Null Proper Time, Photon-State Information, and Relational Time A Rigorous Separation of Lorentzian Geometry, Quantum Channels, and Atemporal Interpretation
The statement that a null worldline carries zero proper time is often converted into stronger claims: that a photon has a timeless perspective, that it stores information eternally, or that photon kinematics supplies a model for the emergence of time. These inferences do not follow. This article develops a typed mathematical architecture that separates four structures: null Lorentzian geometry, the positive-energy one-photon sector, operational quantum information, and material detection. Null proper time is proved as a geometric property of null curves, while the nonexistence of a photon rest frame excludes a literal photon-frame interpretation. On the one-photon Hilbert space, real multiplication observables are self-adjoint on their maximal domains, but no universal self-adjoint operator can represent entropy or information for all states. Ideal unitary propagation preserves trace distance and Holevo information. General completely positive trace-preserving channels contract operational distinguishability, and a flagged erasure model yields exact linear loss of both trace distance and Holevo information with detector efficiency. A retinal instrument is used as a concrete measurement model, without identifying photodetection with consciousness. Finally, a Page–Wootters-type relational-time construction is stated independently of photon nullity. The resulting no-conflation result is foundational: zero proper time, information preservation, detector transduction, and relational time are mathematically non-equivalent and require distinct assumptions.

This paper argues that amplitude calculus is not an auxiliary quantum construction but the relational coordinate framework forced into existence when the Lorentzian chart collapses at the null boundary. Within the causal domain accessible to a massive probe, the coordinates (x,t) retain clear geometric meaning: worldlines exist, proper time accumulates, and classical trajectories are well defined. At the null boundary these structures fail simultaneously. The invariant interval vanishes, the Lorentzian chart reaches its degenerate limit, and no geometric observable survives. Beyond this boundary the analytic continuation of (x,t) is not spacetime but the diagrammatic overreach of a coordinate system that has exhausted its operational content. Three structural consequences follow. First, null propagation carries no proper time: the boundary is a zero--interval relation, not a limit of motion. Second, the null boundary is not a worldline and admits no geometric in--between. Third, once (x,t) loses operational meaning, only a relational description is possible. In this regime Feynman's amplitude assignments are not postulates but the unique Lorentz--invariant extension assigning complex weights to admissible relational configurations whose coherent aggregate replaces the classical trajectory. Quantum mechanics is thus the relational mathematics demanded by Lorentzian geometry once its coordinates collapse. The non--spacetime domain is not an extension of spacetime but the region where geometry terminates and amplitude begins. This is version 1.1: This version corrects minor structural issues and removes an obsolete appendix; no scientific conclusions are changed. Authors' note (October 2026). This paper is preserved as an exploratory precursor to our later research, not as a validated derivation of quantum mechanics. Several central geometric claims are incorrect: a null interval does not collapse spacetime coordinates to (0,0) or make the Lorentzian metric degenerate, and spacelike-separated events remain part of ordinary spacetime, not a non-spacetime exterior. The further claim that quantum amplitude calculus and complex amplitudes are uniquely forced by null geometry is not established. In particular, the proposed weight e^(−mℓ/ℏ) is a positive real exponential that does not supply the oscillatory relative phases needed for the claimed interference construction; for massless particles (m = 0), this weight is identically one. The original manuscript is retained unchanged as a historical record of the questions that motivated our subsequent investigations. Our later paper, The Lorentz-Analytic Exterior: A Conditional Mathematical Framework (Version 2, October 2026), revisits the geometric and analytic questions under explicit mathematical assumptions, without relying on the coordinate-collapse argument. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23400176
This paper presents a minimal and explicit structural statement of the Timeless Light Model (TLM). It introduces no new physical theory, equations, or empirical claims. Instead, it consolidates results established across a sequence of recent constraint-based and interpretive works into an irreducible canonical form. The aim is clarification and compression. Well-established relativistic invariants—most notably null proper time for massless excitations and the absence of a rest frame for photons—impose strict limits on how persistence, intermediate dynamics, and temporal ordering may be interpreted. When these consequences are developed across multiple papers, explanatory devices introduced for pedagogical purposes can be mistaken for foundational commitments. This work separates what is structurally required by relativistic kinematics from what was introduced as explanatory scaffolding. The resulting canon consists of three elements: the Quantum Platform (QP), in which no temporal variables or ordering predicates appear; the Spacetime Deployment Frame (SDF), in which all temporal structure and physical sequence are defined; and CI-ARCs (Causal Instruction Arcs), which represent emission–absorption linkages without intrinsic ordering, persistence, or intermediate evolution. Several immediate consequences follow directly, including the localization of temporal ordering to the SDF and the inapplicability of retrocausality language at the level of CI-ARCs. The paper is conservative in scope. It modifies no equations, introduces no new observables, and remains fully compatible with Special Relativity, General Relativity, and quantum field theory as an operational formalism. Its contribution is interpretive: to provide a stable, minimal reference statement of the Timeless Light Model suitable for citation and use as a foundational baseline in subsequent work.
