The Angle Fixed by Coupling Angular Momenta Is a Triangle's Angle Before Any Limit Is Taken ── Taking the quantum magnitudes as the sides makes it the law of cosines itself, and the 4π cancels under normalization ── the separator is whether the distribution is written in solid angle or in cosine ── [Paper 1065]
Coupling two angular momenta fixes the angle between them. There is a way of speaking according to which, in the limit of large spins, that angle approaches a uniform distribution on the sphere. This paper splits that statement in two and shows with numbers that only one half holds. No new theorem and no new physical law is claimed. Scope of this paper (scope note): No new theorem and no new physical law is claimed──the coupling of angular momenta, the formula for the cosine of the angle between them, the law of cosines and the positive semidefiniteness of a correlation matrix are all standard. No theorem of spin geometry is proved──the stronger claim, that three-dimensional angles emerge from measurement probabilities, is not entered. What is measured is the behaviour of the semiclassical angle formula. Area quantization is not derived──no counting of microstates of the kind quantum gravity attempts is carried out. No spacetime is built from a network of spins──only the geometry of the angles that coupling fixes is treated. The measurement probabilities themselves are not assembled──what is used in the second section is a weight that counts states, not a probability obtained by actually assembling the coupling coefficients. Why the quantum magnitude takes the form it does is not answered──the form of the eigenvalue is borrowed as a premise. The two are not called one root──the square of the circle constant that appears in the last section and the 4π of solid angle come from different places, and no mechanism by which moving one moves the other has been measured. Relation to earlier papers: Paper 67 read the 4π as a solid angle and showed it to be twice the circle constant times the Euler characteristic of the sphere──this paper places one site at which that 4π disappears inside a normalized probability. Paper 73 split the coefficient in black-hole entropy into the 4π of solid angle and a thermal factor, declaring that no counting of microstates would be performed──this paper keeps to that line, counting states only as a weight on the distribution of angles. Paper 140 showed that symmetry fixes ratios and dynamics fixes the scale, and that the coupling coefficients and the reduced matrix elements are both facts──what is used here is only the magnitude side of that coupling. Paper 104 set down the language for not conflating the several things called "spin"──the "spin" here is the magnitude of an angular momentum, not the algebraic object. Paper 300 showed that whether two things share a root is decidable──following that discipline, the two appearances of the circle constant are not called one root. What is added is measuring that weighting by the number of states brings the distribution to uniformity while dropping the weight does not, showing by the ratio of the two ways of writing that no 4π appears in that limit, confirming that the angles of a closed triple sum to exactly 2π before any limit is taken and that the reason is the law of cosines, and showing that the fraction of cosine triples realizable in three dimensions has a closed form. First, that the distribution approaches uniformity does hold──weighting by the number of states, the departure from uniformity is 0.301393728223 at magnitude 10 and 0.006535460601 at magnitude 640, while dropping the weight leaves it at 1.733502538071, unmoved. Second, and this is the core. No 4π appears in that limit──writing the same uniform distribution in solid angle gives density 0.079577471546 and writing it in cosine gives 0.500000000000, a ratio of exactly 6.283185307180. The 4π belongs to the way of writing and cancels under normalization. Third, there is exactly one place where the 4π survives──the unnormalized solid angle per state is 0.024495849151 at magnitude 256, which is 4π divided by the 513 states. Fourth, when three close, the angles sum to exactly 2π before any limit is taken──from magnitude 10 to 2560 the largest departure from 2π was 8.882×10⁻¹⁶. Fifth, the reason is that the coupling formula is the law of cosines itself──the difference from the law of cosines for a triangle whose sides are the quantum magnitudes is at most 1.209×10⁻¹⁶, and replacing the denominator by the bare magnitudes makes the sum 6.288190534258. Sixth, three cosines laid side by side need not be three-dimensional angles──the fraction of random triples that are realizable in three dimensions is 0.615545, agreeing with the closed form 0.616850275068 to 1.201 standard errors. What appears here is not 4π. Stated plainly──no theorem of spin geometry is proved. What is measured is the behaviour of the semiclassical angle formula, and the measurement probabilities themselves are not assembled. Closing: the angle fixed by coupling angular momenta is a triangle’s angle before any limit is taken. That the distribution approaches uniformity does hold──weighting by