Creation of Ultracold Heteronuclear p -Wave Feshbach Molecules

Abstract

We report the first creation of a bulk sample of ultracold heteronuclear p-wave Feshbach molecules in an optically trapped Bose-Bose mixture of ^{23}Na and ^{87}Rb atoms. Using loss spectroscopy and binding energy measurements, we systematically characterize the interspecies p-wave Feshbach resonances near 284 G. Leveraging this understanding, we use magnetoassociation to form p-wave NaRb Feshbach molecules, producing both pure samples and mixtures of molecules in different p-wave orbitals. We further measure the molecular lifetime and identify atom-molecule and molecule-molecule collisions as the dominant loss mechanisms. This Letter establishes a previously unavailable ultracold molecule platform that combines orbital anisotropy with heteronuclear constituents, represents a significant step toward realizing tunable p-wave interactions in Bose-Bose mixtures, and provides a foundation for exploring nonzero angular momentum molecules.

Observation of Feshbach resonances between ultracold Na and Rb atoms

Fudong Wang, Dezhi Xiong, Xiaoke Li +2 more

We have successfully prepared an optically trapped ultracold mixture of ${}^{23}$Na and ${}^{87}$Rb atoms and studied their interspecies Feshbach resonances. Using two different spin combinations, several $s$- and $p$-wave resonances are identified by observing high inelastic losses and temperature increases for both species near resonant magnetic field values. The two $s$-wave resonances observed below 500 G between atoms in their lowest-energy levels are possible candidates for Feshbach molecule association. Our results are well characterized by a coupled-channel model which also refines the ground-state interaction potentials between ${}^{23}$Na and ${}^{87}$Rb. This work opens up the prospect for preparing ultracold ensembles of ground-state bosonic NaRb molecules which are chemically stable and can provide strong dipolar interactions.

Formation of ultracold NaRb Feshbach molecules

Fudong Wang, Xiaodong He, Xiaoke Li +3 more

We report the creation of ultracold bosonic 23 Na 87 Rb Feshbach molecules via magneto-association. By ramping the magnetic field across an interspecies Feshbach resonance (FR), at least 4000 molecules can be produced out of the near degenerate ultracold mixture. Fast loss due to inelastic atom–molecule collisions is observed, which limits the pure molecule number, after residual atoms removal, to 1700. The pure molecule sample can live for 21.8(8) ms in the optical trap, long enough for future molecular spectroscopy studies toward coherently transferring to the singlet ro-vibrational ground state, where these molecules are stable against chemical reaction and have a permanent electric dipole moment of 3.3 Debye. We have also measured the Feshbach molecule's binding energy near the FR by the oscillating magnetic field method and found these molecules have a large closed-channel fraction.

Creation of ultracold RbCs molecules

Michael P. Köppinger

This thesis reports the investigation of the scattering properties of a mixture of Rb and Cs and the formation of ultracold Feshbach molecules. The production of Feshbach molecules is a crucial step towards the production of ultracold polar molecules, which is of significant interest for a wide range of potential applications. We have investigated the scattering properties of a mixture of $^{85}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs in their lowest spin channel in a magnetic field range from 0 to 700\,G. Furthermore, we explored the Feshbach spectrum of $^{85}$Rb alone in both, the $(f=2,m_f=-2)$ and $(2,+2)$ states up to a magnetic field of 1000\,G. Additionally a Feshbach resonance in a $(2,+2)+(3,+3)$ spin mixture was experimentally confirmed. We associated Cs$_2$ Feshbach molecules using a Feshbach resonance at 19.9\,G. \mbox{$2.1(1) \times 10^4$} molecules with a temperature of $\sim60$\,nK were produced from a sample of $3.28(2) \times 10^5$ Cs atoms with a PSD of 0.20(1). Due to a magnetic field gradient, the molecules `bounce' at an avoided crossing between two states at 13.5\,G. This gradient field was also used to produce multiple molecular clouds from one atomic sample. A combination of both techniques led to a `collision' between two Cs$_2$ clouds. Furthermore, we associated up to $\sim5000$ heteronuclear $^{87}$RbCs Feshbach molecules using an interspecies resonance at 197.1\,G. Confined in the dipole trap the molecules have a lifetime of 0.21(1)\,s. We have measured the magnetic moment of the molecules in different internal states in a magnetic field range from 181 to 185\,G. Molecular loss spectroscopy on electronically excited states was performed to identify candidates for the intermediate state of a STIRAP transfer of the molecules into their rovibrational ground state. Subsequently, the binding energy of the rovibrational ground state was measured to be 3811.574(1)\,cm$^{-1}$, using two-photon spectroscopy.

Ultracold Heteronuclear Molecules in a 3D Optical Lattice

C. Ospelkaus, Silke Ospelkaus, Leif Humbert +3 more

We report on the creation of ultracold heteronuclear molecules assembled from fermionic 40K and bosonic 87Rb atoms in a 3D optical lattice. Molecules are produced at a heteronuclear Feshbach resonance on both the attractive and the repulsive sides of the resonance. We precisely determine the binding energy of the heteronuclear molecules from rf spectroscopy across the Feshbach resonance. We characterize the lifetime of the molecular sample as a function of magnetic field and measure lifetimes between 20 and 120 ms. The efficiency of molecule creation via rf association is measured and is found to decrease as expected for more deeply bound molecules.

Observation of Heteronuclear Feshbach Molecules from a Rb85–Rb87 Gas

Scott B. Papp, Carl Wieman

We report on the observation of ultracold heteronuclear Feshbach molecules. Starting with a $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ Bose-Einstein condensate and a cold atomic gas of $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$, we utilize previously unobserved interspecies Feshbach resonances to create up to 25 000 molecules. Even though the $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ gas is nondegenerate, we observe a large molecular conversion efficiency due to the presence of a quantum degenerate $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ gas; this represents a key feature of our system. We compare the molecule creation at two different Feshbach resonances with different magnetic-field widths. The two Feshbach resonances are located at $265.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15\text{ }\mathrm{G}$ and $372.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{G}$. We also directly measure the small binding energy of the molecules through resonant magnetic-field association.
