Signatures of Spinon Dynamics and Phase Structure of Dipolar-Octupolar Quantum Spin Ices in Two-Dimensional Coherent Spectroscopy

Mark Potts, Roderich Moessner, Owen Benton

We study how sharp signatures of fractionalization emerge in nonlinear spectroscopy experiments on spin liquids with separated energy scales. Our model is that of dipolar-octupolar rare earth pyrochlore materials, prime candidates for realizing quantum spin ice. This family of three-dimensional quantum spin liquids exhibits fractionalization of spin degrees of freedom into spinons charged under an emergent U(1) gauge field. We show that the technique of two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy can identify clear signatures of fractionalized spinon dynamics in dipolar-octupolar quantum spin ices. However, at intermediate temperatures, spinon dynamics are heavily constrained in the presence of an incoherent spin background, leading to a broad two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy response. At lower temperatures, a sharp signal emerges as the system enters a coherent spin liquid state. This lower temperature signal can in turn distinguish between zero-flux and π-flux forms of quantum spin ice.

Dynamical Signatures of Floquet Topology in Wave Packet Dynamics

Xin Shen, Bing Lu, Yan-Qing Zhu

Periodically driven quantum systems, known as Floquet systems, provide a versatile platform for engineering novel topological phases absent in static settings. However, dynamically characterizing these non-equilibrium topological invariants remains a challenge. Here, we develop a Floquet perturbation theory in the extended Hilbert space to analytically describe the center-of-mass (CoM) dynamics of a wave packet. When applied to the driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, our theory reveals that the CoM exhibits multi-frequency Zitterbewegung oscillations, whose spectral composition and phase are directly tied to the system's Floquet band structure. Crucially, we find that band inversions at topological phase transitions imprint distinct signatures in the CoM dynamics, including the emergence of low-frequency modes and phase shifts of the oscillatory trajectory. These dynamical signatures offer a practical protocol for detecting Floquet topological invariants, which we demonstrate for both high-frequency and strongly driven regimes. Our work establishes CoM dynamics as a simple and experimentally accessible probe for exploring topological phase transitions in Floquet systems.

Dynamics of the Dicke model close to the classical limit

L. Bakemeier, Andreas Alvermann, Holger Fehske

We study the dynamical properties of the Dicke model for increasing spin length, as the system approaches the limit of a classical spin. First, we describe the emergence of collective excitations above the ground state that converge to the coupled spin-oscillator oscillations found in the classical limit. The corresponding Green functions reveal quantum dynamical signatures close to the superradiant quantum phase transition. Second, we identify signatures of classical quasiperiodic orbits in the quantum time evolution using numerical time propagation of the wave function. The resulting phase-space plots are compared to the classical trajectories. We complete our study with the analysis of individual eigenstates close to the quasiperiodic orbits.

From Classical Stochastic to Monitored Quantum Dynamics: Dynamical Phase Coexistence in East Circuit Models

Marcel Cech, Johan du Buisson, Cecilia De Fazio +2 more

Kinetically constrained models have been widely studied in the context of glass formers and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Although their simple local rules often result in structureless static properties, their dynamics exhibit intricate emergent phenomena. In this work, we investigate monitored quantum circuit models that interpolate between classical stochastic and unitary quantum dynamics. For any finite measurement strength, the measurement records provide an experimentally accessible probe of the emergence of dynamical phases. By interpreting space-time resolved records as microstates of a fictitious 1+1D spin system, we employ thermodynamic concepts that allow us to investigate the dynamical coexistence between an active and inactive phase. We combine insights from classical stochastic dynamics and numerical simulations of monitored quantum dynamics to investigate different signatures of this dynamical phase coexistence as the measurement strength is varied. Our results shed light on the persistence of dynamical phase coexistence in the quantum regime, offering insights into future experimental studies of complex many-body dynamics in quantum simulators.
