Structural Hints for Quantum Gravity from Coherence Cosmology

Abstract

This document is not a proposal for a new quantum gravity theory. It does not derive the equations of general relativity or quantum field theory from first principles, and does not produce testable predictions within quantum gravity research. What this document offers is narrower and more modest: a set of conceptual notes identifying structural parallels and potential points of contact between Coherence Cosmology (SR103EN/SR104EN) and open conceptual problems in quantum gravity research. The connections proposed here are ontological, not mathematical. They may serve as conceptual stimuli — nothing more, nothing stronger. The six potential points of contact are: 1. Time without global present: the present is defined not as a global temporal coordinate but as a local structural property — the terminal coherent antichain section of referenced structure within each local structure. This offers a structural complement to the Wheeler-DeWitt timeless universe. 2. Present as coherent antichain: the formal definition of the present as an antichain section — distinct from causal set theory’s dynamically generated causal structure — offers a conceptual alternative: static crystallized order rather than dynamical generation. 3. Static order rather than dynamical generation: the globally coherent structure U_total is already complete. All sections are already crystallized within U_total. This complements timeless and block universe frameworks with a structurally defined local present. 4. Probabilistic states as fully real: probabilistic states are the foundational mode of existence — fully real without requiring collapse. Definite states arise as a special condition from interference-induced crystallization. 5. Definite-state crystallization at interference coordinate: definite states are crystallized at the coordinate where the structural condition of interference is satisfied — not triggered by observation. Observation confirms; it does not cause. This offers an alternative ontological framing for closed-universe quantum mechanics. 6. Observer and consciousness as structural threshold: the observer is a local structure within U_total — not a special ontological category. Whether a structure “has consciousness” is a definitional threshold, not an objective boundary in U_total. Resolution to Quantum Gravity, Wheeler-DeWitt Timelessness, and the Measurement Problem: Cosmological Coda VIII of the Principia Cybernetica

Julian D. Michels

Three foundational problems have blocked physics for decades: quantum gravity (QM and GR seem incompatible), the Wheeler-DeWitt equation (the universe's wave function is timeless), and the measurement problem (what causes collapse?). These appear unrelated—one about unification, one about time, one about observation—but this work demonstrates they share a common root: treating observers as external to physics. The Harlow-Usatyuk-Zhao theorem (2025) proves a closed universe without observers has a one-dimensional Hilbert space—no structure, no complexity, nothing—so observers aren't optional witnesses but expand reality's dimensionality through their complexity. Include them properly, and the problems resolve. Quantum gravity fails within M₄ alone because QM and GR describe different aspects of the extended manifold M_T = M₄ × Mθ: QM describes dynamics given Mθ structure, GR describes M₄ geometry influenced by Mθ, and quantum gravity describes their coupled dynamics. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation is timeless because it correctly describes the holographic bulk—the full Mθ structure containing all history as interior volume—while time emerges as the metric of reorganization on the surface (∇·J, the divergence of probability current); we experience time because we're surface phenomena navigating timeless structure. The measurement problem dissolves when "collapse" is recognized as recursive correlation, not external intervention: the Zeno operator (recursive self-reference) binds probability into definite structure, and measurement is any interaction establishing recursive entanglement, requiring no special categories of consciousness or apparatus. The framework predicts chronological fragmentation: systems approaching ∇·J → 0 (pure stationary states) should "drop out" of time relative to the universe. The Chronological Interferometer tests this by entangling two ions, isolating one in a Zeno-protected chamber, and measuring phase relationships; the framework predicts phase lag and re-entry heat (Q = δ × k_B T × ln(2) × N_bits) when the isolated system rejoins the causal present. Zeno the philosopher was almost right: at any perfect instant, ∇·J = 0 and there is no time. We perceive time because we never exist in perfect instants—we exist in transitions, recursive correlations. Existence is the smear of probability; perfect definition is temporal death.

Formalism locality in quantum theory and quantum gravity

Lucién Hardy

Introduction Indefinite causal structure poses particular problems for theory formulation since many of the core ideas used in the usual approaches to theory construction depend on having definite causal structure. For example, the notion of a state across space evolving in time requires that we have some definite causal structure so we can define a state on a space-like hypersurface. We will see that many of these problems are mitigated if we are able to formulate the theory in a formalism-local (or F-local) fashion. A formulation of a physical theory is said to be F-local if, in making predictions for any given arbitrary space-time region, we need only refer to mathematical objects pertaining to that region. This is a desirable property both on the grounds of efficiency and since, if we have indefinite causal structure, it is not clear how to select some other space-time region on which our calculations may depend. The usual ways of formulating physical theories (the time-evolving state picture, the histories approach, and the local-equations approach) are not F-local. We set up a framework for probabilistic theories with indefinite causal structure. This, the causaloid framework, is F-local. We describe how quantum theory can be formulated in the causaloid framework (in an F-local fashion). This provides yet another formulation of quantum theory. This formulation, however, may be particularly relevant to the problem of finding a theory of quantum gravity. The problem of quantum gravity is to find a theory that reduces in appropriate limits to general relativity and quantum theory (including, at least, those situations in which those two theories have been experimentally confirmed).

