Abstract

We provide a self‑contained mathematical analysis of the quantum Zeno limit for a dissipative quantum Markov semigroup with a GKSL generator. Frequent projective measurements modelled by a projection PP lead to an effective generator GG on the invariant subspace PHPH. The generator splits into a natural GKSL part and a leakage term −12∑kγk{Dk†Dk,ρ}−21∑kγk{Dk†Dk,ρ} with Dk=P⊥LkPDk=P⊥LkP. Perfect confinement (trace preservation) holds iff P⊥LkP=0P⊥LkP=0 for all kk. Two contrasting examples are worked out: a two‑qubit system with internal relaxation and state‑dependent leakage, and a free particle with a translation jump giving spatially structured leakage. For unbounded Hamiltonians we prove an unconditional Zeno limit under the sole hypothesis that the unitary Zeno limit defines a self‑adjoint Zeno Hamiltonian (a condition known to be broadly satisfied, e.g.\ for Dirichlet obstacles), using the Exner–Ichinose strong convergence, a standard core property of derivation generators, and a Duhamel perturbation argument; this removes any additional Banach‑space core condition. The trace of the limit state decays according to the leakage term, and the limit semigroup is a strongly continuous contraction semigroup. Beyond the qualitative limit, we establish three further quantitative results. First, for bounded generators we prove an explicit O(1/n)O(1/n) Zeno convergence rate ∥Vn(t)−etG∥≤t2κ2etκ/n∥Vn(t)−etG∥≤t2κ2etκ/n, with κκ the operator norm of the GKSL generator, sharp in its order. Second, writing Γ=∑kγkDk†DkΓ=∑kγkDk†Dk for the leakage operator, we prove a two‑sided exponential sandwich e^{-\gamma_{\max}t}\tr\rho\le\tr(e^{tG}\rho)\le e^{-\gamma_{\min}t}\tr\rho governed by spec⁡(Γ)spec(Γ), together with a matching numerical‑range localization of the eigenvalues of the associated effective non‑Hermitian Hamiltonian. Third, we show that iterated confinement through a family of pairwise commuting projections is order‑independent and agrees exactly with direct confinement through their product, exhibiting P↦GPP↦GP as a meet‑homomorphism on the associated Boolean algebra of Zeno subspaces. We also present a new algebraic identity linking the leakage operator to the projected jump intensity, yielding a compact form of the confined generator and a Gram‑matrix reduction for the leakage norm. Applications to quantum error correction, quantum thermodynamics, and the emergence of Markovian dissipation as a Zeno effect on the environment are discussed. We close with a set of genuinely open problems and a cautionary de Sitter example showing the limits of a naive horizon‑leakage analogy.

Optimal Convergence Rate in the Quantum Zeno Effect for Open Quantum Systems in Infinite Dimensions

Tim Möbus, Cambyse Rouzé

Abstract In open quantum systems, the quantum Zeno effect consists in frequent applications of a given quantum operation, e.g., a measurement, used to restrict the time evolution (due, for example, to decoherence) to states that are invariant under the quantum operation. In an abstract setting, the Zeno sequence is an alternating concatenation of a contraction operator (quantum operation) and a $$C_0$$ C 0 -contraction semigroup (time evolution) on a Banach space. In this paper, we prove the optimal convergence rate $$\mathcal {O}(\tfrac{1}{n})$$ O ( 1 n ) of the Zeno sequence by proving explicit error bounds. For that, we derive a new Chernoff-type $$\sqrt{n}$$ n -Lemma, which we believe to be of independent interest. Moreover, we generalize the convergence result for the Zeno effect in two directions: We weaken the assumptions on the generator, inducing the Zeno dynamics generated by an unbounded generator, and we improve the convergence to the uniform topology. Finally, we provide a large class of examples arising from our assumptions.

Quantum Zeno Effect in Open Quantum Systems

Simon Becker, Nilanjana Datta, Robert Salzmann

Abstract We prove the quantum Zeno effect in open quantum systems whose evolution, governed by quantum dynamical semigroups, is repeatedly and frequently interrupted by the action of a quantum operation. For the case of a quantum dynamical semigroup with a bounded generator, our analysis leads to a refinement of existing results and extends them to a larger class of quantum operations. We also prove the existence of a novel strong quantum Zeno limit for quantum operations for which a certain spectral gap assumption, which all previous results relied on, is lifted. The quantum operations are instead required to satisfy a weaker property of strong power-convergence. In addition, we establish, for the first time, the existence of a quantum Zeno limit for open quantum systems in the case of unbounded generators. We also provide a variety of physically interesting examples of quantum operations to which our results apply.

