A realist about quantum mechanics must say what unperformed measurements would have shown, and the theorems of Bell and Kochen–Specker forbid the obvious way of saying it: a standing valuation of the unmeasured. Every possible-worlds semantics for counterfactuals evaluates at complete worlds—a valuation by another name—so the realist needs counterfactual substance without counterfactual definiteness, and this paper compresses the framework, Aethic reasoning, built to supply exactly that: evaluation by perturbation of the evaluator’s own information state, the similarity ordering deleted rather than refined—absent as a primitive, and unrecoverable at the consequence-relation level on a reading the companion derives, with the full graded verdict function’s representability posed as the open challenge. The move beneath it: determinacy is a two-place relation between an attribute and an information state, and the openness it relativizes is tense-free—an observer’s unlearned past exactly as open as their unformed future. The chain, run once: blanks are constructive and permanent, so relabeling them wholesale as ignorance forces a single sample space that Bell statistics exclude. From there, mutual exclusivity becomes stated interior content, splitting superposition into a disagreeing regime and an agreeing one—the mixed/coherent regime distinction rendered as a difference in what is written, the continuous phase structure carried by the weighting axiom and nowhere on the attribute side. An information state is valid only if no future record can force a contradiction upon it, which is the collapse law, and run over a powerset of paths it draws the quantum–classical boundary as an exact record partition—recovering, with the weighting installed, Feynman’s indistinguishability rule with a non-circular referent for in principle. Collapse is then an indexing transition; cross-observer objectivity survives—no observer can meet another who contradicts them; and one flagged weighting axiom supplies the quantitative face, Malus and eraser phenomenology included. The price is stated with the claims: the Born-form weights are posited, the bridge from formal invalidity to physical unrealizability is a stated principle rather than a theorem, and one open construction—the irretrievability trigger—is where the framework stakes its divergence from universal unitarity.

This paper develops a representation of statistical dependence on observer-indexed partial information states and determines what it recovers of causal reasoning. Three levels of result are distinguished. The first is observational. For factorized states in the regime of mutually exclusive alternatives, a correlation forces connectivity through graded couplings, separating families screen, and every screener carries the whole covariance; this is the statistical screening structure associated with Reichenbach’s common-cause principle, located in graphical sufficient conditions, factorization equivalences and covariance identities. The second is conditional on supplied structure. Given directed mechanism histories with independent mechanism weights, settling an attribute is a surgery and the interventional calculus is inherited; given functional mechanism entries, counterfactual evaluation coincides with the functional-model one. A representation theorem shows that hard invalidity together with independent auxiliary weights, constrained and renormalized, represents every exclusive-regime state; the construction is distinct from a directed mechanism history and supplies no direction. The third is a boundary. In the regime of agreeing alternatives, Bell-violating statistics admit no global noncontextual, measurement-independent valuation extending the observed table, while the observational results stand on that table. The framework’s record discipline, stated as a premise, supplies its proposed explanation of why no admissible state carries such a mediator; it adds a restriction on admissible states, not a further statistical exclusion. The construction motivates an account of causal dependence in terms of indexed coupling. Causal orientation remains additional structure that the framework supplies by convention and does not derive.
The interpretation of quantum mechanics in the context of measurements, and concepts such as state “collapse,” have troubled physicists since the inception of quantum theory. Pushed to their logical extreme, such issues become entangled (in the colloquial sense) with questions of consciousness, reality, etc. Bell’s theorem eliminated possible ways out of this tangle via any (halfway reasonable) classical underlying theory, and the success of quantum mechanics forces us to adopt it as a fundamental theory and face the logical consequences.
