A chiral SU(3) network model on the honeycomb lattice: an analytical construction of emergent SU(3)1 topological order

Abstract

In this analytical mean-field study we construct and analyze a chiral SU(3) spin model on the bi- partite honeycomb lattice. Assigning the fundamental and antifundamental representations of SU(3) to the two sublattices, as required to form a singlet on every bond, together with the choice N = 3, fixes the on-site degree of freedom to a qutrit and the two-site coupling to the SU(3) Heisenberg exchange. By a standard representation-theoretic argument, the single-site reduced entropy equals ln 3 exactly in any finite-size singlet ground state. We show that the natural make-before-break ring exchange around a hexagonal plaquette must advance the site states by two positions to respect the alternation of conjugate representations, and that its time-reversal-odd part decomposes exactly into SU(3) scalar chiralities on the two sublattice triangles of the hexagon, leaving a one-parameter model. A fermionic parton mean-field analysis, with a single U(1) gauge constraint, places the parton bands at the Heisenberg point in a topologically trivial gapped state and shows, through an explicit Wick decoupling of the six-site ring exchange, that the chiral term generates a competing Haldane flux; enforcing the constraint self-consistently, the gap inverts beyond a finite coupling into a phase in which each of the three color bands carries unit Chern number. Integrating out the partons yields an SU(3)1 chiral spin liquid. The candidate phase carries total quantum dimension√3, three anyon sectors with Z3 fusion, chiral central charge two, and topological entanglement entropy ln √3. We present the exact operator identities as an algebraic foundation, and the SU(3)1 identification as a mean-field prediction, for future high-performance tensor-network investigations, which we identify as the necessary test of the proposed phase.

Phase diagram of the chiral SU(3) antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice

Yi Xu, Sylvain Capponi, Ji-Yao Chen +6 more

Motivated by the search for chiral spin liquids (CSL), we consider a simple model defined on the kagome lattice of interacting SU(3) spins (in the fundamental representation) including two-site and three-site permutations between nearest neighbor sites and on triangles, respectively. By combining analytical methods and various numerical techniques, namely, exact Lanczos diagonalizations and tensor network variational approaches, we find a rich phase diagram with short-range entangled (i.e., nontopological) and topological (possibly chiral) gapped spin liquids (SLs). Short-range entangled spin liquids include an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT)-like phase---argued to be a Symmetry-Protected Topological (SPT) phase---and a trimerized phase breaking the inversion center between the up and down triangles of the kagome lattice. A topological SL is stabilized in a restricted part of the phase diagram by the time-reversal symmetry breaking (complex) three-site permutation term. Analyzing the chiral edge modes of this topological SL on long cylinders or on finite disks, we have come up with two competing scenarios, either a CSL or a double Chern-Simons SL characterized by a single or by two counter-propagating Wess-Zumino-Witten $\mathrm{SU}{(3)}_{1}$ chiral mode(s), respectively. In the vicinity of the extended ferromagnetic region, we have found a magnetic phase corresponding either to a modulated canted ferromagnet or to a uniform partially magnetized ferromagnet.

Possible uniform-flux chiral spin liquid states in the SU(3) ring-exchange model on the triangular lattice

Hsin-Hua Lai

We consider a SU(3) model with antiferromagnetic three-site ring exchanges, in addition to two-site exchanges, on the triangular lattice. We first present numerical site-factorized state studies on the magnetic ordered states, which show two different three-sublattice-ordered states---the antiferroquadrupolar phase and the standard ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ antiferromagnetic phase---along the axis of the strength of the three-site ring exchanges. We further study the model using slave-fermion mean field approaches in which we rewrite the exchange operators in terms of three flavors of fermions. At the mean-field level, we find that the main competing trial states are the trimer state (triangular plaquette state), gapped uniform $\ensuremath{\pi}/3$-flux chiral spin liquid, and gapped uniform $2\ensuremath{\pi}/3$-flux chiral spin liquid. The filled band of the $\ensuremath{\pi}/3$-flux chiral spin liquid has Chern number $+1$, and that of the $2\ensuremath{\pi}/3$-flux chiral spin liquid has Chern number $+2$. We also give the effective Chern-Simons theory for each chiral spin liquid at the mean-field level.

