Z/2Z topological order and Majorana doubling in Kitaev Chain

Rukhsan Ul Haq, Louis Hirsch Kauffman

The Kitaev chain model exhibits topological order that manifests as topological degeneracy, Majorana edge modes and $Z_{2}$ topological invariance of the abulk spectrum. This model can be obtained from a transverse field Ising model(TFIM) using the Jordan-Wigner transformation. TFIM has neither topological degeneracy nor any edge modes. Topological degeneracy associated with topological order is central to topological quantum computation. In this paper we will explore topological protection of the ground state manifold in the case of Majorana fermion models which exhibit $Z_{2}$ topological order. We will show that there are at least two different ways to understand this topological protection of Majorana fermion qubits: one way is based on fermionic mode operators and the other is based on anti-commuting symmetry operators. We will also show how these two different ways are related to each other. We provide a very general approach of understanding the topological protection of Majorana fermion qubits in the case of lattice Hamiltonians.

Theory of (2+1)-dimensional fermionic topological orders and fermionic/bosonic topological orders with symmetries

Tian Lan, Liang Kong, Xiao-Gang Wen

We propose a systematic framework to classify (2+1)-dimensional (2+1D) fermionic topological orders without symmetry and 2+1D fermionic/bosonic topological orders with symmetry $G$. The key is to use the so-called symmetric fusion category $\mathcal{E}$ to describe the symmetry. Here, $\mathcal{E}=\mathrm{sRep}({\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{f})$ describing particles in a fermionic product state without symmetry, or $\mathcal{E}=\mathrm{sRep}({G}^{f}) [\mathcal{E}=\mathrm{Rep}(G)]$ describing particles in a fermionic (bosonic) product state with symmetry $G$. Then, topological orders with symmetry $\mathcal{E}$ are classified by nondegenerate unitary braided fusion categories over $\mathcal{E}$, plus their modular extensions and total chiral central charges. This allows us to obtain a list that contains all 2+1D fermionic topological orders without symmetry. For example, we find that, up to $p+\phantom{\rule{1.0pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{i}\phantom{\rule{1.0pt}{0ex}}p$ fermionic topological orders, there are only four fermionic topological orders with one nontrivial topological excitation: (1) the $K=\left(\begin{array}{cc}\hfill \ensuremath{-}1& \hfill 0\\ \hfill 0& \hfill 2\end{array}\right)$ fractional quantum Hall state, (2) a Fibonacci bosonic topological order stacking with a fermionic product state, (3) the time-reversal conjugate of the previous one, and (4) a fermionic topological order with chiral central charge $c=\frac{1}{4}$, whose only topological excitation has non-Abelian statistics with spin $s=\frac{1}{4}$ and quantum dimension $d=1+\sqrt{2}$.

Detecting Majorana fermions in quasi-one-dimensional topological phases using nonlocal order parameters

Yasaman Bahri, Ashvin Vishwanath

Topological phases which host Majorana fermions can not be identified via local order parameters. We give simple nonlocal order parameters to distinguish quasi-one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductors of spinless fermions, for any interacting model in the absence of time reversal symmetry. These string or ``brane'' order parameters are natural for measurements in cold atom systems using quantum gas microscopy. We propose them as a way to identify symmetry-protected topological phases of Majorana fermions in cold atom experiments via bulk rather than edge degrees of freedom. Subsequently, we study two-dimensional (2D) topological superconductors via the quasi-1D limit of coupling $N$ identical chains on the cylinder. We classify the symmetric, interacting topological phases protected by the additional ${\mathbb{Z}}_{N}$ translation symmetry. The phases include quasi-1D analogs of (i) the $p+ip$ chiral topological superconductor, which can be distinguished up to the 2D Chern number mod 2, and (ii) the 2D weak topological superconductor. We devise general rules for constructing nonlocal order parameters which distinguish the phases. These rules encode the signature of the fermionic topological phase in the symmetry properties of the terminating operators of the nonlocal string or brane. The nonlocal order parameters for some of these phases simply involve a product of the string order parameters for the individual chains. Finally, we give a physical picture of one of the topological phases as a condensate of certain defects, which motivates the form of the nonlocal order parameter and is reminiscent of higher dimensional constructions of topological phases.

We propose a systematic framework to classify (2+1)-dimensional (2+1D) fermionic topological orders without symmetry and 2+1D fermionic/bosonic topological orders with symmetry GGG. The key is to use the so-called symmetric fusion category E\mathcal{E}E to describe the symmetry. Here, E=sRep(Z2f)\mathcal{E}=\mathrm{sRep}({\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{f})E=sRep(Z2f) describing particles in a fermionic product state without symmetry, or E=sRep(Gf)[E=Rep(G)]\mathcal{E}=\mathrm{sRep}({G}^{f}) [\mathcal{E}=\mathrm{Rep}(G)]E=sRep(Gf)[E=Rep(G)] describing particles in a fermionic (bosonic) product state with symmetry GGG.