On The Generators of Quantum Dynamical Semigroups

Alexander Wiedemann

In recent years, digraph induced generators of quantum dynamical semigroups have been introduced and studied, particularly in the context of unique relaxation and invariance. We define the class of pair block diagonal generators, which allows for additional interaction coefficients but preserves the main structural properties. Namely, when the basis of the underlying Hilbert space is given by the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian (for example the generic semigroups), then the action of the semigroup leaves invariant the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix spaces. In this case, we explicitly compute all invariant states of the semigroup. In order to define this class we provide a characterization of when the Gorini- Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) equation defines a proper generator when arbitrary Lindblad operators are allowed (in particular, they do not need to be trace- less as demanded by the GKSL Theorem). Moreover, we consider the converse con- struction to show that every generator naturally gives rise to a digraph, and that under certain assumptions the properties of this digraph can be exploited to gain knowledge of both the number and the structure of the invariant states of the corre- sponding semigroup. We also consider more general constructions on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space, perhaps infinite dimensional. In partic- ular, we prove that for every semigroup of Schwarz maps on such an algebra which has a subinvariant faithful normal state there exists an associated semigroup of con- tractions on the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators of the Hilbert space. Moreover, we show that if the original semigroup is weak∗ continuous then the associated semigroup is strongly continuous. We introduce the notion of the extended generator of a semigroup on the bounded operators of a Hilbert space with respect to an or- thonormal basis of the Hilbert space. We describe this form of the generator of a quantum Markov semigroup on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear op- erators on a Hilbert space which has an invariant faithful normal state under the assumption that the generator of the associated semigroup has compact resolvent, or under the assumption that the minimal unitary dilation of the associated semigroup of contractions is compact.

Energy preserving evolutions over Bosonic systems

Paul Gondolf, Tim Möbus, Cambyse Rouzé

The exponential convergence to invariant subspaces of quantum Markov semigroups plays a crucial role in quantum information theory. One such example is in bosonic error correction schemes, where dissipation is used to drive states back to the code-space – an invariant subspace protected against certain types of errors. In this paper, we investigate perturbations of quantum dynamical semigroups that operate on continuous variable (CV) systems and admit an invariant subspace. First, we prove a generation theorem for quantum Markov semigroups on CV systems under the physical assumptions that (i) the generator is in GKSL form with corresponding jump operators defined as polynomials of annihilation and creation operators; and (ii) the (possibly unbounded) generator increases all moments in a controlled manner. Additionally, we show that the level sets of operators with bounded first moments are admissible subspaces of the evolution, providing the foundations for a perturbative analysis. Our results also extend to time-dependent semigroups and multi-mode systems. We apply our general framework to two settings of interest in continuous variable quantum information processing. First, we provide a new scheme for deriving continuity bounds on the energy-constrained capacities of Markovian perturbations of quantum dynamical semigroups. Second, we provide quantitative perturbation bounds for the steady state of the quantum Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup and the invariant subspace of the photon dissipation used in bosonic error correction.

Quantum Gibbs Sampling in Infinite Dimensions: Generation, Mixing Times and Circuit Implementation

Simon Becker, Cambyse Rouzé, Robert Salzmann

We develop a rigorous and implementable framework for Gibbs sampling of infinite-dimensional quantum systems governed by unbounded Hamiltonians. Extending dissipative Gibbs samplers beyond finite dimensions raises fundamental obstacles, including ill-defined generators, the absence of spectral gaps on natural Banach spaces, and tensions between implementability and convergence guarantees. We overcome these issues by constructing KMS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on separable Hilbert spaces that are both well-posed and efficiently implementable on qubit hardware. Our generation theory is based on the abstract framework of Dirichlet forms, adapted here to the case of algebras of bounded operators over separable Hilbert spaces. Leveraging the spectral properties of our self-adjoint generators, we establish quantitative convergence results in trace distance, including regimes of fast thermalization. In contrast, we also identify Hamiltonians for which a naive choice of generators guaranteeing implementability generally comes at the cost of losing uniform exponential convergence guarantees for the associated evolutions, thereby establishing a strong trade-off between implementability and convergence. Our framework applies to a wide class of models - including Schrödinger operators, Gaussian systems, and Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonians - and provides a unified approach linking rigorous infinite-dimensional analysis with algorithmic Gibbs state preparation.

Quantitative Quantum Zeno and Strong Damping Limits in Strong Topology

Salzmann, Robert

Frequent applications of a mixing quantum operation to a quantum system slow down its time evolution and eventually drive it into the invariant subspace of the named operation. We prove this phenomenon, the quantum Zeno effect, and its continuous variant, strong damping, in a unified way for infinite-dimensional open quantum systems, while merely demanding that the respective mixing convergence holds pointwise for all states. Both results are quantitative in the following sense: Given the speed of convergence for the mixing limits, we can derive bounds on the convergence speed for the corresponding quantum Zeno and strong damping limits. We apply our results to prove quantum Zeno and strong damping limits for the photon loss channel with an explicit bound on the convergence speed.