Chiral Quantum Spin Liquids on Frustrated Lattices: Analytical Theory and Exact Constraints

Khamis Obaidelah

We present a comprehensive analytical theory of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) on the kagome lattice with Heisenberg exchange J1, next-nearest-neighbor exchange J2, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction D, and scalar spin chirality interaction λ. The work contains three principal contributions. First, we derive new mean-field analytic relations connecting the chiral interaction λ to the spinon gap, low-temperature thermodynamics, and thermal Hall response, with explicit spin-S dependence and generalization across kagome, triangular, and honeycomb lattices. The central result is Δspinon ∝ S³λ/J12 with lattice-dependent prefactors derived from self-consistent mean-field equations. Second, we derive a controlled effective model by projecting the kagome Hamiltonian onto the triangle-doublet subspace, obtaining an effective spin-chirality model on the triangular lattice with complex-valued interactions arising from the C3 symmetry of the chirality eigenstates. We compute all matrix elements of the effective spin operator in the chirality basis and characterize the inter-chirality coupling mediated by shared lattice sites. Third, we provide a rigorous map of obstructions to exact analytical solutions, systematically examining eight classes of proof techniques and identifying the precise mathematical reason each fails for the kagome Hamiltonian. The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem provides the single rigorous exact result: any gapped ground state on the kagome lattice with spin-1/2 per site must exhibit topological order. All other results are classified by derivation category with explicit uncertainty quantification. Extended symmetric quantum phase in a honeycomb Heisenberg model with sublattice-selective interactions

Nai Chao Hu, Xing-Yu Zhang, Yuchi He +1 more

Motivated by two-dimensional bilayer systems we numerically study an anti-ferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with a nearest-neighbour exchange coupling $J_1$, and a next-nearest-neighbour exchange coupling $J_2'$ for the B sublattice sites only. Using infinite Projected Entangled-Pair States (iPEPS), variational uniform matrix-product states on cylinders, and exact diagonalization, we find an extended symmetric regime $0.4\lesssim J'_2/J_1\lesssim0.6$, in which local observables show no magnetic, valence-bond, or chiral spin order. At $J'_2/J_1=0.5$, the PEPS correlation length grows systematically with bond dimension, and an inverse-correlation-length extrapolation favors a vanishing limit. We also find that various observables scale algebraically with the finite bond-dimension-induced correlation length, which points to a gapless spin liquid ground state. We propose a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Dirac spin liquid parton state, with Dirac points that are protected by translation, time-reversal and three-fold rotation symmetry, as a promising candidate state to explain the numerical results. We also discuss the possibility that the symmetric ground state is a featureless, short-range entangled state with a small gap.

Plaquette order in the SU(6) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice

Pierre Nataf, Miklós Lajkó, Philippe Corboz +3 more

We revisit the SU(6) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice, which has been predicted to be a chiral spin liquid by mean-field theory [G. Szirmai et al., Phys. Rev. A 84, 011611(R) (2011)]. Using exact diagonalizations of finite clusters, infinite projected entangled pair state simulations, and variational Monte Carlo simulations based on Gutzwiller projected wave functions, we provide strong evidence that the model with one particle per site and nearest-neighbor exchange actually develops plaquette order. This is further confirmed by the investigation of the model with a ring-exchange term, which shows that there is a transition between the plaquette state and the chiral state at a finite value of the ring-exchange term.

Schwinger-boson mean-field study of the spin- 1/2 J1−J2−Jχ model in the honeycomb lattice: Thermal Hall signature

Rohit Mukherjee, Ritajit Kundu, Avinash Singh +1 more

We theoretically investigate, within Schwinger-boson mean-field theory, the transition from a gapped ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ quantum spin liquid, in a ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ system in a honeycomb lattice, to a chiral ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin-liquid phase under the presence of time-reversal symmetry-breaking scalar chiral interaction (with amplitude ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$). We numerically obtain a phase diagram of this ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$ system, where different ground states are distinguished based on the gap and the nature of excitation spectrum, topological invariant of the excitations, the nature of spin-spin correlation, and the symmetries of the mean-field parameters. The chiral ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ state is characterized by the nontrivial Chern number of the excitation bands and lack of long-range magnetic order, which leads to a large thermal Hall coefficient.