the number of states shrinks the departure from 0.301393728223 to 0.006535460601, while dropping the weight leaves it at 1.733502538071. But no 4π appears in that limit──the same distribution has density 0.079577471546 in solid angle and 0.500000000000 in cosine, a ratio of exactly 6.283185307180. The 4π survives only in a quantity that is not normalized──the solid angle per state is 0.024495849151 at magnitude 256. When three close, the angles sum to exactly 2π before any limit──the largest departure was 8.882×10⁻¹⁶. The reason is that the coupling formula is the law of cosines itself──the difference is at most 1.209×10⁻¹⁶, and replacing the denominator makes the sum 6.288190534258. Three cosines need not be three-dimensional angles──the fraction of random triples that pass is 0.615545, agreeing with the closed form 0.616850275068 to 1.201 standard errors. Stated plainly──no theorem of spin geometry is proved and no area quantization is derived. The measurement probabilities themselves are not assembled. The separator──whether the distribution is written in solid angle or in cosine. The former keeps the 4π, the latter cancels it, and the distribution is one and the same. Symmetry fixes the ratios, dynamics fixes the scale - a census of the Wigner-Eckart theorem. The Wigner-Eckart theorem splits a matrix element of a tensor operator into a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient and a reduced matrix element. This paper writes that this split is not the corpus's split into convention and fact, and that there are in truth three layers, not two. NO NEW MATHEMATICAL THEOREM AND NO NEW PHYSICAL LAW IS CLAIMED. Wigner, Eckart, the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and the Condon-Shortley phase convention are all standard. The coefficient values were computed here with sympy's Clebsch-Gordan implementation. First, the counting is the whole of the claim. The matrix elements run over three magnetic quantum numbers, so their number is fixed by the dimensions of the multiplets and the rank: twenty-seven when both angular momenta are one and the rank is one, twenty-four for three halves and one half at rank one, forty-five for two and one at rank one, and a hundred and twenty-five for two and two at rank two. The theorem collapses all of them to a single number. Everything else is a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient, a number the group decides. Second, the ratios are fixed with no free parameter. Computing all twenty-seven coefficients for the case where both angular momenta are one and the rank is one, six are nonzero, and each is the square root of two over two with one sign or the other. All are therefore fixed multiples of one another, and not one free parameter enters the ratios. Moreover a selection rule appears that could not have been anticipated. The coefficient with all three magnetic quantum numbers zero vanishes, so within the multiplet of angular momentum one the matrix element joining the two states of zero magnetic quantum number through the zero component of a vector operator is zero. It vanishes although the rule on magnetic quantum numbers is satisfied. Knowing only that rule, this zero cannot be predicted; the theorem gives not only which transitions are allowed but where an allowed one nevertheless vanishes. Third, the selection rules are the theorem's zero set. Listing the coefficients at zero magnetic quantum number for a rank-one tensor operator: from angular momentum zero to zero the coefficient vanishes and the transition is forbidden; from zero to one it is one and allowed; from one to two it is the square root of six over three and allowed; from one to three it vanishes and is forbidden. That a transition from zero to zero is forbidden for a vector operator is exactly the coefficient vanishing there. A selection rule is thus not an extra assumption but the statement about ratios read where the coefficient is zero; the rule and the ratio are one statement read in two places. One caution: from one to one the transition is allowed by the rule on angular momentum, yet the coefficient vanishes at zero magnetic quantum number. The rule about the angular momentum and the rule about the magnetic quantum number are separate statements (Paper 17). Fourth, and this is the core. There are three layers, not two. Multiplying the reduced matrix element by an arbitrary phase makes the individual matrix elements move with that phase while it cancels in every ratio (confirmed here symbolically). So there are three layers: the Clebsch-Gordan coefficient, a forced geometry decided by the group; the size of the reduced matrix element, a dynamics decided by measurement; and its phase and sign, a convention we choose (Condon-Shortley). What matters here is that what Wigner-Eckart separates is not convention from fact. The Clebsch-Gordan coefficient and the reduced matrix element are both facts, one decided by the group and the other by measurement, and the separator is not whether we chose it but what the answer depends on. The convention exists separately, as a third layer, and applying the corpus's dichotomy directly would miss it. Only the ratios