Deterministic Preparation of Optical Squeezed Cat and Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill States

Matthew S. Winnel, Joshua J. Guanzon, Deepesh Singh +1 more

Large-amplitude squeezed cat states and high-quality Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) states are essential for effective quantum error correction, yet their optical preparation has been hindered by challenges such as low success probabilities, small amplitudes, and insufficient squeezing. Addressing these limitations, our research introduces scalable optical schemes for the deterministic preparation of large-amplitude squeezed cat states from photon-number states. Fock states have the benefit of producing consistent cat states across all measurement outcomes and intrinsically provides a degree of squeezing. Notably, these squeezed cat states facilitate the deterministic generation of high-quality approximate GKP states via "breeding," showing that GKP error correction in optics is technically feasible in near-term experiments. Our schemes allow fault-tolerant quantum computation through the use of GKP error correction.

Linear-optical generation of hybrid GKP entanglement from small-amplitude cat states

Shohei Kiryu, Yohji Chin, Masahiro Takeoka +1 more

Hybrid bosonic codes combining bosonic codes with photon states offer a promising pathway for fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, the efficient generation of such states in optical setups remains technically challenging due to the requirement for complex non-Gaussian resources. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to efficiently generate hybrid entangled states between a GKP qubit and a photon-number state using small-amplitude cat states as the primary resource. We apply a breeding process using small-amplitude cat states to increase the non-Gaussianity of the input states. This method requires only linear optical elements and homodyne measurements. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this protocol can be extended to generate hybrid qudit states. This scheme has the potential to provide a resource-efficient and experimentally attractive route toward implementing hybrid quantum error correction.

Exact simulation of realistic Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill cluster states

Milica Banić, Valerio Crescimanna, J. Eli Bourassa +3 more

We describe a method for simulating and characterizing realistic Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) cluster states, rooted in the representation of resource states in terms of sums of Gaussian distributions in phase space. We apply our method to study the generation of single-mode GKP states via cat state breeding, and the formation of multimode GKP cluster states via linear optical circuits and homodyne measurements. We characterize resource states by referring to expectation values of their stabilizers and witness operators constructed from them. Our method reproduces the results of standard Fock-basis simulations, while being more efficient and being applicable in a broader parameter space. We also comment on the validity of the heuristic Gaussian random noise model, through comparisons with our exact simulations: We find discrepancies in the stabilizer expectation values when homodyne measurement is involved in cluster state preparation, yet we find close agreement between the two approaches on average.