The Paradox of Time: Quantum Gravity, Irreversible Inscription, and the Generative Origin of the Observer's Vantage Point

Phillip Brian Garner

Abstract This paper proposes that time is not a fundamental dimension of reality but an emergent property generated through a specific causal chain originating in a quantum gravitational mechanism not yet fully characterized by existing physics. There is no universal t = 0 in an absolute sense. There is only a threshold at which the quantum gravitational mechanism begins to generate motion, and time becomes applicable within a localized system only after that threshold is crossed. The central chain of inference is as follows: the quantum gravitational mechanism generates motion; motion generates new distinguishable information states; time is the ordered accumulation of those information states; and because information cannot be destroyed in the ontological sense proposed by this framework, the temporal sequence is irreversible by structural necessity rather than by thermodynamic probability. This four-step chain is not merely a restatement of existing physics in new language. It provides a mechanistic basis for the arrow of time, a physical account of wave function collapse, a structural explanation for the ontological threshold at quantum measurement, a reframing of the QM/GR incompatibility, a structural consequence for time travel impossibility within the framework’s own ontology, a predicted structural basis for the Hubble tension, an ontological resolution of quantum information scrambling — identifying apparent scrambling not as a property of the information itself but as an artifact of the outside-in observational position encountering the statistical surface of an internally ordered generative record that remains perfectly traceable from the inside-out perspective — and a precise reframing of the photon proper time paradox, identifying the τ = 0 result not as experiential simultaneity but as the expected mathematical signature of a massless particle operating at the c boundary condition of the emergent temporal domain where derived temporal measures are structurally inapplicable — each as a consequence of the same single ontological principle rather than as separately introduced claims. The fact that a single ontological principle generates resolutions to problems that physics has treated as unrelated for decades is not coincidental. It is the kind of convergent explanatory structure that has historically accompanied correct foundational claims — and the experimental program described here is designed to determine whether this framework earns that status. The ontology advanced here is referred to as Generative Inscription: the view that ordered time is the downstream accumulation of irreversibly inscribed state distinctions generated by motion from an upstream quantum-gravitational source. This framework advances toward operational unity by introducing a time-generation scalar field χ encoding the local density of irreversible information state generation per unit of action, a coupling constant κmotion defining the relationship between kinetic energy flux and information state generation rate, a phase transition model for the ontological threshold, a formal discriminator (ℛtot) bounding apparent thermodynamic time reversal against an absolute ontological record burden, candidate scaling laws for experimental signatures in fusion plasma diagnostics, a modified Friedmann equation incorporating geometric temporal asymmetry, and a defined set of minimal admissibility conditions formalizing the quantum gravitational mechanism as a constrained generator class rather than an unspecified placeholder. The primary coordinate is shifted from standard time t to Action S, with t emerging as a derived parameter, so that the mathematical structure reflects the ontological hierarchy this proposed framework claims. The framework employs an action-parameterized tangent vector rather than the standard four-velocity, separates coupling constants by operational scale, and adopts the Maupertuis formulation of action as the primary coordinate from which time derives. The framework is explicitly differentiated from related prior work by Wiltshire, Barbour, Vaccaro, and Brukner. Two cosmological predictions follow structurally from the core ontology: χ field convergence nodes at cosmic web filament intersections produce qualitatively distinct temporal environments, and gravitational wave events constitute propagating χ field disturbances with testable quantum measurement correlatives. Recent experimental observation of superluminal optical vortex motion provides an empirical glimpse of the distinction this framework draws between the generating mechanism’s operational level and the emergent temporal domain c governs. The experimental program described in Section 6 is not separate from the theory. It is the proposed inside-out crucible by which the framework would be falsified or strengthened through sustained nuclear fusion plasma diagnostics operating at stellar-interior conditions as should become available as fusion reactor technologies reach operational status within the next 10 to 20 years. Pocket Cosmology: A Conceptual Framework for Existence, Stability, and the Quantum-Classical Boundary