A realist about quantum mechanics wants two things the standard interpretations will not sell together: enough counterfactual structure to say what an unperformed experiment would have shown, and no hidden valuation for the Bell theorems to kill. This paper argues that both can be had, and that having them follows from one correction. The claim’s shape should be fixed at the outset: given four commitments stated in advance, monadic determinacy cannot be recovered without contradiction or empirical inadequacy. The commitments are not themselves forced—a reader may decline them, and §6 prices the doors that declining opens. What is forced is the consequence. Following Spekkens’s diagnosis that quantum interpretation is stalled on a category mistake, the paper identifies the entry: determinacy has been treated as a one-place property that facts have or lack, when it is a two-place relation between an attribute and an information state. Two results carry the paper. The first is a no-go: the two-place structure cannot be deflated back into determinate-but-unknown values. A deflation must place its determinate values either inside a persisting state, where they contradict that state’s own content, or outside every state, where their image is a single-sample-space model of exactly the kind the quantum statistics exclude. The second is a yield: the same correction, fixed in advance and applied with nothing added per case, dissolves the standard paradox set—delayed choice, the cat, Wigner’s friend, EPR, PBR, the proper/improper mixture—each dissolution graded, with Frauchiger–Renner marked as the contested case. The paper closes by naming the squares still blank.
How does it come about then, that great scientists such as Einstein, Schrödinger and De Broglie are nevertheless dissatisfied with the situation? Of course, all these objections are levelled not against the correctness of the formulae, but against their interpretation. […] The lesson to be learned from what I have told of the origin of quantum mechanics is that probable refinements of mathematical methods will not suffice to produce a satisfactory theory, but that somewhere in our doctrine is hidden a concept, unjustified by experience, which we must eliminate to open up the road. (Born [1954], pp. 8, 11) It is truly surprising how little difference all this makes. Most physicists use quantum mechanics every day in their working lives without needing to worry about the fundamental problem of its interpretation. (Weinberg [1992], p. 66) I endorse the view that it may be of no relevance to the acceptability of the Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics as a physical theory whether or not an informed observer can be uncertain about the outcome of a quantum measurement prior to its having occurred. However, I suggest that the very possibility of post-measurement, pre-observation uncertainty has an essential role to play in both confirmation theory and decision theory in a branching universe. This is supported by arguments which do not appeal to van Fraassen’s Reflection Principle. 1. Dendritic Unitary Evolution 2. The Born–Vaidman Rule 3. Greaves on Uncertainty 4. Bohr is said to have remarked that anybody who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it. No physicist, however, challenges its practical usefulness in predicting experimental results and providing an explanatory framework for an enormous range of study. Nevertheless, more thoughtful physicists have been astonished and disturbed by what is implied when attempts are made to interpret its meaning. As a result a variety of ingenious, and sometimes bizarre, schemes have been devised since its inception in order to make these implications more acceptable to the scientific mind. Some of these schemes have resulted in proposals which appear stranger than the problems they have been designed to resolve. After some sixty years there is no consensus of opinion upon the solution of the epistemological problems posed. Indeed the debate keeps on resurfacing in the scientific literature and continues to generate library shelves of books. Some progress, however, has been made and the late John Bell himself and the experimental work of Alain Aspect have demonstrated that some epistemological positions cannot be sustained.
We give a finite path-kernel representation of record-conditioned quantum statistics, with a qualitative admissibility classification and an explicit restriction operation. The primitives are consistency constraints on observer-indexed information states: determinacy indexed to a state, informational blanks identified with superpositions, and a two-quantifier pruning rule, the third postulate, under which a state is valid when some declared refinement of it has no contradictionreaching descendant. Under a complete and persistent record structure the rule classifies every subset of a space of paths as valid, over-specified or consistency-pruned, drawing the quantumclassical boundary as the record partition before any weight exists. One quantitative axiom, the path kernel, then yields on a fixed finite domain a Hilbert representation of the admissible clusters with the Born statistics, record observables as self-adjoint operators by a soundness result, and the projection postulate as the representation of a stipulated record-compatible restriction, realized as L¨uders conditioning and not selected by the validity postulate alone; completeness is excluded on any one finite domain. The two-tag configuration exhibits both composition regimes in one apparatus and meets the quantitative predictions, and the same admissibility criterion governs an unread which-path record and an unread friend’s laboratory, with the condition still to be established for a whole laboratory stated as a physical premise. What records physically are, and the framework’s divergence from universal unitarity, are the companion’s.
