The Boundary is a Rate: Coherence–Rupture–Regeneration as a Temporal Physics of Emptiness Realisation

Abstract

Sandved-Smith, Fields, Doctor, Laukkonen and Hohwy argue that any system which persists must minimise surprisal and so gather evidence for its own generative model, but that one dimension of this self-evidencing is provably impossible: evidencing the boundary that would constitute the agent as separate from its environment. Because no finite system can measure the entanglement entropy across its own boundary, the separability of agent from environment is permanently unevidenceable, and they propose that the realisation of emptiness is the embodied recognition of this impossibility. We take their result to be correct and do not contest it. We ask what survives it when the self/environment partition is read not as a static holographic screen but as a rate—the moving locus, in the Coherence– Rupture–Regeneration (CRR) framework, at which accumulated Fisher information saturates the Cramer–Rao bound, ´ C·Ω = 1. CRR has been shown to govern the temporal coordination of precision channels in active inference; here we apply it to the boundary the impossibility theorem concerns. Embedding CRR in the quantum reference frame (QRF) formalism the original argument employs, we find: that the rupture instant is itself screen-inducing, so CRR inherits the impossibility rather than escaping it; that the single point at which the framework fails the formalism’s unitarity requirement is, on a measurement-theoretic reading, a signature rather than a defect; that the forbidden spatial correlation is robustly bounded by, though not identical to, an accumulated temporal quantity; and that the convergence of many finite systems produces a genuine, macroscopic, collective now through a synchronisation transition we establish by finite-size scaling against validated benchmarks. The contribution is not a refutation but a relocation: emptiness moves from an epistemic limit on measurement to an ontological claim about a present with no content of its own, met by the selectively weighted past of every other finite system. Keywords: self-evidencing; emptiness; quantum reference frames; holographic screens; free energy principle; Fisher information; Cramer–Rao saturation; synchronisation.

Realizing Emptiness: Operational Surrogates for No-Self-Evidence, QRF Opacification, and Bayesian Model Reduction

Daniel Friedman

This project operationalizes the 2026 preprint "There is no self-evidence: A physics of emptiness realisation" as a source-anchored software artifact. Its central claim is that a finite agent can use a boundary for prediction while never obtaining evidence that the boundary is ontologically real, and the software separates three local artifact roles: formal sanity checks for source equations, positive-control-style finite mechanism checks, and discriminating tests that reject stronger readings when a control is perturbed. The formal layer maps the paper's quantum free-energy principle (qFEP) and quantum reference frame (QRF) equations into finite operational surrogates, bridging each paper equation to a specific software artifact. The computed artifacts are a suite of finite quantum-information and contextuality audits — spanning two-qubit separability and entanglement entropy, Bell and contextuality witnesses, thermodynamic and open-system dynamics, seeded quantum-trajectory sampling checked against exact solutions, and frame-covariance checks for the quantum reference frame relabelings — with explicit positive controls, negative controls, or boundary checks recorded where the corresponding artifact contract requires them. The software represents QRF deployments as policies over boundary-channel sectorisations, using the same finite bitstream under self/environment/contextual relabelings so that QRF labels can organize prediction, action selection, and transformation covariance while failing to become evidence for an ontological self/world boundary. Bayesian model reduction is implemented as a sweep over prior precision and metacognitive access, extended with a sensitivity grid over observation noise. The separation prior is pruned only when removing it lowers the model's free energy, and kept when its remaining contribution to accuracy still offsets its complexity cost. The active-inference layer uses the inferactively-pymdp library (Heins et al. 2022) with profile-specific likelihood, transition, preference, and prior arrays for the separation-constrained, opacified, and post-dual quantum reference frame deployments, then records posterior beliefs, policy posteriors, selected actions, expected-free-energy summaries, seeded stochastic ensembles with null controls and replay seeds, and confidence intervals, without treating those simulations as empirical subject data. Practice protocols, compassion-policy scope, criticality-style indicators, quantum-boundary dynamics, empirical adapters, and artifact-release readiness are therefore written as bounded model interfaces, simulated indicators, local private release-readiness records, or blocked evidence classes. A physical realization of the quantum free-energy principle, public independent reproduction, and any human practice efficacy, neural measurement, or clinical outcome remain blocked future evidence classes. Measurement, Decoherence, and the Frozen Frame: A Presentist Reading of Quantum Reality

