The Birth of Time before the Big Bang: Inert State, First Density Shift, and First Cause–Effect Relations.

Abstract

A hypothesis is proposed concerning the birth of time before the Big Bang. Time is not a fundamental coordinate but a state that emerges with the first density shift of gravitational energy and the appearance of the first cause–effect relation. Prior to that moment, reality is in an inert state in which no state differentiation exists and the concepts “before” and “after” are undefined. It is shown that the question “what was there before the Big Bang” has a well-posed answer: before the Big Bang there existed a sequence of events ordered not by time but by an evolution parameter τ. A calibration test of the operationalization of the event density (Appendix A) shows that an event cannot be reduced to a local physical channel: under such an interpretation, the rate of time would vary between media by 10–35 orders of magnitude, which is not observed. The observational argument is strengthened by an analysis of clock corrections (GPS, optical standards): all applied corrections are described by the gravitational potential and contain no term dependent on the density of local events. This refines the notion of event in the hypothesis: an event is neither a transition nor a collision but a correlation between subsystems. A sketch of a decoherence mechanism explaining the transition from quantum correlations to classical spacetime is proposed.

Quantum Rules and the Emergence of Macroscopic Spacetime: A Perspective on the Universe's Origin

Li Peng

Modern physics faces a constellation of foundational puzzles: the Big Bang singularity, time's arrow, dark matter and dark energy, the cosmological constant problem, fine-tuning, quantum measurement, and quantum gravity unification. This Perspective proposes a unified resolution grounded in complexity-driven selection from diverse quantum paths. Prior to the Big Bang, reality comprises a pre-temporal quantum substrate (lacking classical time coordinate but governed by unitary quantum evolution), evolving reversibly across multiple trajectories—including opposing time arrows. The Big Bang marks an emergence threshold (λ) where decoherence locks spacetime parameters, yielding our classical universe as a "survivor" of local emergence rather than a closed totality. Dark matter and dark energy represent unevolved quantum paths—residuals exerting gravitational influence without full manifestation. This framework reframes cosmology as the study of layered emergence, dissolving "why" questions into "when/how" selection dynamics, with testable predictions in CMB perturbations, quantum decoherence experiments, and gravitational wave observations. By shifting from reductionism to emergentism, it suggests a universal pattern: threshold-gated emergence from diverse substrates, applicable from the cosmos to consciousness.

The 0 → 1 Hypothesis: Physical Events, Information, and the Emergence of Time

Reino Rehn

Abstract, This paper introduces the 0 → 1 hypothesis, a conceptual framework in which physical events and their relational ordering are treated as potentially more fundamental than macroscopic time. Rather than assuming time to be a universally flowing background parameter, the framework begins with distinguishable physical states, transitions between states, and causal or relational ordering among events. The notation 0 → 1 is used as a conceptual shorthand for physical becoming; it does not imply binary computation, creation from nothing, wave-function collapse, or a universal Planck-time clock. The central question is whether familiar temporal quantities can emerge from a more fundamental relational structure while remaining compatible with relativistic causal structure, quantum theory, and the thermodynamic arrow of time. A minimal mathematical scaffold is proposed in terms of an event set, a causal partial order, state transitions, and a coarse-grained duration functional. The framework is compared with relational time, the Page–Wootters mechanism, and causal-set approaches. At its present stage, the 0 → 1 hypothesis is a conceptual research framework rather than a complete physical theory. The paper therefore identifies the mathematical and empirical requirements that would be necessary for the hypothesis to become falsifiable and experimentally distinguishable from existing approaches.

Emergence of Classical Time: Gravitational Temporal Decoherence and the Uniqueness of the Past

sergio leonardo Pradal

We propose a conservative theoretical framework addressing the emergence of classical time and the uniqueness of the past within quantum mechanics, without modifying its fundamental postulates or introducing objective collapse mechanisms. The central observation is that quantum superpositions of mass–energy distributions necessarily imply superpositions of gravitational potentials, and therefore superpositions of proper times. By treating time as an effective quantum degree of freedom and extending the system Hilbert space accordingly, we show that matter–time entanglement leads to an intrinsic dispersion of proper time. Gravitational fluctuations and irreversible memory formation dynamically suppress this dispersion, giving rise to an effective closure of temporal histories. The resulting dynamics admits stable fixed points corresponding to classical time and a unique past, while remaining fully compatible with global unitarity. We analyze the stability of this closure, its relation to decoherence and quantum Darwinism, and its implications for cosmology, including the interpretation of the Big Bang as a temporal closure process rather than a fundamental beginning of time. The framework clarifies the role of gravity in the quantum–classical transition and delineates the physical conditions under which a unique history can emerge.

