Abstract

Abstract We theoretically investigate the self-nonlinear and cross-nonlinear responses of the Λ-type, V-type, and ladder-type three-level atomic systems. The analytical solutions of the cross-nonlinearity are obtained by using an iterative method. These analytical expressions reveal that the atomic decay rates and two-photon resonance are closely related to the cross-nonlinear response. For the Λ-type system, the relaxation rate between the ground-state sublevels determines the amplitude and linewidth of the cross-nonlinearity. For the ladder-type system, the lifetime of the upper excited state governs the amplitude and linewidth of the cross-nonlinearity. In both systems, the amplitude of the cross-nonlinearity is significantly enhanced, and the linewidth is greatly compressed simultaneously. In contrast, for the V-type three-level system, the amplitude and linewidth of the cross-nonlinearity are related to the spontaneous emission rate of the excited states, where neither the amplitude enhancement nor the linewidth compression is observed. We conclude that the cross-nonlinear response can reach or even exceed the linear response in the Λ-type system when the relaxation rate between the ground states is sufficiently small, or in the ladder-type system when the spontaneous emission rate of the upper excited state is sufficiently small. Compared with the crossnonlinearity, the self-nonlinearity is related to the Rabi frequency and detuning of the coupling field. Its amplitude decreases with the increase of the coupling Rabi frequency, while it can be increased to a certain extent with the increase of the coupling detuning. Our results provide a theoretical basis for the optimization and application of strong nonlinear effects in three-level atomic systems.

Effect of Doppler broadening on giant self-Kerr nonlinearity in a five-level ladder-type system

Nguyen Huy Bang, Dinh Xuan Khoa, Doan Hoai Son +1 more

In this paper, we propose an analytical model to study the effect of Doppler broadening on self-Kerr nonlinearity in a five-level ladder-type atomic system. First- and third-order susceptibilities and the self-Kerr nonlinear coefficient are found as the function of temperature and parameters of laser fields. The analytical model is applied to hot $^{85}{\rm Rb}$85Rb and $^{87}{\rm Rb}$87Rb atoms, and it is shown that under the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect, the self-Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced around three transparent spectral regions. When the temperature of atomic vapor increases (i.e., Doppler width increases), the depth and width of the EIT windows decrease accordingly, and therefore the amplitude of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient decreases significantly. In addition, because the frequency gaps between hyperfine levels of upper excited state ${{5\rm D}_{5/2}}$5D5/2 of $^{85}{\rm Rb}$85Rb atoms are much smaller than those of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$87Rb atoms, the EIT windows as well as the nonlinear dispersion curves for $^{85}{\rm Rb}$85Rb atoms are closer than those for $^{87}{\rm Rb}$87Rb atoms as the Doppler effect presents. The analytical results agree well with the experimental observation when reducing to a three-level atomic system. The analytical model can be used to easily fit the experimental observations of self-Kerr nonlinearity in a five-level atomic system under different temperature conditions and apply to a variety of applications relating to all-optical-switching techniques.

Enhanced Kerr nonlinear effect of Raman transition in a Λ-type three-level atomic system

Haibin Wu, Chang Hong, Ma Jie +3 more

We report a theoretical study of linear and nonlinear susceptibilities of Raman transition in a Λ-type three-level atomic system. In the Raman transition, if t he population of atoms is all prepared in the ground state which interacts with the control light, the linear susceptibility equals zero, while the third-order nonlinear susceptibility does not equal zero. By decreasing the nonradiative dec ay rate γ12 between the two ground states of the atoms, the Kerr no nlinear refractive index for cross-phase modulation can be significantly enhance d.

Enhancing Kerr nonlinearity via spontaneously generated coherence

钮月萍, 龚尚庆

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the effect of spontaneously generated coherence on the Kerr nonlinearity of general three-level systems of Lambda, ladder, and V-shape types. It is found, with spontaneously generated coherence present, that the Kerr nonlinearity can be clearly enhanced. In the Lambda- and ladder-type systems, the maximal Kerr nonlinearity increases and at the same time enters the electromagnetically induced transparency window as the spontaneously generated coherence intensifies. As for the V-type system, the absorption property is significantly modified and therefore enhanced Kerr nonlinearity without absorption occurs for certain probe detunings. We attribute the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity mainly to the presence of an extra atomic coherence induced by the spontaneously generated coherence.

Effective cross-Kerr Hamiltonian for a nonresonant four-level atom

Gary F. Sinclair, Natalia Korolkova

We derive an effective cross-Kerr Hamiltonian for the four-level atom interacting with three electromagnetic fields in the $N$ configuration. When the atom has relaxed into the ground state, a cross-Kerr nonlinearity arises between two weak probe fields. As a development on earlier work, we derive the form of the atom-field interaction for all detunings and include the spontaneous decay of the upper atomic levels. In general, the atom will also display a linear and self-Kerr response, but if certain resonance conditions are satisfied then only the cross-Kerr interaction will remain. We consider the application of our theory to cold four-level rubidium atoms. The electrical susceptibilities of the probe transitions are explored, and it is shown that a large, pure cross-Kerr nonlinearity can be generated with vanishing absorption of both probe fields.

Enhancement of cross-Kerr nonlinearity in four-level N-type atomic sysem based on electromagnetically induced transparency

Nguyen Le Thuy An, Vu Ngọc Sau, Doan Hoai Son

We study enhancement of cross-Kerr nonlinearity in four-level N-type atomic system by the analytical method. The results apply to the 87Rb atoms and show that in the presence of the EIT effect (i.e., the presence of coupling laser field), the Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced several order of magnitudes (about 10-6 cm2/W) around the EIT window. That is, on the Kerr nonlinear graph the two positive and negative values are found on both sides of the resonant frequency. The amplitude and sign of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient can be controlled versus the intensity or frequency of the coupling laser field. Analytical results are useful for experimental observation and related applications.