Robert Daniel Kitcey

Measurement, Decoherence, and the Frozen Frame: A Presentist Reading of Quantum Reality This work is an essay in natural philosophy, philosophy of physics, and temporal ontology. It develops a presentist reading of measurement in which objective reality is the presently instantiated, evolving physical world, while measurement records preserve selected aspects of earlier interactions. Its central argument is that physical consequences can persist through evolution without requiring the continued operative existence of the configurations from which those consequences arose. A measurement record is understood as a temporally isolated frozen frame of a past present. Its physical carrier exists and evolves now; its represented content refers to an interaction whose originating configuration has already changed. The frozen character belongs to the represented content, rather than to a physical halt in the world. Time is essentially removed from the recorded narrative when an interaction is represented as fixed information, even if a timestamp preserves its position within a historical sequence. The essay adopts continuous physical evolution along a coherent arrow of temporal succession, without an imposed fundamental frame rate. The discrete entries produced by instruments are samples within that continuing evolution. An ordered archive of measurements therefore preserves selected historical information rather than continuously instantiating the objective reality it represents. In the operative sense developed here, the earlier configuration is no longer real as the configuration acting now; its effects continue through the physical organization that has evolved from it. The double-slit experiment provides the principal pedagogical example. Localized detections accumulate into a spatial interference pattern. The finished display is a present physical record with historical content, rather than a simultaneous configuration of all the particles that produced it. The statistics of the marks retain evidential force: they constrain explanations of the coherent organization and physical interactions responsible for the detections. For coherently prepared path amplitudes, the detection probability density is: P(x) = |ψ₁(x) + ψ₂(x)|² = |ψ₁(x)|² + |ψ₂(x)|² + 2 Re[ψ₁*(x)ψ₂(x)]. The cross term expresses interference in the predicted spatial statistics. If the alternatives become correlated with normalized path-marker states E₁ and E₂, the unconditioned density becomes: P(x) = |ψ₁(x)|² + |ψ₂(x)|² + 2 Re[ψ₁*(x)ψ₂(x)⟨E₁|E₂⟩]. Identical marker states preserve the interference term; orthogonal marker states suppress it. This dependence concerns physical correlations and requires no conscious reading of the marker. The philosophical argument distinguishes that physical explanation from the temporal status of the completed record. A sequence of idealized detection records can be written: Rₙ = {(xᵢ, tᵢ) : i = 1, …, n}.Hₙ(B) = Σᵢ₌₁ⁿ 𝟙ᴮ(xᵢ).p̂ₙ(B) = Hₙ(B)/n. Here B is a detector bin and 𝟙ᴮ is its indicator. The histogram combines positions from successive interactions while omitting their temporal order. Under independent, identically prepared trials and stable apparatus conditions, its normalized counts estimate the corresponding bin probabilities. Accurate statistics need not constitute a continuous capture of the changing physical world that generated them. The account treats operative existence through physical efficacy at the relevant here and now, independently of human observation. It distinguishes an earlier event, its propagated consequences, and the currently existing record. Quantum coherence belongs within the evolving world; durable records belong within it as present physical organizations carrying historical information. The essay also distinguishes the suppression of accessible interference from the actual occurrence of one particular outcome, identifying the latter as a task for a developed physical account. The contribution is an ontological argument grounded in laboratory phenomena and quantum formalism. Equations and historical displays are treated as representations whose predictive value does not make them identical to objective reality. Local causal succession, a proposed common present, and a complete law of actualization are articulated as separate questions. Natural philosophy supplies the framework for asking how physical existence, temporal progression, causation, and historical reference fit together. The archive contains a ten-page illustrated essay, an Overleaf-importable pdfLaTeX source package, three pedagogical figures, two comparison tables, eight references, and an archival metadata companion. The figure-generation script and dependency list accompany the source. The plotted detections and coherence curves are reproducible synthetic illustrations; the experimental context is cited in the essay. The guiding proposition is that a record preserves selected aspects of a past present while reality proceeds beyond the configuration in which those aspects were actual. The archive records aspects of what once was; the world continues as what presently is.

Information-Theoretic Bound on Macroscopic Quantum Coherence from Topological Embedding Geometry

Patricio E. Valenzuela

Version of 08 July 2026: Technically refined preprint incorporating clarifications discovered post-submission. We derive a fundamental upper bound on the number of particles that can sustain quantum coherence in a maximally entangled state from a unified geometric framework in which the observable spacetime 𝓜 is a four-dimensional continuous embedding within a higher-dimensional substratum 𝓐 with quantized information interface. Three derivations—direct application of action quantization, the quantum Cramér-Rao bound, and the quantum capacity of the 𝓜–𝓐 information channel—converge to the canonical form N_crit = n_max ℏ / (2 |λ| |Ψ_max| V₃ τ); these are the same action-quantization constraint expressed in action, metrological, and channel-capacity language: the Cramér-Rao route additionally supplies the metrological (Heisenberg 1/N) reading, but the ceiling N_crit follows in every case from action quantization, not from three independent principles. The bound predicts sharp coherence saturation independent of environmental isolation, distinguishing the framework from standard environmental decoherence. Discriminating signatures include a conjectured distinction between fermionic and bosonic systems, an abrupt knee in decoherence rate scaling at N_crit, and a trade-off N · τ ≤ K_AFT relevant to quantum computation. A natural reinterpretation of dynamical decoupling as embedding trajectory engineering connects the framework to established experimental techniques.

