Abstract

We analyze the quantum phase transition for a set of N two-level systems interacting with a bosonic mode in the adiabatic regime. Through the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, we obtain the finite-size scaling expansion for many physical observables and, in particular, for the entanglement content of the system.

Finite-size behavior of quantum collective spin systems

Giuseppe Di Liberti, Franco Piperno, Francesco Plastina

We discuss the finite size behavior of the adiabatic Dicke model, describing the collective coupling of a set of $N$ two-level atoms (qubits) to a faster (electromagnetic) oscillator mode. The energy eigenstates of this system are shown to be directly related to those of another widely studied collective spin model, the uniaxial one. By employing an approximate continuum approach, we obtain a complete characterization of the properties of the latter, which we then use to evaluate the scaling properties of various observables for the original Dicke model near its quantum phase transition.

Quantum tunneling in the adiabatic Dicke model

Gang Chen, Zidong Chen, Jiuqing Liang

The Dicke model describes $N$ two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode bosonic field and exhibits a second-order phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phase. The energy levels are not degenerate in the normal phase but have degeneracy in the superradiant phase, where quantum tunneling occurs. By means of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the instanton method in quantum field theory, the tunneling splitting, inversely proportional to the tunneling rate for the adiabatic Dicke model, in the superradiant phase can be evaluated explicitly. It is shown that the tunneling splitting vanishes as $\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{-}N)$ for large $N$, whereas for small $N$ it disappears as $\sqrt{N}∕\mathrm{exp}(N)$. The dependence of the tunneling splitting on the relevant parameters, especially on the atom-field coupling strength, is also discussed.

Quantum phase transitions in coupled two-level atoms in a single-mode cavity

Qing‐Hu Chen, Tao Liu, Yuyu Zhang +1 more

The dipole-coupled two-level atoms (qubits) in a single-mode resonant cavity are studied by extended bosonic coherent states. The numerical solution is presented. The first-order quantum phase transitions may occur in finite systems, in contrast to the original Dicke model. This system also exhibits a second-order quantum phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phase, as in the original Dicke model. Finite-size scaling for several observables---such as average fidelity susceptibility, order parameter, and concurrence---is performed for different interatomic interactions. The scaling exponents obtained suggest that interatomic interactions do not change the universality class.

Scaling of Berry's phase close to the Dicke quantum phase transition

Francesco Plastina, G Liberti, Angelo C. M. Carollo

We discuss the thermodynamic and finite-size scaling properties of the geometric phase in the adiabatic Dicke model, describing a quantum phase transition for an N qubit register coupled to a slow oscillator mode. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit, a non-zero Berry phase is obtained only if a path in parameter space is followed that encircles the critical point. Furthermore, we investigate the precursors of this critical behavior for a system with finite size and obtain the leading orders in the 1/ N expansion of the Berry phase and its critical exponent.

Dicke model: Entanglement as a finite size effect

Oleksandr Tsyplyatyev, Daniel Loss

We analyze the Dicke model at zero temperature by matrix diagonalization to determine the entanglement in the ground state. In the infinite system limit the mean field approximation predicts a quantum phase transition from a non-interacting state to a Bose-Einstein condensate at a threshold coupling. We show that in a finite system the spin part of the ground state is a bipartite entangled state, which can be tested by probing two parts of the spin system separately, but only in a narrow regime around the threshold coupling. Around the resonance, the size of this regime is inversely proportional to the number of spins and shrinks down to zero for infinite systems. This spin entanglement is a non-perturbative effect and is also missed by the mean-field approximation.
