Post-Quantum Security for Blockchain and Healthcare Data Management: A Review

Özgür Karaduman, Zeynep Buse Gürbüz, Muharrem Tuncay Gençoğlu +1 more

The rapid advancement of quantum computing poses a significant threat to classical cryptographic methods used in blockchain-based healthcare systems. Existing security mechanisms such as RSA and ECC are vulnerable to quantum attacks, posing a risk to patient data integrity, confidentiality, and authentication mechanisms. To address this challenge, postquantum cryptographic (PQC) solutions, including lattice-based, hash-based, code-based, and multivariate polynomial-based techniques, have been proposed. This study systematically reviews and classifies PQC methods and their integration into blockchainbased healthcare infrastructures. A three-layer security model is discussed to enhance blockchain resilience against quantum attacks. The study further explores on-chain, off-chain, and crosschain security mechanisms within healthcare applications to ensure secure medical data storage, patient identity management, and interoperability among healthcare providers. The findings suggest that hybrid cryptographic models, combining classical and post-quantum techniques, provide a practical transition strategy for ensuring long-term security in blockchain networks. This research contributes to the field by offering a structured classification of quantum-resistant blockchain security mechanisms and providing insights into future research directions, particularly in the areas of quantum-safe healthcare data management, performance optimization of PQC methods, and the development of quantum-resistant smart contracts.

Semi-quantum blockchain

Ang Liu, Qifan Zhang, Sun Ying +1 more

Abstract To counter the threats posed by quantum computing attacks on blockchain systems, researchers have explored both post-quantum blockchain and quantum blockchain solutions. However, post-quantum blockchain typically relies on complex mathematical puzzles, which result in high computational complexity and, consequently, low operational efficiency. Conversely, quantum blockchain is entirely dependent on the quantum processing capabilities of its nodes, leading to significant consumption of quantum resources, high networking costs, and reduced practicality. To address these challenges, a blockchain framework based on a semi-quantum key distribution network, referred to as Semi-Quantum Blockchain (SQB), is proposed. SQB enables classical users to engage in transactions while ensuring the unconditional security provided by quantum cryptography, significantly reducing the costs associated with network formation. The security analysis demonstrates that SQB provides robust post-quantum security and significantly outperforms its peers in terms of quantum resource consumption and quantum communication efficiency, establishing it as a secure and efficient blockchain solution.

A Survey on Exotic Signatures for Post-quantum Blockchain: Challenges and Research Directions

Maxime Buser, Rafael Dowsley, Muhammed F. Esgin +9 more

Blockchain technology provides efficient and secure solutions to various online activities by utilizing a wide range of cryptographic tools. In this article, we survey the existing literature on post-quantum secure digital signatures that possess exotic advanced features and that are crucial cryptographic tools used in the blockchain ecosystem for (1) account management, (2) consensus efficiency, (3) empowering scriptless blockchain, and (4) privacy. The exotic signatures that we particularly focus on in this work are the following: multi-/aggregate, threshold, adaptor, blind, and ring signatures. Herein the term ”exotic” refers to signatures with properties that are not just beyond the norm for signatures, e.g., unforgeability, but also imbue new forms of functionalities. Our treatment of such exotic signatures includes discussions on existing challenges and future research directions in the post-quantum space. We hope that this article will help to foster further research to make post-quantum cryptography more accessible so that blockchain systems can be made ready in advance of the approaching quantum threats.
