Abstract

We explore how the dissipative geometric phase evolves within the spin-boson model, focusing specifically on coupling to an Ohmic bath in the weakly coherent regime. To determine the non-unitary time evolution of the system's reduced density matrix, we employ the non-interacting blip approximation (NIBA). For the localized pure initial state used throughout, we derive a compact Bloch-sphere expression showing that the mixed-state geometric phase is a weighted azimuthal winding of the dissipative trajectory. We then map geometric-phase accumulation across various system-bath coupling strengths, temperatures, static biases, and bath cutoff frequencies. Benchmarking representative results against the numerically exact time-evolving matrix product operator (TEMPO) technique shows that NIBA reproduces the population dynamics almost indistinguishably. It also captures the geometric phase quantitatively and qualitatively, although TEMPO reveals a clearer trend in the stationary coherence. Our results show that quantum dissipation suppresses the geometric phase through two complementary mechanisms: thermal noise reduces the state's purity, while static bias localizes the dynamics and reduces the accessible geometric area.

Geometric phases and quantum correlations dynamics in spin-boson model

Wei Wu, Jing‐Bo Xu

We explore the dynamics of spin-boson model for the Ohmic bath by employing the master equation approach and obtain an explicit expression of reduced density matrix. We also calculate the geometric phases of the spin-boson model by making use of the analytical results and discuss how the dissipative bosonic environment affects geometric phases. Furthermore, we investigate the dynamics of quantum discord and entanglement of two qubits each locally interacting with its own independent bosonic environments. It is found that the decay properties of quantum discord and entanglement are sensitive to the choice of initial state's parameter and coupling strength between system and bath.

Floquet Dressing and Bath Spectral Effects on the Geometric Phase of a Driven Dissipative Qubit

Chirag Arora

The geometric phase (GP) of a periodically driven symmetricspin-boson model (SBM) is investigated using the process-tensor time-evolving matrix product operator (PT-TEMPO) method. A longitudinal monochromatic field drives the qubit along the \emph{same} coordinate that couples to an Ohmic bosonic environment. The gauge-invariant kinematic GP is evaluated from the reduced-statetrajectory, and a circular non-additivity measure quantifies the combined effects of driving and dissipation relative to driven-unitary and undriven-dissipative references. Amplitude, frequency, coupling-strength, and bath-cutoff sweeps reveal regimes in which periodic driving reduces or enhances environmental phase deformation relative to the unitary counterpart. The one-cycle GP exhibits pronounced nonmonotonic drive frequency dependence, while its bath-induced shift depends sensitively on both coupling strength and cutoff. These trends are interpreted qualitatively in terms of Floquet dressing and bath spectral structure. A two-cycle echo provides a complementary reversibility diagnostic, whose persistence signal does not generally measure the Tong GP. The results characterize the non-additive influence of driving and dissipation on geometric-phase dynamics and identify parameter regimes of reduced bath-induced deformation.

Dynamics, synchronization, and quantum phase transitions of two dissipative spins

Peter P. Orth, David Roosen, Walter Hofstetter +1 more

We analyze the static and dynamic properties of two Ising-coupled quantum spins embedded in a common bosonic bath as an archetype of dissipative quantum mechanics. First, we elucidate the ground-state phase diagram for an Ohmic and a sub-Ohmic bath using a combination of bosonic numerical renormalization group (NRG), analytical techniques, and intuitive arguments. Second, by employing the time-dependent NRG we investigate the system's rich dynamical behavior arising from the complex interplay between spin-spin and spin-bath interactions. Interestingly, spin oscillations can synchronize due to the proximity of the common non-Markovian bath and the system displays highly entangled steady states for certain nonequilibrium initial preparations. We complement our nonperturbative numerical results by exact analytical solutions when available and provide quantitative limits on the applicability of the perturbative Bloch-Redfield approach at weak coupling.

Spin-boson model under dephasing: Markovian versus non-Markovian dynamics

Naushad Ahmad Kamar, Daniel A. Paz, Mohammad F. Maghrebi

The spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath, is extensively studied as a paradigmatic dissipative quantum system, exhibiting rich dynamical behavior and even a localization transition in the strong coupling regime. Here, we additionally consider dephasing as a source of Markovian dissipation on top of the non-Markovian dynamics due to an Ohmic bath, and investigate the dynamics of the spin. We show that the characteristic frequency of the spin dynamics, while strongly renormalized by the bosonic bath, changes in a simple fashion (or does not change at all) with dephasing. To obtain these results, we develop an exact nonperturbative method known as the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation, mimicking the Ohmic bath via a stochastic magnetic field combined with the Lindblad quantum master equation due to dephasing, which allows us to numerically compute the dynamics. Furthermore, we derive weak-coupling analytic results utilizing the well-known noninteracting blip approximation. Our findings are relevant to quantum simulation of the spin-boson model in the regime of strong coupling in trapped ions and circuit QED architectures among others.

Entanglement structure of the dynamical phases in the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model

Cunxi Gong, Zirui Sheng, Weitang Li

The sub-Ohmic spin-boson model exhibits three distinct dynamical regimes in its spin population dynamics, classified as coherent, incoherent, and pseudo-coherent. Whether these regimes correspond to distinct spin-bath entanglement structures remains an open question. Here we address this using tree tensor network states with projector-splitting time evolution (TTN-TDVP-PS), scanning a broad grid in the sub-Ohmic $(s, α)$ plane. We find that the spin entanglement entropy $S_\mathrm{spin}(t)$ reaches a stationary plateau on a timescale shorter than the polarization relaxation, enabling construction of a stationary entropy landscape from the stationary value $S_\mathrm{stable}$. Within this scalar entropy landscape, the entropy ridge broadly follows the population-based phase boundary at small $s$, but does not reproduce the two-branch structure at large $s$. The ridge remains single-valued within the incoherent region rather than separately tracking both population-based transitions. The Bloch-sphere representation provides a geometric interpretation of this behavior. The entropy plateau corresponds to trajectories settling onto constant-radius shells, with the ridge marking the parameters of smallest stationary Bloch radius. Mode-resolved bath entanglement shows that low-frequency modes dominate the environmental entropy scale and that coherent dynamics enhance bath-mode correlations beyond direct spin--mode correlations. These results establish the stationary spin entanglement entropy as a physically informative observable that complements population-based classifications of dissipative quantum dynamics.

Hidden Phase of the Spin-Boson Model

Florian Otterpohl, P. Nalbach, Michael Thorwart

A quantum two-level system immersed in a sub-Ohmic bath experiences enhanced low-frequency quantum statistical fluctuations which render the nonequilibrium quantum dynamics highly non-Markovian. Upon using the numerically exact time-evolving matrix product operator approach, we investigate the phase diagram of the polarization dynamics. In addition to the known phases of damped coherent oscillatory dynamics and overdamped decay, we identify a new third region in the phase diagram for strong coupling showing an aperiodic behavior. We determine the corresponding phase boundaries. The dynamics of the quantum two-state system herein is not coherent by itself but slaved to the oscillatory bath dynamics.