This paper presents the Timeless Light Model (TLM) as a minimal interpretive completion of standard relativistic constraints on massless excitations. Building on the kinematic result that photons admit no inertial rest frame and experience no proper-time evolution along null propagation, the paper examines how photon language can be used consistently once these constraints are taken seriously. The work makes no dynamical proposals and introduces no new physical structure. Instead, it addresses a persistent mismatch between common informal descriptions of photons as persisting spacetime objects and the resources actually provided by special relativity, general relativity, and quantum field theory. The Timeless Light Model articulates an explicit interpretive discipline in which “photon” language is treated as shorthand for null-mediated correlations between localized interaction events (emission and absorption), rather than as the name of a persisting object with a rest-frame-based internal history. The paper is deliberately conservative and empirically neutral. It does not claim unique correctness, nor does it compete with existing formalisms or interpretations. Its contribution is pedagogical and conceptual: to make explicit a constraint on informal interpretation that is already implicit in relativistic kinematics and field-theoretic practice, thereby reducing a common category error in discussions of photon persistence. This work serves as a companion to No Rest Frame, No Persistence: A Kinematic Constraint on Photon Interpretation, which establishes the underlying no-go result.
This note explores what the null interval does and does not imply for single-photon events. The proper time and proper length between a photon’s emission and detection both vanish, but these are one geometric fact, not two. A null interval does not remove the events along the worldline; it removes the proper-time parameter along which a massive system evolves. Motivated by this, and by the standard amplitude rules of quantum mechanics, the note proposes a Photon Draw Principle: each single-photon detection can be described as a draw from a fixed amplitude distribution set by the preparation and the experimental context, with no trajectory needed for the prediction. This is an interpretive proposal, not a consequence derived from relativity. Massive particles show the same interference, and describing an outcome as a draw does not explain why that outcome occurs. Version 2.1 (October 2026). Revises version 2.0, which presented its central statement as a theorem forced by relativity. That framing is withdrawn. The statement is now a Photon Draw Principle within an interpretation, resting on the standard amplitude rules plus one explicitly interpretive assumption (Axiom 4). Other corrections: amplitude addition applies to indistinguishable alternatives, and the claims about gravity and about a link between general relativity and quantum mechanics are removed.
Can spatial distance and proper time be defined operationally — by how a system leaks information to its environment — rather than postulated as primitive geometric quantities? This paper answers affirmatively for both, within Markovian open quantum dynamics, building on the survival-expansion framework of the companion paper "Local Curvature of Quantum Information" (doi:10.5281/zenodo.18792424). Spatial distance is defined as the excess irreversibility generated by superposing two states: when a system is superposed over two locations, the environment learns which at a rate growing with their separation. This distance is proven to be a genuine metric — it satisfies the triangle inequality via an isometric embedding into environmental "shadow space", recovers the Euclidean metric of R³ for independent position channels, and becomes undefined before decoherence even for orthogonal states, so that geometry and classicality emerge together. Proper time is defined as elapsed background time minus the minimal dissipation needed to traverse a worldline. The reversed triangle inequality of relativity (the twin paradox) then follows automatically from the subadditivity of optimal costs, and the exact Minkowski interval corresponds to a dissipation rate that saturates at high transport velocity: the light cone as a bound on irreversibility production. Both Lorentzian signatures are traced to a single convex-analytic root: spatial distance is directly a subadditive object (a norm), while proper time is an additive duration minus a subadditive optimal cost, hence superadditive. In an exactly solvable driven damped-oscillator model, the information deficit coincides identically with Clausius entropy production, the minimal transport deficit obeys Λ∗=2kBTbγmTΔx2, and the emergent light speed is c2=γmκkBTb=κD, with D the Einstein diffusion coefficient. The universality of the emergent light cone is shown to be equivalent to a Compton-clock scaling of the dissipation–time conversion rate (κ=ℏ2mc2), with the quantum–classical crossover condition kBTb=2ℏγ arising as an internal consistency requirement rather than a postulate. A junction-cost theorem establishes that velocity discontinuities incur strictly positive excess dissipation, so the turning twin ages strictly less even at equal speeds. All results are verified numerically on lattice decoherence models, exact linear–quadratic optimal control, and Fock-space computations; the verification scripts accompany the manuscript. Locality of the environmental couplings is assumed, not derived, and the construction has analog-gravity status: a Lorentzian interval in a preferred frame defined by the bath.
