Abstract

In the formalism of the grand canonical ensemble, we study a model system of a lattice Bose gas with repulsive hard-core interaction on a perfect graph. We show that the corresponding ideal system may undergo a phase transition (Bose-Einstein condensation). For a system of interacting particles, we obtain an explicit expression for pressure in the thermodynamic limit. The analysis of this expression demonstrates that the phase transition does not take place in the indicated system.

Bose–Einstein Condensation as a Deposition Phase Transition of Quantum Hard Spheres and New Relations between Bosonic and Fermionic Pressures

К.А. Bugaev, O. Ivanytskyi, B.E. Grinyuk +1 more

We investigate the phase transition of Bose–Einstein particles with the hard-core repulsion in the grand canonical ensemble within the Van der Waals approximation. It is shown that the pressure of non-relativistic Bose–Einstein particles is mathematically equivalent to the pressure of simplified version of the statistical multifragmentation model of nuclei with the vanishing surface tension coefficient and the Fisher exponent тF = 5/2 , which for such parameters has the 1-st order phase transition. The found similarity of these equations of state allows us to show that within the present approach the high density phase of Bose-Einstein particles is a classical macro-cluster with vanishing entropy at any temperature which, similarly to the system of classical hard spheres, is a kind of solid state. To show this we establish new relations which allow us to identically represent the pressure of Fermi–Dirac particles in terms of pressures of Bose–Einstein particles of two sorts.

Phase transitions in Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model in the heavy fermion limit: Hard-core boson approach

Stasyuk, Володимир Олександрович Краснов

Phase transitions are investigated in the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model in the mean field and hard-core boson approximations for the case of infinitely small fermion transfer and repulsive on-site boson-fermion interaction. The behavior of the Bose-Einstein condensate order parameter and grand canonical potential is analyzed as functions of the chemical potential of bosons at zero temperature. The possibility of change of order of the phase transition to the superfluid phase in the regime of fixed values of the chemical potentials of Bose-and Fermi-particles is established. The relevant phase diagrams are built.

Bose–Einstein condensation in mesoscopic systems: The self-similar structure of the critical region and the nonequivalence of the canonical and grand canonical ensembles

Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Sergey V. Tarasov

The analytical theory of Bose–Einstein condensation of an ideal gas in mesoscopic systems has been briefly reviewed in application to traps with arbitrary shapes and dimension. This theory describes the phases of the classical gas and the formed Bose–Einstein condensate, as well as the entire vicinity of the phase transition point. The statistics and thermodynamics of Bose–Einstein condensation have been studied in detail, including their self-similar structure in the critical region, transition to the thermodynamic limit, effect of boundary conditions on the properties of a system, and nonequivalence of the description of Bose–Einstein condensation in different statistical ensembles. The complete classification of universality classes of Bose–Einstein condensation has been given.

Superstabilization of Bose systems: I. Thermodynamic study

J.-B. Bru

In this paper, we present a general method of superstabilization corresponding to add the 'forward scattering' interaction to some non-superstable model. Then, we evaluate the free-energy density, the grand-canonical pressure and particle density for the new (superstable) Bose gas using those for the (non-superstable) model. To sum up, this first part should give us the thermodynamic basis necessary to explain, in a subsequent paper, the main interest of this method: the restoration of the strong equivalence of ensembles (canonical/grand-canonical) without destroying the 'fundamental' thermodynamic properties (such as Bose condensation phenomenona) issued from the first non-superstable system.

The Ideal Bose Gas

Лев П. Питаевский, S. Stringari

Abstract This chapter describes the mechanism of Bose–Einstein condensation in the simplest ideal Bose gas case. An explicit expression for the critical temperature is derived in the analytically soluble case of a gas confined in a box. Various thermodynamic quantities are calculated above and below the critical temperature. Emphasis is given to the isothermal compressibility which diverges below the critical temperature. The behaviour of the off-diagonal one-body density matrix is discussed. Results for the fluctuations of the single-particle occupation numbers are derived in both the canonical and grand canonical ensembles.

On the Features of Ideal Bose-Gas Thermodynamic Prop-erties at a Finite Particle Number

A. I. Bugrij, В. М. Локтев

The paper is devoted to the theory of an ideal Bose-gas with a finite number N of particles. The exact expressions for the partition functions and occupation numbers of the model in the grand canonical, canonical, and microcanonical ensembles are found. From the calculations, it is followed that, oppositely to the accepted opinion that the chemical potential μ of an ideal Bose-gas is only negative, it can take values in the range −∞ < μ < ∞. The asymptotic expressions (in the case N ≫ 1) for the partition functions and occupation numbers for all above-mentioned thermodynamic ensembles are also evaluated.
