Quantum fluctuations, spontaneous symmetry breaking, and thermodynamic entropy increase constitute the core phenomena of quantum mechanics, particle physics, and statistical thermodynamics respectively. However, their underlying driving causes have long been treated as separate postulates or empirical laws, lacking a unified ontological explanation. Based on the framework of independent degrees of freedom, this paper reconstructs the fundamental building‑blocks of a system as elementary degrees of freedom that are independently addressable and self‑evolving. Layer‑by‑layer deductions demonstrate that the self‑evolution of independent degrees of freedom serves as the shared ontological origin of the three phenomena mentioned above. Quantum fluctuations are intrinsically deviations arising from the independent evolution of conjugate degrees of freedom; spontaneous symmetry breaking denotes the inevitable destabilization of finely‑tuned symmetric configurations under fluctuations of degrees of freedom; entropy increase is the coarse‑grained manifestation of spontaneous configuration diffusion among vast numbers of degrees of freedom. Rather than mutually independent edicts of nature, these three phenomena represent hierarchical manifestations of the same underlying dynamics across different scales and constraint conditions. The framework of independent degrees of freedom achieves ontological unification spanning from micro‑quantum regimes to macroscopic thermodynamics, offering a first‑principle perspective for understanding the evolutionary direction of the physical world.
In the framework of modern physics, core phenomena including quantum fluctuations, the uncertainty principle, superposition, quantum entanglement, spontaneous symmetry breaking, and thermodynamic entropy increase belong to separate domains. Each is supported by well‑established mathematical formalisms and experimental validations, yet a unified ontological account remains absent. Their shared cognitive root lies in the default presupposition that “particles are primitive entities bearing physical properties”. Based on the Framework of Independent Degrees of Freedom, this paper reconstructs physical components such as position, spin, momentum and phase as underlying cosmic ontological entities that are independently addressable and autonomously evolving. We first establish the general framework for the global evolutionary spectrum, then conduct layer‑by‑layer derivations from microscopic primitives to macroscopic manifestations. This study demonstrates that autonomous evolution of independent degrees of freedom constitutes the common ontological origin of all foregoing phenomena: quantum fluctuations and uncertainty are intrinsic properties arising from the independent evolution of conjugate degrees of freedom; superposition represents an inherent mode of existence for a single degree of freedom; quantum entanglement corresponds to non‑local coupling configurations of multiple degrees of freedom; spontaneous symmetry breaking denotes the inevitable destabilization of fine‑tuned symmetric configurations under degree‑of‑freedom fluctuations; entropy increase is the coarse‑grained appearance of spontaneous configuration diffusion among vast numbers of degrees of freedom; stable macroscopic configurations emerge as collective effects of strongly coupled constraint networks. The present framework establishes a complete evolutionary chain: *degrees of freedom → fluctuations → gradients → emergence of structures → entropy increase → emergence of spacetime*. It achieves ontological continuity spanning microscopic quantum behaviours to macroscopic thermodynamic processes, and offers a new theoretical route for resolving multiple physical paradoxes and constructing a cross‑scale unified physical picture.
Position is the most fundamental spacetime descriptor in physics. Within the frameworks of classical mechanics and standard quantum mechanics, it has consistently been defined as an intrinsic property and coordinate parameter of particles or fields. Based on the Independent Degrees of Freedom Framework[1][2][3][4][5], this paper achieves an ontological inversion of the concept of position: position is reconstructed from a "property of entities" into an independent fundamental constituent of the universe, namely the position degree of freedom. Five core characteristics of the position degree of freedom are systematically elaborated: ontological independence, intrinsic dispersion, evolutionary autonomy, separable coupling and configurational emergence. On this basis, a unified ontological interpretation is provided for typical physical phenomena across micro, meso and macro scales, including double-slit interference, quantum tunneling, decoherence channels and spatial locality. Finally, potential technical pathways from the perspective of the position degree of freedom are derived along two dimensions: performance optimization of conventional technologies and innovative technologies unique to this framework. Particular emphasis is placed on paradigm-breaking technical directions such as room-temperature quantum devices, precise single-degree-of-freedom addressing, and macroscopic quantum interference engineering. This study demonstrates that the position degree of freedom serves as the core bridge connecting microscopic quantum behaviours and macroscopic spatial appearances. Its ontological reconstruction offers a new epistemological foundation for overcoming bottlenecks in quantum engineering.