reach observation, and the phase disappears there. Paper 112 called the roll on the shape in which a region is allotted and inside it there is freedom, across six distinct roots; here too the frame is allotted and only one number inside is free, though the address differs, there the freedom of states and here the freedom of a coupling strength. Fifth, the theorem gives no magnitude whatever. The reduced matrix element is entirely undetermined by symmetry, and the group says nothing about whether a transition is strong or weak; it says only how the strengths within a multiplet are related. The same shape appears here for a third time. Paper 129 said that the one half comes from mathematics and Planck's constant from physics, and Paper 131 that the natural logarithm of two is a convention while the temperature is physics. Here the ratios come from symmetry and the scale from dynamics. All three are the same shape: the form and the scale arrive from different places. This is not to say the result is light. That the ratios are completely fixed is itself a strong prediction: one measurement determines the whole multiplet, and a measurement departing from the ratios throws the symmetry assumption into doubt. The statement is shaped so as to be refutable. IMPORTANT (scope): a census of established standard material (Layer 2). Every work cited is standard. What is not claimed: any new mathematical theorem (there is none) / any new physical law (there is none) / that the Wigner-Eckart theorem is in error (it is not) / that symmetry is powerless (it is not; fixing every ratio is a strong prediction). What is added: making explicit that the symmetry-dynamics split is not the convention-fact split, counting the phase as a third layer, confirming the invariance of ratios symbolically, and exhibiting a selection rule invisible in advance. What remains: 'symmetry explains the spectrum' is half a sentence. What symmetry explains is the ratios within a multiplet and not the size of any one of them, and in reading a ratio one should check that the third layer, the phase, has cancelled. Only two of the three layers ever reach observation. On the making of this work: The ideas and content of this work stem from the author's own considerations. This paper places the kinematics of quantum mechanics on a new mathematical foundation. From the self-containment of the totality, represented by the empty set under the iterated power set, one verdict supplies two orthogonal axes and an order-four rotation whose square reverses every direction. The one quadratic quantity the rotation leaves fixed is the Euclidean length, and under one stated condition, that the share of an outcome is quadratic in the coordinates, the same invariance fixes the square rule, the Born rule. A further doubling gives the state space with a relative phase and the two-valued spin with its double cover. Recorded frequency is constructed as a count and shown to agree with the share at the resolution of the reading. On that length the singlet correlation is the negative cosine of the angle between the settings, and the four-term combination is bounded by two times the square root of two, which is attained: this is why nature stops at the Tsirelson bound. The rotation is the imaginary unit of the standard formulation and the complex structure of the real formulations; produced with the continuum, it survives any real rewrite. One tested claim follows, that scalar phases on one mode commute, confirmed to 0.03 degrees, and one reading, that extension between two systems is realized in the measurement relating them.
Paper 160 showed that one inequality carries three ceilings, and divided them: 2 is combinatorial, 2√2 is geometric, 4 is arithmetic. Its scope note then said that it does not answer why nature stops at 2√2. This paper does not answer that either──it answers a different question, namely what sets that ceiling. No new theorem or law is claimed. Scope of this paper (scope note): No new theorem or law is claimed──Bell’s inequality, its chained form with more settings, the no-signalling condition, and the procedure of alternately optimising state and measurements are all standard. Why nature stops at that ceiling is not answered──that is an open research question. What is written here is what moves the ceiling and what does not. The ceiling is not derived from a principle──work deriving the quantum ceiling from principles such as information causality or local orthogonality is not entered into. Only numbers computed here are written. A search maximum is not called an upper bound──alternating optimisation evaluates from below. What can be said is that the value is reached and that no configuration exceeding it was found. No link to 4π is drawn──Section 7 compares them and measures that none is close. The period-doubling constant is not said to share a root──it is written only that two examples exist in which structure fixes a non-integer real number. Experiments are not discussed──how far loophole-free experiments have confirmed this ceiling lies outside the scope. Relation to earlier papers: Paper 160 took a census of three ceilings over one