Post-quantum cryptography and security models for unmanned aerial vehicles communications

SIMAR SINGH RAYAT, Chandradeep Bhatt, Vikrant Sharma +1 more

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have gone from single platforms that were remotely piloted to fully networked, autonomous cyber-physical systems that operate in the civilian, industrial and defense arenas. Their increasing reliance on wireless communication for command and control, cooperative sensing, distributed decision-making and swarm coordination has raised the level of communication security to the point where it has become a mission-critical requirement. Contemporary UAV security architectures are much based on classical public-key–based cryptography (RSA and elliptic are the most well-known) whose security assumptions become fundamentally vulnerable against the presence of large-scale quantum computing. This chapter gives a comprehensive and future-oriented discussion about post-quantum cryptography (PQC)-based security models for UAVs communication and information exchange networks. Quantum resistance should be applied not only at the algorithmic level but across the whole UAV communications trust stack, which is the main argument. Part I set the conceptual and technical ground by affecting a short range of the improvement of UAV communication systems, in articulating a system quantum-era threat model and giving a motivation for mission-adaptive, cross-layer security architectures. The discussion makes the long-term confidentiality, survivability of the system and continuing operation more robust, and the security of UAV with PQC enabled is no longer speculative, but is considered a strategic requirement.

A Quantum-Resistant Authentication and Key Agreement Protocol for UAV Networks

Kaifeng Wu, Zhenhu Ning, Jiakai Dou +2 more

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network serves as the core infrastructure of the future low-altitude intelligent network, providing flexible aerial smart services for various industries through inter-UAV collaboration and ground-air connectivity. With the advancement of quantum computing, quantum algorithms pose a serious threat to UAV communication networks. Traditional authentication protocols based on classical number-theoretic problems are no longer secure against quantum attacks. To address the challenges of quantum threats and the inherent characteristics of UAVs, such as high mobility and resource constraints, this paper proposes a quantum resistant authentication and key agreement protocol for UAV networks. The comprehensive informal security analysis demonstrates the robustness of the protocol against various attacks, particularly attacks based on quantum computing. Furthermore, the authentication component of the protocol adopts a lightweight design, reducing computational overhead by up to 53.57%, thereby balancing security and efficiency.

23910 Building Resilient Quantum UAV Networks: Cybersecurity and AI Perspectives

R Thangamani, M. Vimaladevi, M M Ramyasri

The combination of quantum computing, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI) ushers in a new era of safe and robust UAV networks. This chapter analyzes novel approaches that use quantum computing, AI, and cybersecurity principles to address the dynamic issues of UAV networks. Key target areas include quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms, AI-driven threat detection and response systems, and UAV-specific secure communication protocols. These innovations reduce cyberrisks, protect data integrity, and increase the robustness of quantum-enabled UAV systems. The chapter illustrates enhanced threat detection, adaptive cybersecurity, and secure data transfer through the use of cutting-edge techniques, which raise operational effectiveness and mission success rates. With features including better data protection, reduced susceptibility to attacks, and AI-enhanced decision-making, resilient quantum UAV networks find applications in military, surveillance, disaster response, agriculture, and infrastructure monitoring. This chapter concludes by discussing the revolutionary potential of AI and quantum computing in UAV networks. It emphasizes the significance of proactive cybersecurity and AI-driven resilience in shaping the development of unmanned aerial systems, fostering innovation, and ensuring the safety of critical UAV operations.
