Direct spectroscopy of the2S1/2−2P1/2and2D3/2−2P1/2transitions and observation of micromotion modulated spectra in trapped40Ca+

Thaned Pruttivarasin, Michael T. Ramm, Hartmut Häffner

We present an experimental scheme to perform spectroscopy on ions and atoms with a lambda-level structure. By rapidly switching lasers between both transitions, we circumvent the complications of both dark resonances and the ac-Stark effect. We demonstrate the scheme on the 2 S 1/2 − 2 P 1/2 and 2 D 3/2 − 2 P 1/2 transitions in 40 Ca + and, within a measurement time of 10 min, extract the centre frequencies of both dipole transitions with a statistical uncertainty on the order of 200 kHz. We also apply this method to directly observe the micromotion modulated fluorescence spectra of both transitions and for the first time measure the dependence of the micromotion modulation index on the trap frequency for both transitions.

Design and Characteristic Measurement of Miniature Three-Segment Linear Paul Trap

T. Furukawa, Jin Nishimura, U. Tanaka +1 more

We have fabricated a miniature three-segment linear Paul trap with r 0=0.6 mm and 2Z 0=4 mm. In order to perform quantum-state manipulation of trapped 40 Ca+ ions, we discuss the required harmonic oscillation frequencies which allow us to perform effective sideband cooling and have measured those that depend on the dimensions of the trap. A laser beam that has a component in the radial direction of the linear trap as well as that propagating along the trap axis has been used to detect the fluorescence spectra of the 42 S 1/2–42 P 1/2 transition. We have observed that the profile of the fluorescence spectrum obtained with the side laser beam is markedly different from that obtained with the axial laser beam due to micromotion. By applying additional DC voltages, the micromotion has been compensated, its amplitude has been estimated, and crystallization has been observed for two 40 Ca+ and four 40 Ca+ ions.

Determination of quantum defect for the Rydberg P series of Ca II

Arezoo Mokhberi, Jonas Vogel, Justas Andrijauskas +3 more

Abstract We present an experimental investigation of the Rydberg 23P 1/2 state of single, laser-cooled 40 Ca + ions in a radiofrequency ion trap. Using micromotion sideband spectroscopy on a narrow quadrupole transition, the oscillating electric field at the ion position was precisely characterised, and the modulation of the Rydberg transition due to this field was minimised. From a correlated fit to this P line and previously measured P and F level energies of Ca II, we have determined the ionization energy of 95 751.916(32) cm −1 , in agreement with the accepted value, and the quantum defect for the n P 1/2 states.
