Abstract

to Gutzwiller’s trace formula for systems with a smooth potential were presented. Here we present an extension of that theory to systems with discrete symmetries. We apply the method to the two-dimensional hydrogen atom in a uniform magnetic field and exploit the C4v-symmetry in the calculation of the correction terms. The numerical results for the semiclassical values are compared with values extracted from exact quantum mechanical calculations. The comparison shows a very good agreement. PACS numbers: 03.65.Sq, 05.45.Mt Keywords: semiclassical theories, Gutzwiller’s trace formula, expansions, discrete symmetries, diamagnetic hydrogen atom 1.

Signatures of classical periodic orbits on a smooth quantum system

Daniel Provost

Gutzwiller's trace formula and Bogomolny's formula are applied to a nospecific, nonscalable Hamiltonian system, a two-dimensional anharmonic oscillator. These semiclassical theories reproduce well the exact quantal results over a large spatial and energy range.

Semiclassical path-integral quantization of nonintegrable Hamiltonian systems

D. Wintgen

The periodic-orbit quantization approach of Gutzwiller, which is a semiclassical approximation of Feynman's path-integral formalism, is used to calculate finite-resolution densities of states for a Hamiltonian system whose classical motion is dominated by chaos, viz., the hydrogen atom in a uniform magnetic field. In spectral regions where the resolution obtained is larger than the mean level spacing, it is possible to extract approximate eigenvalues of the quantized system. The particular role of stable periodic orbits and their direct quantization are elaborated. Remarkable agreement with exact quantum calculations results.

Semiclassical methods for multi-dimensional systems bounded by finite potentials

Wenmin Huang, Cheng-Hung Chang, Chung‐Yu Mou

This work studies the semiclassical methods in multi-dimensional quantum systems bounded by finite potentials. By replacing the Maslov index by the scattering phase, the modified transfer operator method gives rather accurate corrections to the quantum energies of the circular and square potential pots of finite heights. The result justifies the proposed scattering phase correction which paves the way for correcting other semiclassical methods based on Green functions, like Gutzwiller trace formula, dynamical zeta functions, and Landauer-Büttiker formula.

ħ expansion for the periodic-orbit quantization of hyperbolic systems

Pierre Gaspard, Daniel Alonso

Using Feynman path integrals and the stationary-phase method, we develop a semiclassical theory for quantum trace formulas in classically hyperbolic systems. In this way, we obtain corrections to the Gutzwiller-Selberg trace formula as an asymptotic series in powers of the Planck constant. The first coefficient of this series is given explicitly. We illustrate the theory with the calculation of complex-wave-number resonances for the two-disk scatterer and show that effects beyond the Gutzwiller leading approximation are at the origin of a lengthening of the resonance lifetimes at low energy.

Scattering Phase Correction for Semiclassical Quantization Rules in Multi-Dimensional Quantum Systems

Huang Wen-Min, Chung‐Yu Mou, Cheng-Hung Chang

While the scattering phase for several one-dimensional potentials can be exactly derived, less is known in multi-dimensional quantum systems. This work provides a method to extend the one-dimensional phase knowledge to multi-dimensional quantization rules. The extension is illustrated in the example of Bogomolny's transfer operator method applied in two quantum wells bounded by step potentials of different heights. This generalized semiclassical method accurately determines the energy spectrum of the systems, which indicates the substantial role of the proposed phase correction. Theoretically, the result can be extended to other semiclassical methods, such as Gutzwiller trace formula, dynamical zeta functions, and semiclassical Landauer–Büttiker formula. In practice, this recipe enhances the applicability of semiclassical methods to multi-dimensional quantum systems bounded by general soft potentials.
