Mixed columnar-plaquette phase of hard-core bosons and its quantum melting

Stefan Weßel

We examine the ground-state phase diagram of repulsively interacting hard-core bosons on the quarter-filled checkerboard lattice using quantum Monte Carlo simulations constrained to the canonical ensemble. At a sufficiently large repulsion, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a superfluid into a valence-bond-solid regime. We identify this as a weakly first-order quantum melting transition at quarter filling. Furthermore, by examining appropriate order parameters, we exhibit the mixed nature of the valence bond solid, with both columnar and plaquette long-ranged order. Our results demonstrate the realization of the mixed columnar-plaquette phase found recently for the square lattice quantum dimer model in a microscopic bosonic system.

Quantum scaling of the spin lattice relaxation rate in the checkerboard J-Q model

Chengchen Li, Huihang Lin, Rong Yu

Abstract Motivated by recent progress on the experimental realization of proximate deconfined quantum critical point in a frustrated quantum magnet, we study the low-energy spin dynamics of a related checkerboard J-Q model by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The ground state of this model undergoes a weakly first-order quantum phase transition with an emergent O(4) symmetry between an antiferromagnetic state and a plaquette valence bond solid. The calculated spin lattice relaxation rate of nuclear magnetic resonance, 1 / T 1 , exhibits distinct low-temperature behaviors depending on the ground states. With decreasing the temperature, 1 / T 1 rises up on the antiferromagnetic side, characterizing a crossover to the renormalized classical regime, whereas 1 / T 1 drops exponentially on the side of valence bond solid, reflecting the gap opening in the plaquette ordered phase. The extracted spin gap scales with the distance to the transition point as a power-law with an exponent φ ≈ 0.3, consistent with the scaling ansatz ϕ = ν z with ν ≈ 0.3 and z = 1. Near the quantum phase transition, the temperature dependent 1 / T 1 shows a broad crossover regime where a universal scaling 1 / T 1 ∼ T η with η ≈ 0.6 is found. Our results suggest a quantum scaling regime associated with the emergent enhanced symmetry near this first-order quantum phase transition.

Weakly first-order quantum phase transition between spin-nematic and valence-bond crystal order in a square-lattice SU(4) fermionic model

Pranay Patil, Fabien Alet, Sylvain Capponi +1 more

We consider a model Hamiltonian with two $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ fermions per site on a square lattice, showing a competition between bilinear and biquadratic interactions. This model has generated interest due to possible realizations in ultra-cold-atom experiments and existence of spin-liquid ground states. Using a basis transformation, we show that part of the phase diagram is amenable to quantum Monte Carlo simulations without a sign problem. We find evidence for spin nematic and valence-bond crystalline phases, which are separated by a weak first-order phase transition. A $\mathrm{U}(1$) symmetry is found to emerge in the valence-bond crystal histograms, suggesting proximity to a deconfined quantum critical point. Our results are obtained with the help of a loop algorithm which allows large-scale simulations of bilinear-biquadratic $\mathrm{SO}(N$) models on arbitrary lattices in a certain parameter regime.
