Quantum deep learning in remote sensing: achievements and challenges

Mehdi Khoshboresh-Masouleh, Reza Shah–Hosseini

In recent years, deep learning algorithms have shown promising results for different image analyzing tasks, particularly in remote sensing image processing. Inspired by the success of remote sensing sensors in geo-located imagery, many studies have been carried out on remote sensing sensors for image processing, which brings a new approach into intelligent remote sensing and photogrammetric computer vision. At the same time, algorithms for quantum processors have been shown to efficiently solve some issues that are intractable on conventional, classical processors. This study summarizes the novel techniques of deep learning and quantum deep learning and its research progress and real-world applications in remote sensing image processing, introduces the current main challenges in processing and its development of geo-located datasets, focuses on the analysis and elaboration of the research status of quantum deep learning in sensing and imaging, and on this basis, summarizes the intelligent remote sensing applications and their application effects in scene understanding.

Quantum AI: Deep Learning optimization using Hybrid Quantum Filters

Kaushik Ganguly

Abstract: Deep learning algorithms have shown promising results for different image processing tasks, particularly in remote sensing & image recognition. Till now many studies have been carried out on image processing, which brings a new paradigm of innovative capabilities under the umbrella of intelligent remote sensing and computer vision. Accordingly, quantum processing algorithms have proved to efficiently solve some issues that are undetectable to classical algorithms and processors. Keeping that in mind, a Quantum Convolutional Neural Network (QCNN) architecture along with Hybrid Quantum filters would be utilized supported by cloud computing infrastructures and data centers to provide a broad range of complex AI services and high data availability. This research summaries the conventional techniques of Classical and Quantum Deep Learning and it’s research progress on realworld problems in remote sensing image processing as a comparative demonstration. Last but not least, we evaluate our system by training on Street View House Numbers datasets in order to highlight the feasibility and effectiveness of using Quantum Deep Learning approach in image recognition and other similar applications. Upcoming challenges and future research areas on this spectrum are also discussed.

Remote Sensing Imagery Classification Techniques Using Quantum Deep Learning

Puneet Anchalia, G.S. Smrithy, D. Kavitha +1 more

Remote sensing imagery classification remains a formidable challenge, primarily attributed to the high dimensionality and complexity inherent in the data. While deep learning has demonstrated efficacy in this domain, its computational demands and reliance on extensive training data pose significant hurdles. This research investigates how quantum computing could be able to overcome these constraints and improve deep learning’s capacity for classifying remote sensing data. The study provides an extensive review of recent developments in quantum deep learning techniques specifically tailored for remote sensing applications. Various quantum algorithms designed for image feature extraction and classification are discussed, shedding light on their potential to revolutionize the field. As a practical demonstration, the chapter presents a case study focused on leveraging quantum deep learning for land cover classification using Sentinel-2 imagery. This chapter’s main focus is on hybrid quantum convolutional neural networks (QCNNs) based on circuits as effective tools for remote sensing picture classification. These hybrid models integrate quantum layers within traditional neural networks, introducing a novel paradigm for image analysis. To evaluate the efficacy of this approach, the proposed QCNN architecture is applied to land-use and land-cover classification, employing the Euro SAT dataset as a benchmark.
