Abstract

This work is devoted to simulation of precise experiment of loss coefficient measurement experiment at different velocities of UCN using gravitational spectroscopy and to choose optimal parameters of storage volume. The effect of various covers and materials of trap on loss coefficients preliminary was estimated. As result of simulation the size of experimentalset-up, optimal time diagram of measurements and optimal area of sample to measure loss coefficient with given accuracy were chosen. Keywords: loss coefficient, ultracold neutrons

Observation of the Spatial Distribution of Gravitationally Bound Quantum States of Ultracold Neutrons and Its Derivation Using the Wigner Function

Go Ichikawa, S. Komamiya, Yoshio Kamiya +9 more

Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) can be bound by the potential of terrestrial gravity and a reflecting mirror. The wave function of the bound state has characteristic modulations. We carried out an experiment to observe the vertical distribution of the UCNs above such a mirror at the Institut Laue-Langevin in 2011. The observed modulation is in good agreement with that prediction by quantum mechanics using the Wigner function. The spatial resolution of the detector system is estimated to be 0.7 μm. This is the first observation of gravitationally bound states of UCNs with submicron spatial resolution.

Observation of the Gravitationally Bound Quantum States of Ultracold Neutrons with Submicron Spatial Resolution

Go Ichikawa, S. Komamiya, Yoshio Kamiya

(Received July 14, 2013)Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) have very low kinetic energy, therefore they can be bound by terrestrialgravity above a reflecting mirror. The wave function of the bound state has a characteristic modu-lation. We developed a novel technique of magnifying the UCN distribution using a cylindrical rodas a convex mirror to overcome the current neutron detector resolution of several microns. The ob-served modulation is in good agreement with the prediction. The detector resolution is estimatedto be 0:7 m. This is the first observation of gravitationally bound states of UCNs with submicronspatial resolution.

Ultracold neutron accumulation in a superfluid-helium converter with magnetic multipole reflector

O. Zimmer, Robert Golub

We analyze the accumulation of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in a superfluid-helium converter vessel surrounded by a magnetic multipole reflector. We solved the spin-dependent rate equation, employing formulas valid for adiabatic spin transport of trapped UCNs in mechanical equilibrium. Results for saturation UCN densities are obtained in dependence of order and strength of the multipolar field. The addition of magnetic storage to neutron optical potentials can increase the density and energy of the low-field-seeking UCNs produced and serves to mitigate the effects of wall losses on the source performance. It also can provide a highly polarized sample of UCNs without need to polarize the neutron beam incident on the converter. This work was performed in preparation of the UCN source project SuperSUN at the Institut Laue--Langevin.

First ever storage of ultracold neutrons in a magnetic trap made of permanent magnets

В. Ф. Ежов, A. Z. Andreev, A.A. Glushkov +13 more

Further improvement in the accuracy of any neutron lifetime experiment by means of ultracold neutrons (UCN) in material bottles is limited due to unavoidable systematic effects when the UCN are reflected from the walls. However, such effects can be excluded in principle if magnetic trapping of UCN is used. The storage of UCN in a small magnetic trap made of permanent magnets was demonstrated for the first time ever. The measured storage time in this feasibility study was (882 ± 16) s. At this level of accuracy no depolarization was observed.
