Suppression of decay via magnetic coherence in a V-type three level system

Abstract

We show that a V-type three-level system with additional coherence due to a static magnetic field coupling the two excited levels displays peculiar interference effects which can be controlled through the magnetic-field strength. In particular, emission suppression and trapping of the population in a nondecaying state can be obtained.

Effects of the Magnetic Field on Lasing Without Population Inversion in a V-type Atomic System

H. Lu

The interaction of a three-level V-type atom with an additional magnetic field is studied. With one coupling field and one probe field,it is found that, due to the effects of the added magnetic field, lasing without inversion(LWI) can be realized. Here, the magnetic field can induce the quantum coherence between the two upper levels. Also,it can influence the interference of the other transitions.

Analysis of dynamical suppression of spontaneous emission

P. R. Berman

It has been shown recently [see, for example, S.-Y. Zhu and M. O. Scully, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 388 (1996)] that a dynamical suppression of spontaneous emission can occur in a three-level system when an external field drives transitions between a metastable state and two decaying states. What is unusual in the decay scheme is that the decaying states are coupled directly by the vacuum radiation field. It is shown that the decay dynamics required for total suppression of spontaneous emission necessarily implies that the level scheme is isomorphic to a three-level \ensuremath{\Lambda} system, in which the lower two levels are both metastable and each is coupled to the decaying state. As such, the total suppression of spontaneous emission can be explained in terms of conventional dark states and coherent population trapping.

Influence of a magnetic field on coherent population trapping in atomic systems of degenerated levels

T. Ya. Karagodova

Coherent population trapping effect is widely studied for simple three-level systems of different types ((Xi) 2, (Lambda) , V)1,2. For real atoms the situation is more complicated. Atomic levels are degenerated one and in the presence of external fields coupling of magnetic sublevels appears due to radiation, so magnetic fields leading to the systems of levels of the higher order. Our theory and method of calculation for interaction of multilevel atoms, with intense radiation fields in the presence of external magnetic fields have been applied for considering coherent population trapping effect for such systems. In the absence of magnetic field for considering sets of parameters, we can see the behavior of populations in function of time, detunings for both systems of coupled sublevels inherent to the coherent population trapping effect. In the presence of magnetic field, we can see novel features in the populations for the systems of coupled magnetic sublevels.

Inducing quantum coherence via decays and incoherent pumping with application to population trapping, lasing without inversion, and quenching of spontaneous emission

Victor V. Kozlov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev, Marlan O. Scully

Quantum interference in a decaying three-level system of V type with degenerate upper levels driven by a single incoherent field is shown to lead to a coherent population-trapping state and more generally to a population-locked state. The latter is a state with half the population locked in two upper states regardless of the strength of incoherent pumping and decay rates. We reveal the mechanism by which half the population is pumped to the upper states no matter how weak is the incoherent pumping. Transient regimes of gain without inversion and inversion without gain are demonstrated. Quenching of spontaneous emission due to electron collisions is also discussed in support of the experiments and ideas of Suckewer and [Phys. Rev. Lett. 60, 1122 (1988)].
