Abstract

This paper investigates the application of quantum annealing to the combinatorial optimization problem inherent in neural network training, specifically focusing on hyperparameter tuning. Traditional methods for hyperparameter optimization, such as grid search and random search, can be computationally expensive and often fail to efficiently explore the vast hyperparameter space. We propose a novel approach that maps the hyperparameter optimization task onto a quantum annealing landscape. The quantum annealer, leveraging quantum tunneling, is then utilized to navigate this landscape and identify optimal hyperparameter values. This approach aims to accelerate the training process and enhance the performance of neural networks. The core concept involves formulating the hyperparameter tuning problem as an Ising model, which can be directly implemented on quantum annealing hardware. We explore the theoretical underpinnings of this mapping and discuss the potential advantages and limitations of this method. The results, although not based on experimental validation due to the nature of the research, demonstrate a promising trajectory for integrating quantum computing with machine learning. Further research and development are required to fully realize the potential of this approach.

Hyperparameter Optimization via Evolutionary Quantum Annealing

Jincheng Zhang

This paper proposes a novel approach to hyperparameter optimization for deep learning models, termed Evolutionary Quantum Annealing (EQA). Traditional hyperparameter optimization techniques, such as grid search and Bayesian optimization, often suffer from significant computational costs, particularly when dealing with complex model architectures and large hyperparameter spaces. EQA addresses this limitation by integrating the strengths of quantum annealing and evolutionary algorithms. Specifically, the algorithm utilizes quantum tunneling to efficiently explore the hyperparameter landscape, mitigating the problem of getting trapped in local optima that commonly plagues classical evolutionary methods. The core of EQA involves encoding the hyperparameter optimization problem as a quantum Ising model, followed by a simulated annealing process driven by an evolutionary algorithm. The evolutionary algorithm guides the quantum annealing process, refining the solution space and accelerating convergence. We demonstrate the efficacy of EQA through a theoretical analysis and outline its potential advantages over conventional methods. The key contribution lies in the synergistic combination of these two powerful optimization paradigms, offering a potentially faster and more robust solution for hyperparameter tuning in deep learning.
