Security of a High Dimensional Two‐Way Quantum Key Distribution Protocol

Walter O. Krawec

Abstract Two‐way quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols utilize bi‐directional quantum communication to establish a shared secret key. Due to the increased attack surface, security analyses remain challenging. Here a high‐dimensional variant of the Ping Pong protocol is investigated and an information theoretic security analysis in the finite‐key setting is performed. The main contribution in this work is to show a new proof methodology for two‐way quantum key distribution protocols based on the quantum sampling framework of Bouman and Fehr introduced in 2010 and also sampling‐based entropic uncertainty relations introduced by the authors in 2019. The Ping Pong protocol is only investigated here, but these methods may be broadly applicable to other QKD protocols, especially those relying on two‐way channels. Along the way, some fascinating benefits to high‐dimensional quantum states applied to two‐way quantum communication are also showed.

Security-proof framework for two-way Gaussian quantum-key-distribution protocols

Quntao Zhuang, Zheshen Zhang, Norbert Lütkenhaus +1 more

Two-way Gaussian protocols have the potential to increase quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols' secret-key rates by orders of magnitudes [Phys. Rev. A 94, 012322 (2016)]. Security proofs for two-way protocols, however, are underdeveloped at present. In this paper, we establish a security proof framework for the general coherent attack on two-way Gaussian protocols in the asymptotic regime. We first prove that coherent-attack security can be reduced to collective-attack security for all two-way QKD protocols. Next, we identify two different constraints that each provide intrusion parameters which bound an eavesdropper's coherent-attack information gain for any two-way Gaussian QKD protocol. Finally, we apply our results to two such protocols.

Security of quantum key distribution protocol with two-way classical communication assisted by one-time pad encryption

Shun Watanabe, Ryutaroh Matsumoto, Tomohiko Uyematsu

In this paper, we consider a quantum key distribution protocol (QKD) with two-way classical communication that is assisted by one-time pad encryption. We propose a two-way preprocessing that uses one-time pad encryption by previously shared secret key, and the net key rate of the QKD with proposed preprocessing exceeds the key rate of the QKD without it. The preprocessing is reduced to the entanglement distillation protocol with two-way classical communication and previously shared EPR pairs (two-way breeding protocol), and the security of QKD with the preprocessing is guaranteed in the same way as Shor and Preskill's arguments.