inequality, divided them as combinatorial, geometric and arithmetic, and said in its scope note that it does not answer why nature stops at 2√2──this paper does not answer that either. It answers what sets the ceiling, which is a different question. Paper 227 measured that the value of a PR box reaches 4 with signalling 0──that algebraic ceiling is cited here as the destination reached as settings are added. Paper 11 computed that an entangled pair gives exactly 2√2──that is taken as the starting point, and dimension, number of settings and state are then moved. Paper 164 measured the polytope built from local assignments and the distance to its face──the classical ceiling here comes from enumerating the same assignments exhaustively. Paper 68 showed that a qubit is the Hopf map itself and that an angle on the sphere is twice the angle between states──that the optimal configuration of Section 6 is 90 degrees on the sphere and 45 degrees between states is that doubling. Paper 1055 showed that numbers separate by whether they move when units are changed──this ceiling is on the unmoving side, and Section 7 measures that with a control. Paper 1061 wrote that an exit exists by which structure produces a non-integer real number──this ceiling is a second example, and one that can be written exactly in closed form. Paper 300 showed that whether two things share a root is decidable──following that discipline, the two examples are not called one root. What is added: applying dimension, number of settings and state to one ceiling and separating what moves it from what does not, confirming exhaustively that the quantum-to-algebraic ratio matches a cosine of the number of settings, showing in numbers that two ratios move in opposite directions, and measuring and rejecting any link to 4π. First, enlarging the space does not move the ceiling──optimising state and measurements alternately from two levels up to five, all four reach 2.828427124746, with a spread of 2.220×10⁻¹⁵. Second, and this is the core. Increasing the number of measurements does move it──with n settings on each side, the quantum ceiling divided by the algebraic one is 0.707106781187 at n=2 and 0.999969158 at n=200. Third, two ratios then move in opposite directions──the algebraic ceiling is approached, while the margin over the classical one falls from 1.414213562373 to 1.004994128. The algebraic side moves by +0.292862376 and the classical side by -0.409219434. Fourth, the state moves it too──an unentangled state stops at exactly 2.000000000, and only a maximally entangled one reaches 2.828427125. Fifth, units do not move it──giving directions by components and changing the unit of length four ways leaves a spread of 0.000×10⁰, while the same changes move the dimensionful speed of light by a relative 1.000000×10⁹. Stated plainly──why nature stops at this ceiling is not answered. Any link to 4π was measured and rejected: the nearest candidate differs by a relative 0.113773075. Closing: what sets the quantum ceiling is not dimension but the number of measurements. The size of the space has no effect──from two levels to five, all four reach 2.828427124746, with a spread of only 2.220×10⁻¹⁵. The number of settings does have an effect──the quantum ceiling divided by the algebraic one runs from 0.707106781187 to 0.999969157645, agreeing with a closed form to within 1.110×10⁻¹⁶ at all nine values. Two ratios then move in opposite directions──the algebraic side rises by +0.292862376 and the classical side falls by -0.409219434. The gap ratio is 94.964608512 and the excess ratio 2.399321556. The state has an effect too──an unentangled state stops at 2.000000000, and only a maximally entangled one reaches the ceiling. Units have none──four changes leave a spread of 0.000×10⁰, while the control speed of light moves by 1.000000×10⁹. Stated plainly──why nature stops at this ceiling is not answered. There is no link to 4π either──the nearest candidate differs by a relative 0.113773075. Alternating optimisation evaluates from below and is not a proof of the bound. The separator──whether one moves the size of the space or the number of measurements. Moving the former leaves the ceiling untouched; moving the latter moves the ceiling itself. Chapter 11 is devoted to the quantum theory of angular momentum. As in classical mechanics, working with angular momentum requires leaving the one-dimensional space, with all the complications that this entails. The importance of angular momentum resides in at least three facts: i) central problems are of particular interest; (ii) many particles have an intrinsic angular momentum (the spin); and iii) the physics of angular momentum involves features such as the so-called space quantization. The first part of the chapter deals with the orbital angular momentum and its eigenfunctions, the spherical harmonics. Its algebraic properties, embodied in the matrix representation, allow for an extension of the theory to half-integer angular momentum in terms of Pauli matrices, as well as the addition of angular momenta.