Quantum entanglement serves as the core physical resource of quantum information science. Nevertheless, the understanding of its nature and the improvement of its stability have long been constrained by the classical ontological premise that "particles are entities". Based on the independent degree-of-freedom framework[1], this paper reconstructs quantum entanglement as an apparent configuration formed by the coupling of an indivisible holistic internal-state degree of freedom with multiple spatially separated position degrees of freedom. It explains the non-separability, nonlocality and no-superluminal-communication property of entanglement at the ontological level. On this basis, existing entanglement stabilization techniques are classified into two categories: mature methods under the traditional particle ontology framework, and innovative pathways derived from the independent degree-of-freedom framework. This work systematically reviews the technical logic and limitations of conventional schemes such as passive isolation and dynamical decoupling. It emphatically elaborates novel technical routes grounded in the postulates of independent degrees of freedom, including internal-state–position decoupling, environmental degree-of-freedom engineering, and mode-selective precise decoupling. The paradigm differences between the two categories of schemes are compared. The study demonstrates that by shifting the research object from "particle entities" to "coupling relations among degrees of freedom", the independent degree-of-freedom framework offers new ontological insights for breaking the conventional decoherence bottleneck.
In 1925 the concept of electron spin was introduced to explain two experimental observations: the splitting of silver atom beams in an inhomogeneous magnetic field (Stern–Gerlach, 1922), and the fine structure of atomic spectra. The physical picture proposed — an electron spinning on its own axis — was immediately shown by Hendrik Lorentz to require surface velocities exceeding the speed of light. The paper was published anyway. Dirac subsequently rescued the two-valuedness mathematically, whereupon the physical question was declared irrelevant. For one hundred years the field has been unable to state what spin physically is. This paper traces the sequence of observations, inferences, and decisions that produced this situation and identifies two distinct wrong turns. The first wrong turn was publishing a model known to be physically impossible. Lorentz's calculation was correct — at the classical electron radius (2.818 fm), the required surface velocity is 274 times the speed of light. But the classical radius is not the electron's physical rotation radius. The correct rotation radius, derived from the Sagnac closure condition, is 285.5 fm — 101 times larger. At that radius, the rotation velocity is 0.822c, the bare magnetic moment is 0.608 μB, and Lorentz's objection does not arise. Both values are computed explicitly with no free parameters. The second wrong turn was a conflation. The closure geometry of the electron involves two independent numerical facts, both related to the number ½: (1) the least-work oscillation path that closes the Sagnac phase condition is a two-lobe ellipse, giving a winding number of n = ½ in the mass equation; (2) the electron's S³ closure surface presents two poles to the external field, giving a topological factor of 2 in the g-factor. In 1925, both facts were numerically present in the spectroscopic data, but they were collapsed into a single postulate: intrinsic angular momentum ℏ/2. That collapse created a half-integer angular momentum with no classical analogue, forced Dirac to construct the SU(2) spinor formalism to accommodate it, and caused the spinor to appear as a new kind of mathematical object requiring new physics — when it was always a description of closure surface topology. Every experimental result attributed to spin-½ as an intrinsic quantum property — two spots in Stern–Gerlach, the electron magnetic moment, Pauli exclusion, and fine structure — is reproduced by real rotation with two stable orientations, without superluminal motion, without abstract mathematical structure disconnected from physical content, and without the hundred-year admission of ignorance that has accompanied the standard treatment. The mathematical apparatus of quantum mechanics — the Dirac equation, the Pauli matrices, the SU(2) structure — remains valid. What changes is the interpretation. The spinor is not a mysterious new object. It is the natural representation of the two-pole topology of the S³ closure surface. The