are evaluated numerically in the high-density (weak-coupling) and in the low-density (strong-coupling) case. Whereas in the weak-coupling limit the ordinary (particle-hole) random-phase approximation is approached for low momenta, the collective mode in the strong-coupling limit reproduces the Bogoliubov mode for the weakly interacting gas of particle-particle pairs (bosons). We find a smooth evolution of the collective modes from weak to strong coupling. Analytical approximations for the dispersion relation in the long-wavelength limit are derived for both weak and strong coupling. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Quantum Monte Carlo studies of superfluid Fermi gases

Siyuan Chang, Vijay R. Pandharipande, Joseph Carlson +1 more

We report results of quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the ground state of dilute Fermi gases with attractive short-range two-body interactions. The strength of the interaction is varied to study different pairing regimes which are characterized by the product of the $s$-wave scattering length and the Fermi wave vector, $a{k}_{F}$. We report results for the ground-state energy, the pairing gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}$, and the quasiparticle spectrum. In the weak-coupling regime, $1∕a{k}_{F}<\ensuremath{-}1$, we obtain Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid and the energy gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ is much smaller than the Fermi gas energy ${E}_{\mathrm{FG}}$. When $a>0$, the interaction is strong enough to form bound molecules with energy ${E}_{\mathrm{mol}}$. For $1∕a{k}_{F}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.5$, we find that weakly interacting composite bosons are formed in the superfluid gas with $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ and gas energy per particle approaching $\ensuremath{\mid}{E}_{\mathrm{mol}}\ensuremath{\mid}∕2$. In this region, we seem to have Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of molecules. The behavior of the energy and the gap in the BCS-to-BEC transition region, $\ensuremath{-}0.5<1∕a{k}_{F}<0.5$, is discussed.