Passing light through a few polarisers and back to its original polarisation, it is easy to assume the light has returned to what it was. This paper follows the state of polarisation as a point on the Poincaré sphere and compares the phase left after a closed path with the solid angle the path encloses. No new theorem or law is claimed. Scope of this paper (scope note): No new theorem or law is claimed──that a closed path of polarisations acquires a phase of half the solid angle (Pancharatnam 1956), that this is the same as Berry’s phase (1984; Berry 1987), and that the state space of polarisation is a Hopf fibration are all known. No real optical system is claimed──the number, angles and amplitudes of the polarisers are model values, not those of any apparatus. Partial polarisation and loss are not entered──only projections of fully polarised light are treated; partial polarisation, differential absorption and non-adiabatic effects are not included. The origin of the phase is not entered──that the phase is the holonomy of a Hopf fibration is the matter of Paper 68; here only the numbers for light are given. Relation to earlier papers: Paper 68 showed that the qubit is a Hopf fibration and that the Berry phase is measurable as the holonomy -Omega/2 of its fibre──the two-component Jones vector used here has the same form as a spin-1/2 spinor, and the same function gives the same phase. Since the formula, not merely the number, is the same, this is written as the same root in the sense of Paper 300. Paper 207 showed that there are three tools for writing polarisation and that the Jones vector cannot write unpolarised light──here the closed path is followed on the third of them, the Poincaré sphere. Paper 08 showed that in the Hopf fibration (the map from S^3 to S^2 whose fibre is S^1) the area of the base times the circumference of the fibre is the volume of the whole──here the base is the Poincaré sphere and the fibre is the phase of the polarisation. Paper 18 separated three roots of 2pi and took one of them to be the solid angle of a hemisphere──here the hemisphere’s solid angle 2pi becomes a phase of pi. What is added is checking the phase of closed paths made of polariser projections against -Omega/2 on random triangles, showing in numbers that on the hemispherical path the amplitude returns while the sign does not, measuring the convergence as the steps are refined, and placing the separator on intensity versus interference. First, the map to the state of polarisation is the Hopf map──the Stokes vectors built from 2000 two-component complex vectors all lie on the unit sphere and do not move, to the order of 10^-15, when an overall phase is applied (Section 2). Second, and this is the core. The phase of a closed path is half the solid angle enclosed──returning through three polarisers A-> B-> C-> A, the phase arg( A|C)( C|B)( B|A) agreed with -Omega/2 of the enclosed solid angle within 10^-9 for five random triangles (for instance Omega=-5.580641 gives phase +2.790320). The reverse path gives +Omega/2, which equals -(4pi-Omega)/2 modulo 2pi (Section 2). Third, enclosing a hemisphere flips the sign──turning a linear polarisation through half a turn in N steps and back (once around the equator, Omega=2pi) gives a phase of pi for every N from 3 to 384 (Section 3). Fourth, the amplitude returns but the sign does not──the surviving amplitude is cos^N(pi/N), rising from 0.125000 at N=3 to 0.987231 at N=384, yet the intensity when overlaid in phase with a reference cancels to 0.000041 at N=384 (Section 3). Fifth, finer steps converge to the half on any path──around a circle of angular radius 10 degrees near circular polarisation (Omega=0.095456), the phase moves from -0.039621 at N=6 to -0.047728 at N=1536, within 1.30x10^-7 of -Omega/2 (Section 4). Sixth, the separator is whether one measures intensity alone or the phase by interference with a reference──by intensity alone, the finer the steps the more fully the light returns; overlaid with a reference, the hemisphere’s phase pi remains as darkness. The formula is that of the same two-component vector as a spin-1/2 qubit, and shares its root with the -Omega/2 of Paper 68 (Section 5). Carrying a polarisation around a closed path shifts its phase by half the solid angle enclosed, and enclosing a hemisphere flips the sign: the same half as the Berry phase of a qubit. The phases of triangular paths made of polariser projections agreed with -Omega/2 in all five cases, and on the path that turns a linear polarisation through half a turn and back the phase was pi independently of N──the surviving amplitude returned to 0.987231 at N=384, yet overlaid with a reference the intensity cancelled to 0.000041. On a small circle too the phase converged to -Omega/2 as the steps were refined, the reverse path gave +Omega/2, and the full sphere 4pi corresponded to a phase of 2pi──what returned was the state; the phase remembers half the sky enclosed. Placed among the earlier papers──the same formula as the qubit of Paper 68 (the same root) was counted with light, on the Hopf fibration of Paper 08 and the Poincaré sphere of Paper 207. To be honest──the apparatus values are a model, neither partial polarisation nor loss was included, and the origin of the phase was left to Paper 68.