On Quantum Gravity If Non-Locality Is Fundamental

Stuart Alan Kauffman

I take non-locality to be the Michaelson Morley experiment of the early 21st Century, assume its universal validity, and try to derive its consequences. Spacetime, with its locality, cannot be fundamental, but must somehow be emergent from entangled coherent quantum variables and their behaviors. There are, then, two immediate consequences: i. If we start with non-locality, we need not explain non-locality. We must instead explain an emergence of locality and spacetime. ii. There can be no emergence of spacetime without matter. These propositions flatly contradict General Relativity, which is foundationally local, can be formulated without matter, and in which there is no “emergence” of spacetime. If these be true, then quantum gravity cannot be a minor alteration of General Relativity but must demand its deep reformulation. This will almost inevitably lead to: Matter not only curves spacetime, but “creates” spacetime. We will see independent grounds for the assertion that matter both curves and creates spacetime that may invite a new union of quantum gravity and General Relativity. This quantum creation of spacetime consists in: i. Fully non-local entangled coherent quantum variables.ii. The onset of locality via decoherence. iii. A metric in Hilbert Space among entangled quantum variables by the sub-additive von Neumann Entropy between pairs of variables. iv. Mapping from metric distances in Hilbert Space to metric distances in classical spacetime by episodic actualization events.v. Discrete spacetime is the relations among these discrete actualization events. vi. “Now” is the shared moment of actualization of one among the entangled variables when the amplitudes of the remaining entangled variables change instantaneously.vii. The discrete, successive, episodic, irreversible actualization events constitute a quantum arrow of time. viii. The arrow of time history of these events is recorded in the very structure of the spacetime constructed. ix. Actual Time is a succession of two or more actual events. The theory inevitably yields a UV cut-off of a new type. The cut-off is a phase transition between continuous spacetime before the transition and discontinuous spacetime beyond the phase transition. This quantum creation of spacetime modifies general relativity and may account for Dark Energy, Dark Matter, and the possible elimination of the singularities of General Relativity.Relations to Causal Set Theory, faithful Lorentzian manifolds, and past and future light cones joined at “Actual Now” are discussed.Possible observational and experimental tests based on: i. the existence of Sub- Planckian photons, ii. knee and ankle discontinuities in the high energy gamma ray spectrum, and iii. possible experiments to detect a creation of spacetime in the Casimir system are discussed. A quantum actualization enhancement of repulsive Casimir effect would be anti-gravitational and of possible practical use.The ideas and concepts discussed here are not yet a theory, but at most the start of a framework that may be useful.

Quantum formalism for events and how time can emerge from its foundations

Eduardo O. Dias

Although time is one of our most intuitive physical concepts, its understanding at the fundamental level is still an open question in physics. For instance, time in quantum mechanics and general relativity are two distinct and incompatible entities. While relativity deals with events (points in spacetime), with time being observer dependent and dynamical, quantum mechanics describes physical systems by treating time as an independent parameter. To resolve this conflict, in this work, we extend the classical concept of an event to the quantum domain by defining an event as a transfer of information between physical systems. Then, by describing the universe from the perspective of a certain observer, we introduce quantum states of events with space-time-symmetric wave functions that predict the joint probability distribution of a measurement (observation) at $(t,\stackrel{P\vec}{x})$. Under these circumstances, without assuming collapse, we propose that a well-defined instant of time, like any other observable, arises from a single event, thus being an observer-dependent property. In this manner, we obtain a stationary quantum state written as a sum of a sequence of normalized states of events with increasing memories. As a consequence, a counterfactual asymmetry along this sequence of events gives rise to the flow of time as being successive ``snapshots'' from the observer's perspective. In this proposal, which contrasts strikingly to the view in which time is an illusion, it is the many distinguishable states in which the observer stores information that makes the existence of time possible.
