This thesis is a contribution to the debate on (a) fully understanding and describing the communication between remote systems through quantum fields, and (b) constructing a theoretical model for accurately describing the information transmission, which does not lead to a violation of causality. To this end, we studied the system of two localized detectors (oscillators) interacting through a mass-less scalar quantum field in a vacuum state via an Unruh-DeWitt coupling. This system admits an exact solution is providing a good model for addressing fundamental issues in particle-field interactions, causality, and locality in quantum field measurements that are relevant to proposed quantum experiments in space. Our analysis of the exact solution led to the following results. (i) Common approximations used in the study of analogous open quantum systems fail when the distance between the detectors becomes of the order of the relaxation time. In particular, the creation of correlations between remote detectors is not well described by ordinary perturbation theory and the Markov approximation. (ii) There is a unique asymptotic state that is correlated; it is not entangled unless the detector separation is of the order of magnitude of the wavelength of the exchanged quanta. (iii) The evolution of seemingly localized observables is non-causal. The latter is a manifestation of Fermi’s two-atom problem, albeit in an exactly solvable system. We argue that the problem of causality requires a re-examination of the notion of entanglement in relativistic systems, in particular, the physical relevance of its extraction from the quantum vacuum.

In this thesis, we study some foundational aspects of detector models in quantum field theory (QFT) related to signaling and localization, and we analyze certain frictions with relativistic causality. We characterize the spatiotemporal information that can be extracted from the field using various detector models in different regimes and we define a signaling estimator, based on quantum metrology, that can be used to quantify how much signaling can be transmitted reliably through the quantum field. We analyze ‘impossible measurements’ scenarios in which the microcausality condition in QFT is not sufficient for blocking superluminal signaling between multiple detectors coupled to the field. Further, since QFT does not admit a straightforward particle or field ontology, we ask: what do detectors detect? We answer this question by interpreting the detector’s response in different regimes, for single-particle wavepacket states or coherent states of the field. In the weak coupling regime, we demonstrate in detail how detector models can be used to save particle-like phenomenology, related to the phenomenon of resonance and ‘time-of-arrival’. In the strong coupling regime, we demonstrate how a continuous pointer variable can get correlated with smeared field time-averages. Finally, adapting the formalism of the quantum Brownian motion, we develop an improved field-detector interaction model that is exactly solvable and can be used to characterize the weak, strong and intermediate regime. Apart from an improved description of field measurements and resonance, this models clearly demonstrates the modulation of particle-field duality by a single tunable parameter (the coupling strength), which is a novel feature that is in principle experimentally accessible.
The setup in which two quantum systems, Alice and Bob, communicate using \nbosonic field quanta can be viewed as a prototype for wireless quantum communication. \nIn this thesis we focus on the most basic case, where Alice and Bob \nare modeled as Unruh-DeWitt detectors, i.e., as two-level quantum \nsystems that interact locally through a scalar quantum field. Our aim is to study how information propagation and entanglement generation between the two detectors are impacted by both relativity and by the unavoidable noise that is due to the quantum fluctuations of the field. \n \nWe start by studying information propagation between the two detectors. Concretely, we construct and study the information-theoretic quantum channel, ξ, i.e., the completely positive trace preserving map between the input density matrix ϱ, in which Alice prepares her detector for the emission, and the output density matrix ϱ '=ξ(ϱ) of Bob's detector at a later time. We confirm that the classical as well as the quantum channel capacity are strictly zero to all orders in perturbation theory for spacelike separations. \n \nWe then study entanglement generation between the two detectors. Specifically, we discuss how two Unruh-DeWitt detectors can extract entanglement from the vacuum. We show that the detectors can naturally and instantaneously become entangled through a Casimir-Polder effect. We then analyze the impact of various additions to this setup, such as the presence of a weak gravitational field, the presence of boundary conditions in the field, the presence of a weak classical potential, etc.
