The local characterization of global tensor network eigenstates

José Garre Rubio, András Molnár, Norbert Schuch +1 more

We study the conditions under which Matrix Product States (MPS) or Matrix Product Operators are exact eigenvectors of an extensive local operator, such as a Hamiltonian. By suitably choosing the local operator, this covers a wide range of settings: Exact eigenstates of Hamiltonians, including scar states, exact MPS trajectories for driven quantum systems, steady states of local Lindbladians, generalized symmetries of either Hamiltonians or density matrices, and many more. Our key result is that a local, fixed-size equation---namely, how a single term in the operator acts on a block of tensors---provides a necessary and sufficient condition for exact solutions. This local characterization allows us to obtain the full space of MPS solutions to all of the aforementioned problems; in particular, we exemplify the power of our results by recovering the quantum group symmetries of the XXZ model. We also discuss applications to numerical algorithms with MPS and the generalization of our results to 2D, i.e., projected entangled pair states (PEPS).

On two-dimensional tensor network group symmetries

José Garre-Rubio, András Molnár

Abstract We introduce two-dimensional tensor-network representations of finite groups carrying a 4-cocycle index. We characterize the associated gapped (2+1)D phases that emerge when these anomalous symmetries act on tensor-network ground states. We further develop related tensor-network unitaries that generate symmetric states representing (3+1)D symmetry-protected topological phases. Although aspects of these constructions have been previously addressed, our contribution unifies them within a single tensor-network framework and emphasizes the explicit formulation of local tensor equations encoding global consistency conditions.

Spectral tensor networks for many-body localization

Anushya Chandran, Juan Carrasquilla, Isaac H. Kim +2 more

Subsystems of strongly disordered, interacting quantum systems can fail to thermalize because of the phenomenon of many-body localization (MBL). In this paper, we explore a tensor network description of the eigenspectra of such systems. Specifically, we will argue that the presence of a complete set of local integrals of motion in MBL implies an efficient representation of the entire spectrum of energy eigenstates with a single tensor network, a spectral tensor network. Our results are rigorous for a class of idealized systems related to MBL with integrals of motion of finite support. In one spatial dimension, the spectral tensor network allows for the efficient computation of expectation values of a large class of operators (including local operators and string operators) in individual energy eigenstates and in ensembles.