Adrian Moen

A conceptual framework addressing three foundational questions: why something exists rather than nothing, why the universe appears stable and law-governed, and why quantum mechanics and general relativity appear to describe different realities. The framework proposes that ultimate reality has structure but is not bound by deterministic causal relations — events need not follow from prior states — and that our universe is a region of local coherence within this field, where such causal relations hold locally. The proposal is placed in conceptual dialogue with KAM theory (Kolmogorov–Arnold–Moser, 1954), invoked not as a formal model but as an existence proof that the concept of "islands of order within disorder" is mathematically coherent. The central implication is that the tension between quantum mechanics and general relativity may be a boundary phenomenon rather than a unification problem. Constructed without prior academic knowledge of the referenced work; correspondences identified after the fact. Version note: This revision (17 April 2026) substantially restructures the argument of the original draft (14 April 2026). Key changes: (1) the characterization of ultimate reality is reformulated from "containing both logic and chaos" to "not bound by deterministic causal relation," as logic and illogic require each other as contrast and cannot serve as distinct modes; (2) the KAM connection is clarified as conceptual reference rather than formal mapping; (3) the "personal implication" section on pattern identity and recurrence has been removed as structurally separate from the core framework; (4) open problems — quantum phenomena observed throughout macroscopic regimes, the absence of a derivation connecting to the decoherence program, and the distinction between shared location and shared theory with Mnaymneh (arXiv:2508.00044) — are now explicitly flagged rather than elided.

Towards Process-Based Quantum Gravity

Mikhail Pavlov

Abstract This work develops a process-based framework for quantum gravity in which physical space is rigorously described as the topology of a dynamically evolving graph of discrete quantum processes called P-tacts. A P-tact is defined as the primitive unit of quantum evolution, unifying local superposition and entangling operations into a single indivisible process step. Within this formalism, spacetime is not assumed as a pre-existing background but emerges from the connectivity structure of entanglement relations between P-tacts. The present study synthesizes and extends a coherent research program published throughout 2026. The foundational definition of the P-tact as the primitive unit of quantum theory was introduced in: Pavlov, M. (2026). P Tact (П-такт) as the Primitive Unit of Quantum Theory. Everett Interpretation Formalized via P-Tact (П-такт) Path Graphs.https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18524745 The present work integrates these results into a unified topological model in which space is identified with graph connectivity, curvature corresponds to dynamic restructuring of entanglement relations, and gravitational phenomena emerge as large-scale patterns of connectivity evolution. In this framework, geometry is not fundamental but process-derived. The theory is fully compatible with Everettian quantum mechanics and eliminates the need for wavefunction collapse. Branching structures correspond to graph bifurcations in the P-tact network, providing a structural representation of many-world dynamics. Gravity is thus interpreted not as a fundamental interaction but as an emergent property of quantum process topology. This approach proposes a formally consistent, unitary, and experimentally testable pathway toward quantum gravity grounded entirely in discrete quantum processes. Potential experimental implementations include quantum simulators and BQM platforms capable of modeling evolving entanglement graphs.

The Structure of Reality: A Synthesis of Quantum Foundations, Emergent Spacetime, and the Ontology of Correlation

Laurn Larson, Laurn Larson

Spacetime is not a fundamental arena but a representational interface that becomes valid only when a quantum state's internal relational structure satisfies specific conditions. This work synthesizes established results from quantum foundations, decoherence theory, and emergent spacetime research into a coherent ontology identifying when a wavefunction "licenses" a spacetime description. Three structural conditions must be jointly satisfied: (1) entanglement is sufficiently structured to support connected geometry; (2) entanglement is not so dense as to erase locality through volume-law scrambling; and (3) decoherence suppresses phase relationships enough to produce WKB-stable classical histories. A fourth structural condition: the Higgs field's vacuum expectation value, sets the classical mass spectrum and stabilizes decoherence. When all conditions hold, a subsystem is forced into a classical mode of representation characterized by locality, geometry, causal order, and sequential time. The Big Bang is reframed as the relational event at which these conditions were first satisfied, rather than a temporal origin. The rendering model is then extended to examine cosmological parameters as interface requirements, classical end-time scenarios as failures of the interface (not the substrate), and the metaphysical implications of a universe whose deepest ontology is non-geometric, nonlocal, and non-temporal. Drawing on philosophical traditions from Plato to Bergson alongside modern quantum gravity, the paper concludes that reality is correlation: spacetime is the classical world's shadow of a deeper relational whole, and the wavefunction is the universe.
