Abstract

Abstract We study a non-Hermitian Ising chain with a power-law quasiperiodic field h j = h cos p (2 παj + φ ), where the positive integer p controls the power of the modulation. The model admits an exact site-factorized similarity transformation that maps the quasi-Hermitian regime onto a real quasiperiodic Ising chain. We derive the exact zero-mode edge-localization boundary and show that the critical field on the quasi-Hermitian branch scales as 2 p , while the associated localization-length exponent remains unity for all p . At the boundary, the variance of the logarithmic coupling fluctuations is enhanced exactly by a factor of p 2 . In the quasi-Hermitian regime, the factorized similarity transformation shows that the spatial biorthogonal entanglement spectrum is identical to that of the Hermitian counterpart. The half-chain entanglement entropy exhibits approximately logarithmic growth over the accessible sizes, with a p -dependent finite-size slope. We finally discuss a possible realization using state-selective loss and conditional no-jump dynamics.

Entanglement transitions in a periodically driven non-Hermitian Ising chain

Tista Banerjee, K. Sengupta

We study entanglement transitions in a periodically driven Ising chain in the presence of an imaginary transverse field $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ as a function of drive frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}$. In the high drive amplitude and frequency regime, we find a critical value $\ensuremath{\gamma}={\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}$ below which the steady-state half-chain entanglement entropy, ${S}_{L/2}$, scales with chain length $L$ as ${S}_{L/2}\ensuremath{\sim}lnL$; in contrast, for $\ensuremath{\gamma}>{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}$, it becomes independent of $L$. In the small $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ limit, we compute the coefficient, $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, of the $lnL$ term analytically using a Floquet perturbation theory and trace its origin to the presence of Fisher-Hartwig jump singularities in the correlation function of the driven chain. We also study the frequency dependence of ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}$ and show that ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ at special drive frequencies; at these frequencies, which we analytically compute, ${S}_{L/2}$ remain independent of $L$ for all $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. This behavior can be traced to an approximate emergent symmetry of the Floquet Hamiltonian at these drive frequencies which we identify. Finally, we discus the behavior of the driven system at low and intermediate drive frequencies. Our analysis shows the presence of volume law behavior of the entanglement in this regime ${S}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\ell}$ for small subsystem length $\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\le}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{*}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D})$. We identify ${\ensuremath{\ell}}^{*}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D})$ and tie its existence to the effective long-range nature of the Floquet Hamiltonian of the driven chain for small subsystem size. We discuss the applicability of our results to other integrable non-Hermitian models.

Interplay of Quasiperiodic Criticality and the Non-Hermitian Skin Effect

Zhangyuan Chen, Xianqi Tong, Xiaosen Yang

Quasiperiodic lattices can host critical eigenstates, whereas nonreciprocal hopping in non-Hermitian lattices can induce non-Hermitian skin effect. In this work, we investigate localization phenomena in a Hatano--Nelson model with quasiperiodically modulated hopping amplitudes, where nonreciprocity arises from unequal modulation strengths of the right and left hoppings. Using a non-unitary gauge transformation, we map the non-Hermitian system into a Hermitian quasiperiodic system and obtain an exact analytical expression for the Lyapunov exponent in the thermodynamic limit. Under periodic boundary conditions, inverse participation ratios and finite-size scaling analysis are used to identify the quasiperiodic critical regimes. The comparison shows that parameter regimes hosting quasiperiodic critical states under periodic boundary conditions can exhibit the non-Hermitian skin effect under open boundary conditions. Furthermore, the non-Hermitian skin effect associated with quasiperiodic critical regimes is also observed in representative long-range hopping models and multiband extensions. Our results provide an analytically controlled perspective on how quasiperiodicity, modulated nonreciprocity, and boundary conditions jointly shape the non-Hermitian skin effect in critical regimes.