conflation of 1925 prevented this from being seen. The Pauli Exclusion Principle and the Spin-Statistics Theorem from Worldline Non-Injectivity: Exchange Phase, Rapidity, and Topological Sheet Structure For nearly a century, the Pauli exclusion principle (PEP) and the spin-statistics theorem have stood as foundational postulates of quantum mechanics and relativistic quantum field theory. The PEP dictates that no two identical fermions can occupy the same quantum state, determining the structure of atoms, the stability of matter, and the properties of neutron stars and white dwarfs. The spin-statistics theorem connects the intrinsic spin of a particle to its statistical behavior: half-integer spin particles (fermions) obey Fermi-Dirac statistics, while integer spin particles (bosons) obey Bose-Einstein statistics. Despite their universal success, these principles have never been derived from a more primitive geometric or topological principle — until now. This paper demonstrates that both the Pauli exclusion principle and the spin-statistics theorem emerge naturally and rigorously from a single geometric fact: the **non-injectivity of a timelike worldline** for Lorentz factors exceeding a critical threshold,
γ>γcrit. In this regime, a single worldline intersects a constant-time hypersurface
Σt in
N>1 distinct spatial points, generating a multi‑sheet spacetime structure. This phenomenon, known as **worldline non-injectivity**, is the foundation of the TPST–DGQ framework. **Key results and logical flow:** 1. **Multi‑sheet structure for a single particle:** For
γ>γcrit, a particle's worldline produces
N(ϵ)∼ϵ−(d−2) topological sheets, each carrying the same physical properties (mass, charge, spin) via the Ontological Identity Principle. 2. **Composite worldline for two identical particles:** By combining two identical particles into a composite worldline in configuration space, we obtain a two‑particle sheet structure. Identical particles share isomorphic sheet structures, reducing the
N×N sheet pairs to
N independent pairs. 3. **Exchange as a permutation of sheet blocks:** The exchange operator
P12 swaps the sheet blocks associated with the two particles. This permutation is a topological operation in the two‑particle configuration space. 4. **Exchange phase from winding number:** The exchange path corresponds to half of a complete winding cycle around the fold structure of the composite worldline. The accumulated topological phase is
Φexchange=πw, where
w is the **winding number** of the worldline. Hence the exchange phase factor is
η=eiπw=(−1)w. 5. **Spin from winding number:** The winding number
w is directly related to the spin
s by the requirement that a
4π rotation returns the physical state to itself (single‑valuedness). This yields
w=2s. Therefore
η=(−1)2s: half‑integer spin gives
η=−1 (fermions, antisymmetric), integer spin gives
η=+1 (bosons, symmetric). This is the spin‑statistics theorem derived from geometry. 6. **Pauli exclusion principle:** For two identical fermions (
η=−1) at spatial coincidence, the two‑particle amplitude satisfies
A=ηA, forcing
A=0. Thus no two fermions can occupy the same quantum state. The PEP is no longer a postulate; it is a theorem. 7. **Rapidity as inter‑sheet phase measure:** The rapidity
ζ=artanh(v/c) is shown to be a monotonic function of the inter‑sheet phase difference
Φn. The non‑injectivity threshold
γ>γcrit corresponds to
ζ>ζcrit. The speed of light
c emerges as the asymptotic limit where the inter‑sheet phase diverges, making
v=c unreachable for massive particles. 8. **Universal cancellation identity:** The same algebraic identity
N(ϵ)⋅ϵd−2=O(1) that regularizes holographic entropy, Coulomb self‑energy, wavefunction normalization, electromagnetic fields, and the cosmological constant also regularizes the two‑particle exchange amplitude — zero for fermions, finite for bosons. Quantum statistics thus joins the list of phenomena unified under the principle of worldline non‑injectivity. **Implications:** This work completes the derivation of the foundations of quantum mechanics within the TPST–DGQ framework, following previous derivations of the Born rule, the Schrödinger equation, Planck’s constant, and wavefunction collapse. It also establishes a geometric origin for the spin‑statistics connection, a result that in standard physics relies on the heavy machinery of relativistic quantum field theory (unitarity, causality, positivity of energy). Here, it follows from the topology of worldline folds. This manuscript is current in Official Peer Review. Not final version.Copyright©2026 Alex De Giuseppe.All rights reserved.
