Security analysis and enhancement of a cryptosystem based on phase truncation and a designed amplitude modulator

Y. Xiong, A. He, Chenggen Quan

In this paper, the security of a cryptosystem based on phase truncation and a designed amplitude modulator (AM) is evaluated. In the cryptosystem, an undercover AM used as an additional key is added to modulate the amplitude information of the spectrum in the Fourier plane. Compared to the conventional phase-truncated Fourier transform (PTFT)-based cryptosystem, the security of the cryptosystem is improved by increasing the number of unknown keys. However, it is found that the designed AM is irrelative to the plaintext, and one of the parameters in the designed AM contributes less to the security enhancement of the cryptosystem due to low key sensitivity. Based on the analysis, a special attack containing two iterative processes is proposed to crack the cryptosystem, in which the known-plaintext-attack-based iterative process I with a specific normalization operator is used to retrieve the designed AM and the amplitude-phase-retrieval-technique-based iterative process II is used to retrieve the corresponding plaintext from the arbitrarily given ciphertext with the help of the retrieved AM. In addition, an inherent drawback widely existing in PTFT-based cryptosystems is reported for the first time: most information of the original image could be retrieved using two correct phase keys (or only the first phase key) generated in the encryption process, even without the corresponding ciphertext in PTFT-based cryptosystems. To address this issue, a security-enhanced cryptosystem is proposed in this paper. Numerical simulation is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed attack and cryptosystem.

Transformation of spatial modulation of a light field into amplitude modulation in the interaction of a superposition of transverse modes of a He-Ne laser with iodine-127 vapors

Andrey V. Mironov

The observation of “spatial-modulation” resonances of saturated absorption in the interaction of iodine-127 vapors with a superposition of frequency-nondegenerate TEM 01 and TEM 10 transverse modes of a linear laser is reported. The modulation of the total radiation power of the probing wave, recorded at twice the beating frequency of transverse modes of the laser, is interpreted to be the result of the transformation of modulation of the spatial distribution of the field into its amplitude modulation under the action of nonlinearly absorbing iodine vapors. Resonances of saturated absorption of the weak line R (127)11-5 of iodine-127 (633 nm) in an extracavity cell are observed by the method proposed.

Effect of modulated amplitude on oscillation of population probability

FU Zhen-xing

To explore the physical mechanism induced by a frequency-modulated light field, the phenomenon of the oscillation of population probability in a two-level system under a frequency-modulated field is analyzed theoretically by means of the density matrix equation and Bloch vector model. The effect of the modulated amplitude on the process of the oscillation is also discussed. The results show that the oscillation of population probability and population transfer is modulated by the modulated amplitude.Increasing the modulated amplitude when the other parameters are fixed, the oscillation of population probability is weakened, and the efficiency of population transfer and the absorption are enhanced. The analysis in Bloch vector model shows that the population oscillation reflects the dynamic transformation process among the population transfer, absorption and polarization in the quantum system.