Quasiperiodic Skin Criticality in an Exactly Solvable Non-Hermitian Quasicrystal

Zhangyuan Chen, Muhammad Idrees, Ying Yang +2 more

Critical states in quasiperiodic systems defy the conventional dichotomy between extended and localized states. In this work, we demonstrate that non-Hermiticity fundamentally reshapes this paradigm by giving rise to an exactly solvable quasiperiodic critical phase with no energy selectivity. We introduce a non-Hermitian quasiperiodic lattice based on a modulated Hatano-Nelson model and uncover a new universality class of quasiperiodic skin criticality, in which all eigenstates share an identical multifractal spatial structure. Through a nonunitary gauge transformation, the system is mapped onto a disorder-free lattice, enabling exact analytical solutions for the full spectrum and eigenstates. As a consequence, the inverse participation ratio is strictly energy-independent and controlled solely by a global phase. We further show that this criticality persists in multiband lattices, establishing a general and analytically controlled framework for non-Hermitian quasiperiodic critical phenomena.

Yang-Lee edge singularity and quantum criticality in non-Hermitian PXP model

Wen-Yi Zhang, Meng-Yun Mao, Qing-Min Hu +3 more

We present a comprehensive theoretical framework for quantum criticality in the non-Hermitian detuned PXP model, and establish the complete phase diagram, which had remained elusive in previous studies. Starting from a numerically identified phase transition point, we construct an exact second-order phase transition boundary through a similarity transformation in the real-energy regime. By introducing the biorthogonal entanglement entropy and biorthogonal Loschmidt echo, we demonstrate from both equilibrium and nonequilibrium perspectives that this transition belongs to the Ising universality class. Using the correlation function, we further distinguish between confined and deconfined phases within the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric region. In the complex-energy regime, we identify both a full $\mathcal{PT}$ transition and a first-excited-state $\mathcal{PT}$ transition, respectively. Moreover, we identify the location of the Yang-Lee edge singularity (YLES) using both the associated-biorthogonal and self-normal Loschmidt echoes, and extract the corresponding critical exponent, which agrees with the predictions of nonunitary conformal field theory. Finally, we propose an experimental scheme to observe the YLES in Rydberg atomic arrays, which offers a promising route to exploring non-Hermitian critical phenomena and singularities in future experimental settings.

Anomalous Localization and Mobility Edges in Non-Hermitian Quasicrystals with Disordered Imaginary Gauge Fields

Guolin Nan, Zhijian Li, Feng Mei +1 more

Localization in non-Hermitian quasicrystals can differ fundamentally from its Hermitian counterpart when non-reciprocity is spatially disordered. Here we study a one-dimensional non-Hermitian Aubry-André-Harper chain with a Bernoulli imaginary gauge field and quasiperiodic onsite modulation. In the nearest-neighbor limit, we identify an anomalous transition from a fully erratic non-Hermitian skin effect (ENHSE) phase to a fully localized phase. Although the fractal dimension vanishes in both regimes, the Lyapunov exponent and the fluctuation of the eigenstate center of mass sharply distinguish them. For generic finite-size realizations, this transition is further accompanied by a complex-to-real spectral change under periodic boundary conditions and a change of spectral winding from nontrivial to trivial. With weak next-nearest-neighbor hopping, we uncover an anomalous mobility edge at the same location as in the Hermitian generalized Aubry-André-Harper model, but separating Anderson-localized states from ENHSE-type macroscopic-accumulation states rather than extended states. We further show that this anomalous localization structure is reflected in spectral winding and wave-packet dynamics: single realizations exhibit winding-dependent drift, winding-resolved averaging preserves opposite directional responses, and full disorder averaging largely restores Hermitian-like transport. Our results establish practical diagnostics of anomalous localization and mobility edges in non-Hermitian quasicrystals.

Many-body localization in spin chain systems with quasiperiodic fields

Mac Lee, Thomas Look, S. P. Lim +1 more

We study the many-body localization of spin chain systems with quasiperiodic fields. We identify the lower bound for the critical disorder necessary to drive the transition between the thermal and many-body localized phase to be ${W}_{c}>1.85$, based on finite-size scaling of entanglement entropy and fluctuations of the bipartite magnetization. We also examine the time evolution of the entanglement entropy of an initial product state where we find power-law and logarithmic growth for the thermal and many-body localized phases, respectively, with a transition point ${W}_{c}\ensuremath{\sim}2.5$. For larger disorder strength, both imbalance and spin-glass order are preserved at long times, while spin-glass order shows dependence on system size. Quasiperiodic fields have been applied in different experimental systems, and our study finds that such fields are very efficient at driving the many-body localized phase transition.