Truth Is Nothing: Conditional Universality and the Ontology of Belief-Structures

Jihoon Yang

This paper argues that truth has no ontological substance — no metaphysical core, no intrinsic property, no transcendent ground. What exists instead are belief-structures that stabilize under specific boundary conditions. Truth is a survival-effect of such structures. The paper develops this thesis across two interlocking registers: a philosophical argument and a formal mathematical grounding. Philosophically, the paper introduces the concept of conditional universality: universality is not rule-invariance across all contexts but structural recurrence under contextual transformation. A belief-structure is conditionally universal when it maintains a strictly positive viability distance from collapse across a family of variable contexts. This dissolves the classical dichotomy between absolutism (which requires rule-invariance) and relativism (which denies any universal condition). Under this framework, transparency is not a moral preference but an ontological necessity — opacity eliminates the self-correction required for sustained viability. Formally, the paper establishes two theorems. The Born-Consistency Theorem proves that any probability measure on the projectors of a Hilbert space satisfying Non-Contextuality (NC), Countable Additivity, and Tensor-Product Multiplicativity uniquely takes the form μ(P) = Tr(ρP) for a density operator ρ. This covers all dimensions including the qubit case (dim = 2) left open by Gleason's theorem, resolved here via composite embedding and partial trace. The Capture Theorem establishes the converse: NC violation entails the impossibility of a global density operator, forcing fragmentation into a family of frame-local measures disintegrated over a disjoint union of non-commutative contexts. These two results provide the formal foundation for the paper's central claim: global state representability is equivalent to measure invariance across contexts. Truth, formally construed, is this invariance condition — not a relation to an external world, not coherence within a framework, but measure-theoretic consistency across the full event algebra. The paper absorbs Foucauldian genealogy into this structural framework while specifying the conditions genealogy leaves implicit: the ontological difference between genuine structural viability and domination through suppressed differentiation. Temporal Flow as the Origin of Quantum Delocalization: A Physical Consequence of Informational Saturation

GUILHERME ZAMBUZI

The Stochastic Rupture (SR) framework postulates that wavefunction collapse is an informational phase transition triggered by the saturation of local holographic entropy bounds. A central corollary of this framework is the emergence of proper time as a function of local informational occupancy: dτ = dt, IPlanck χ, η, Acausal . (1)While previous analyses focused primarily on the collapse regime (χ → 1), this work explores the opposite limit (χ → 0), characteristic of microscopic quantum systems. We propose that the extreme temporal acceleration associated with low informational saturation provides a physical explanation for quantum delocalization. In this picture, the wavefunction describes a temporally generated ensemble of rapidly iterated configurations within a coarse external time slice. Apparent spatial superposition therefore emerges as a relativistic asynchrony between informational proper time and macroscopic coordinate time.

There is no self-evidence: A physics of emptiness realisation

Lars Sandved-Smith, Chris Fields, Thomas Doctor +2 more

Any system that persists must minimise surprisal, thereby gathering evidence for its own generative model, a process known as self-evidencing. However, one dimension of self-evidencing is provably impossible: evidencing the boundary that would constitute the agent as an entity separate from their environment. Recent results in quantum information theory demonstrate that no finite system can measure the entanglement entropy across its own boundary, rendering the separability of agent from environment permanently unevidenceable. Subjectively therefore, there can be no evidence for a self separate from the world. We propose that the Buddhist notion of awakening, in the sense of stable realisation of emptiness, can be understood as the embodied recognition of this impossibility. We formalise the belief in separation as a structural prior over an agent's quantum reference frame (QRF) deployments, constraining all measurement frames to respect a self/environment partition. We describe how contemplative practice progressively opacifies this constraint by developing a model of the agent's own QRF dynamics, revealing the partition as a contingent modelling choice rather than a given feature of reality. Once visible, the prior is eliminated via Bayesian model reduction resulting in a post-dual agent with unconstrained QRF deployments. We argue that such priors suppress the inherent contextuality of the boundary and that their removal constitutes a formal counterpart to the Buddhist notion of emptiness realisation. Self-evidencing may continue unimpeded after this transition, grounded in structural realism about causal regularities, while the ontological commitment to a bounded self is relinquished. We discuss empirical predictions, including altered dynamical regimes in neural systems, and the formal relationship between emptiness realisation and compassion.
