Abstract

Itis well known that in quantum information quantum relative is monotonically decreasing under the completely positive and trace-preserving maps. For a new proposed sandwiched R\'enyi quantum relative, a map that is linear trace-preserving and whose Hilber-Schmidt adjoint map satisfies Schwarz inequality, monotonicity still holds. We give a new proof of monotonicity of sandwiched R\'enyi relative entropy for $\alpha\in[\frac{1}{2},1)$. The proof is based on complex interplotation techniques, which already has been used to prove monotonicity under trace-preserving and positive map for $\alpha\in(1,\infty)$.

We show that a recent definition of relative Rényi entropy is monotone under completely positive, trace preserving maps. This proves a recent conjecture of Müller-Lennert et al. Maximal Rényi Relative Entropy for $α>2$

Roberto Rubboli

Quantum relative entropies play a fundamental role in quantum information theory. In the classical setting, Rényi relative entropies constitute, up to linear combinations, the most general class of relative entropies, naturally motivating the search for their minimal and maximal quantum extensions. The minimal extension is known to be the reverse sandwiched Rényi relative entropy for $α\in[0,1/2)$ and the sandwiched Rényi relative entropy for $α\geq 1/2$. In contrast, the maximal extension had previously been identified only for $α\in[0,2]$, where it is given by the geometric Rényi relative entropy. In this work, we complete this characterization by proving that for $α>2$, the maximal extension is given by the $α$-$z$ Rényi relative entropy with $z=α-1$. As an application, we determine when an energy-incoherent state can be transformed into an energy-coherent state by a Gibbs-preserving operation assisted by an uncorrelated catalyst, thereby fully characterizing the coherence-generating power of this class of operations in the catalytic setting.

Carlen-Frank-Lieb conjecture and monotonicity of $\alpha-z$ R\'enyi relative entropy

Haonan Zhang

In this paper we study the joint convexity/concavity of the trace functions \[ \Psi_{p,q,s}(A,B)=\text{Tr}(B^{\frac{q}{2}}K^*A^{p}KB^{\frac{q}{2}})^s,~~p,q,s\in \mathbb{R}, \] where $A$ and $B$ are positive definite matrices and $K$ is any fixed invertible matrix. We will give full range of $(p,q,s)\in\mathbb{R}^3$ for $\Psi_{p,q,s}$ to be jointly convex/concave for all $K$. As a consequence, we confirm a conjecture of Carlen, Frank and Lieb. In particular, we confirm a weaker conjecture of Audenaert and Datta and obtain the full range of $(\alpha,z)$ for $\alpha$-$z$ Renyi relative entropies to be monotone under completely positive trace preserving maps. We also give simpler proofs of many known results, including the concavity of $\Psi_{p,0,1/p}$ for $0<p<1$ which was first proved by Epstein using complex analysis. The key is to reduce the problem to the joint convexity/concavity of the trace functions \[ \Psi_{p,1-p,1}(A,B)=\text{Tr} K^*A^{p}KB^{1-p},~~-1\le p\le 1, \] using a variational method.

Sandwiched Rényi relative entropy on density operators

Ting Zhang, Xiaofei Qi

Relative entropies play important roles in classical and quantum information theory. In this paper, we discuss the sandwiched Rényi relative entropy for [Formula: see text] on [Formula: see text] (the cone of positive trace-class operators acting on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space [Formula: see text]) and characterize all surjective maps preserving the sandwiched Rényi relative entropy on [Formula: see text]. Such transformations have the form [Formula: see text] for each [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is either a unitary or an anti-unitary operator on [Formula: see text]. Particularly, all surjective maps preserving sandwiched Rényi relative entropy on [Formula: see text] (the set of all quantum states on [Formula: see text]) are necessarily implemented by either a unitary or an anti-unitary operator.

Monotonicity versions of Epstein's Concavity Theorem and related inequalities

Eric A. Carlen, Haonan Zhang

Many trace inequalities can be expressed either as concavity/convexity theorems or as monotonicity theorems. A classic example is the joint convexity of the quantum relative entropy which is equivalent to the Data Processing Inequality. The latter says that quantum operations can never increase the relative entropy. The monotonicity versions often have many advantages, and often have direct physical application, as in the example just mentioned. Moreover, the monotonicity results are often valid for a larger class of maps than, say, quantum operations (which are completely positive). In this paper we prove several new monotonicity results, the first of which is a monotonicity theorem that has as a simple corollary a celebrated concavity theorem of Epstein. Our starting points are the monotonicity versions of the Lieb Concavity and the Lieb Convexity Theorems. We also give two new proofs of these in their general forms using interpolation. We then prove our new monotonicity theorems by several duality arguments.

Optimized Quantum F-Divergences

Mark M. Wilde

The quantum relative entropy is a measure of the distinguishability of two quantum states, and it is a unifying concept in quantum information theory: many information measures such as entropy, conditional entropy, mutual information, and entanglement measures can be realized from it. As such, there has been broad interest in generalizing the notion to further understand its most basic properties, one of which is the data processing inequality. The quantum f-divergence of Petz is one generalization of the quantum relative entropy, and it also leads to other relative entropies, such as the Petz-Renyi relative entropies. In this contribution, I introduce the optimized quantum f-divergence as a related generalization of quantum relative entropy. I prove that it satisfies the data processing inequality, and the method of proof relies upon the operator Jensen inequality, similar to Petz's original approach. Interestingly, the sandwiched Renyi relative entropies are particular examples of the optimized f-divergence. Thus, one benefit of this approach is that there is now a single, unified approach for establishing the data processing inequality for both the Petz-Renyi and sandwiched Renyi relative entropies, for the full range of parameters for which it is known to hold.
