Knob of adjusting transient optical switching by an outer magnetic field in a V-type degenerate medium

Thanh Thai Doan, Hoang Minh Dong

Abstract Magnetic field plays an important role in studying the transient response because the transition probabilities of degenerate energy levels depend on the external field. The application of an external magnetic field is of particular interest, as the magnetic field is readily available and more flexible to control than an additional laser field, which is an essential consideration in our paper. In this work, we propose a simple model for managing the transient absorption and dispersion properties in a degenerate two-level atomic medium under both transparency and absorption regimes in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC), an incoherent pumping field, and an external magnetic field. We show that a magnetic field can be utilized as a ‘knob’ to swap the transient absorption and dispersion properties of the system in both transparency and absorption regimes. The magnetic field not only aids in creating transparency and absorption regimes but is also helpful in controlling the system operating at different frequency regions for the probe field without changing the frequency of the coupling field; SGC is introduced to enhance the laser phase dependence of the atomic optical properties, while the incoherent pumping field plays a role in enhancing the effects of SGC and relative phase on the atomic optical properties. The influences of SGC, relative phase, and incoherent pumping rate on transient response are also considered to improve the stability of transient absorption and dispersion properties. Moreover, the essential time required for swapping between subluminal and superluminal light propagation is also provided. The proposed model shows that the system can be used as an ultrafast optical switch, which, in practice, may enable control over switching rates in quantum storage and information-processing devices.

Switching between slow light and fast light by static magnetic field in a degenerate four-level atomic system at room temperature

Nguyen Van Phu, Nguyen Huy Bang, Luong Thi Yen Nga +1 more

Abstract The optical response of a magnetic-degenerated four-level atom system to the two left and right circular polarization components of the probe field is represented at room temperature. The absorption spectrum and group index for the two polarization components of the probe field are controlled according to the static magnetic field and the coupling field under electromagnetically induced transparency condition. By varying the strength of the static magnetic field, the optical response of the atomic medium can be changed from transparency to absorption or vice versa and hence the amplitude of group index also changes from positive extreme to negative extreme or vice versa. The same phenomenon also occurs when changing the coupling field intensity. In addition, temperature also significantly influence on the optical response of the atomic medium, which changes not only the amplitude but also the sign of the group index as the temperature increases. Our analytical results can be useful for experimental observation and related applications of light group index/velocity at room temperature.

Inversion-free amplification of a probe field in a medium consisting of two-level degenerate atoms in the presence of a magnetic field

Nelly Pavlovna Konopleva, Anatolii M Tumaikin

The propagation of a probe field in a medium consisting of two-level atoms, degenerate in relation to the J g = 1/2 → J e = 1/2 transition, is examined. The atoms are pumped by a circularly polarised resonant field in the presence of a static magnetic field. It is shown that under these conditions one of the normal waves may be amplified in the absence of inversion in the medium. In strong optical and magnetic fields, inversion-free amplification is possible for a pump with a finite spectral width, which may be much greater than the natural width of the excited level.
