Abstract

This paper explores the feasibility of using an atmospheric optical channel in a quantum key distribution communication system for communicating with unmanned aerial vehicles. The paper examines the specifics of turbulence in the tropospheric ground layer where the atmospheric link terminals of communication systems are located. The paper describes the methodology and a laboratory experimental setup. The paper measures the key optical, polarization, and network parameters in the presence of disturbance sources in the atmospheric optical segment. An experimental study of the atmospheric channel communication system under various weather conditions was conducted. The results of the experimental study of the influence of climatic factors on the characteristics of the atmospheric optical channel of the communication system showed a significant impact of climatic factors. The data obtained also allow us to formulate recommendations on the feasibility of using a quantum key distribution communication system with an atmospheric optical channel under various climatic factors and atmospheric turbulence.

In this article, we consider a communication system with quantum cryptographic equipment that implements quantum key distribution, in which there is a section of an atmospheric optical communication line. The features of turbulence occurrence in the surface layer of the troposphere, including in urban agglomerations, in which terminals of the atmospheric communication line of communication systems with quantum cryptographic protection are located, are considered. The methodology and experimental settings of the model experiment are described. The results of an experimental study of the effect of turbulence of various origins on the efficiency of a communication system with an atmospheric optical communication line are discussed. The results of the model experiment showed a significant effect of turbulence on the characteristics of the optical channel, which can be used to predict the functioning of secure communication systems with an atmospheric optical communication line

Quantum Secure Communications Using Wireless Quantum and Service Channels

S. E. Grychkin, E. P. Stroganova

This paper examines the design of a quantum communication system with information security technology using quantum key distribution, in which the quantum signal, as well as control and synchronization (service) signals, are distributed wirelessly. The quantum communication system under consideration can be built for secure communication with unmanned vehicles. The structure and architecture of quantum communication systems with unmanned vehicles are described. An analysis of the main types of unintentional interference for an atmospheric optical communication channel is provided. The main types of unintentional interference in a radio channel, which can be used as an open telecommunications service channel in a quantum communication system, are also considered. It has been shown that the main types of interference in the atmospheric optical channel are climatic and atmospheric factors, with atmospheric turbulence having a particularly significant influence. The influence of the electromagnetic environment on the service channel of a quantum communication system implemented in a radio channel is examined in detail.

Efficiency of QKD in Atmospheric Optical Communication Lines

Maksim V. Sapozhnikov, O. V. Kochergina, N. S. Kuznetsova +1 more

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the application of quantum key distribution technology in atmospheric optical communication lines to ensure the information security of transmitted information in urban infrastructure conditions and between critical infrastructure industrial facilities. The necessity of applying quantum key distribution technology in atmospheric optical communication channels is substantiated. The results of numerical modeling of quantum key distribution performance indicators confirm the need for their preliminary numerical analysis taking into account regional meteorological statistical data when designing network segments including atmospheric quantum key distribution systems. The developed software package enables optimization of system parameters for specific climatic conditions and channel topology which increases the efficiency of deploying secure networks including atmospheric optical channels for energy, financial and industrial facilities. The developed software package, implementing a physically based methodology for accounting for cumulative losses in such a communication channel, enables a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness of quantum key distribution taking into account turbulence, absorption, scattering, geometric losses, meteorological conditions and the characteristics of the detection equipment. The practical significance of the complex lies in the ability to optimize system parameters (wavelength, aperture diameter, transmitter power, etc.) for specific climatic conditions and channel topology, which is critical when designing secure networks that include atmospheric optical channels.

External Factors Influence on Quantum Cryptographic Communication System with Atmospheric Line

Evelin Y. Bushuev, Sergey Yu. Kazantsev, E. P. Stroganova +2 more

The article considers a communication system including quantum cryptographic equipment implementing quantum key distribution, in which there is a section of atmospheric optical communication line. The methodology and results of an experimental study of the influence of external nature factors on the efficiency of the communication system using an atmospheric optical communication line are discussed. The research method is based on monitoring the key indicators of the telecommunication channel of the communication network, which determine the quality of the communication system as a whole, such as data transfer rate, error rate, percentage of packet losses. The experiment was conducted on a communication system including a section of atmospheric optical communication line and terminals. The results of the study showed a significant influence of weather factors on the characteristics of the atmospheric optical channel. The data obtained emphasize the need to take into account the influence of external factors in the design and operation of communication systems with an atmospheric optical communication line

Experimental Modeling of the Atmospheric Disturbances Influence on the Wireless Quantum Channel Characteristics

Natalia V. Pchelkina, A. K. Nanidzhanyan, A. V. Bahus +1 more

The results of physical simulation of various optical disturbances in the atmospheric segment of a quantum wireless communication system are presented. Experimental setups for evaluating changes in the characteristics of the quantum key distribution system in an atmospheric communication channel in the presence of optical inhomogeneities in free-space (thermal zone disturbance, scattering water aerosol, incoming airflow) are described. Dynamic changes in quantum bit error rate (QBER) and the quantum sifted key generation rate under the influence of interfering disturbances in the atmospheric channel were obtained. It is determined that the strongest fluctuations in the characteristics of the quantum channel occurred when the source of disturbances was placed directly near the optical collimator connected to the quantum key distribution unit, which housed the single photon source.

Applicability of quantum key distribution technology under free-space atmospheric conditions to construct segments of modern quantum communication networks

Kirill Yu. Erokhin, Sergey Yu. Kazantsev, T. V. Kazieva +2 more

Subject of study. This study examined the applicability of quantum key distribution (QKD) technology under free-space atmospheric conditions. Aim of study. The objective was the development of a hardware and software system for investigating the applicability of QKD technology in wireless communication systems based on commercially available modules. The system includes optical blocks for atmospheric optical communication and a training setup for studying QKD in fiber-optic communication lines. Method. The characteristics of a quantum communication channel in free-space conditions were studied through experiments. The channel was formed by the QKD units of the EMQOS 1.0 scientific and educational complex, integrated with optical blocks for atmospheric optical communication. The systems were also upgraded to minimize losses in the quantum channel. Main results. A hardware and software system was developed, within which the transmission of a quantum key through free-space atmospheric conditions over a distance of 180 m was successfully demonstrated. The quantum bit error rate did not exceed 6%. This system enabled the study of the effects of weather conditions on optical losses in the quantum communication channel and the quantum key generation rate. Practical significance. The developed hardware and software system allows the monitoring of the parameters of both classical and quantum communication channels in free space under various weather conditions. Its modular structure enables the integration of other quantum equipment for comparative testing of the performance of quantum communication systems under real atmospheric transmission conditions.
