We present a family of simple three-dimensional stabilizer codes, called the chiral color codes, that realize fermionic and chiral topological orders. In the qubit case, the code realizes the topological phase of a single copy of the fermionic toric code. For qudit systems with local dimension d , the model features a chiral parameter α and realizes 3D topological phases characterized by Z d ( α ) anyon theories with anomalous chiral surface topological order. On closed manifolds, the code has a unique ground state after removing bulk transparent fermions or bosons. Furthermore, we prove that the bulk is short-range entangled (for odd d , coprime α ) by constructing an explicit local quantum channel that prepares the ground state. The chiral color codes are constructed within the gauge color code and hence inherit its fault-tolerant features: they admit single-shot error correction and allow code switching to other stabilizer color codes. These properties position the chiral color codes as particularly useful platforms for realizing and manipulating fermions and chiral anyons.
Stabilizer codes provide exact lattice realizations of bosonic topological orders. In contrast, systematic stabilizer descriptions of intrinsically fermionic topological phases remain much less developed. In this work, we introduce Majorana-Pauli stabilizer codes, a class of exactly solvable fermionic lattice models whose stabilizers are built from both generalized Pauli operators and Majorana operators. As a main example, we construct an exactly solvable stabilizer realization of the fermionic toric code: an intrinsically fermionic
Z2 topological order in
(2+1) dimensions, using
Z8 Pauli operators coupled to Majorana modes. Within this stabilizer framework, the anyons, string operators, fusion rules, and braiding statistics all follow naturally from the stabilizer algebra. More broadly, we show that the fermionic toric code belongs to a duality web generated by anyon condensation and by gauging or ungauging bosonic or fermionic symmetries. This web connects bosonic topological orders, symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases, and both bosonic and fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases, all within a common stabilizer description. We extend this construction to all Abelian fermionic topological orders with gapped boundaries and to fermionic SPT phases whose fully gauged theories are Abelian. Going beyond Majorana operators, we introduce fermionic versions of the clock and shift operators and use them to construct an exact bosonization map for
ZDF symmetries for
D even. Using this, we realize a stabilizer model for a nontrivial
Z8F fermionic SPT phase with no free-fermion analog. Altogether, these results extend the stabilizer-code paradigm to a broad class of intrinsically fermionic phases bridging fermionic quantum many-body physics to quantum error correction.

The color code model is a crucial instance of a Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS)-type topological quantum error-correcting code, which notably supports transversal implementation of the full Clifford group. Its robustness against local noise is rooted in the structure of its topological excitations. From the perspective of quantum phases of matter, it is essential to understand these excitations in the thermodynamic limit. In this work, we analyze the color code model on an infinite lattice within the quasi-local
C∗-algebra framework, using a cone-localized Doplicher-Haag-Roberts (DHR) analysis. We classify its irreducible anyon superselection sectors and construct explicit string operators that generate anyonic excitations from the ground state. We further examine the fusion and braiding properties of these excitations. Our results show that the topological order of the color code is described by
Rep(D(Z2×Z2))≃Rep(D(Z2))⊠Rep(D(Z2)), which is equivalent to a double layer of the toric code and consistent with established analyses on finite lattices. We also establish the existence and uniqueness of the KMS state at every finite inverse temperature and derive an explicit description of the corresponding thermal distribution of stabilizer excitations.
Topological quantum field theory (TQFT) provides a unifying framework for describing topological phases of matter and for constructing quantum error-correcting codes, playing a central role across high-energy physics, condensed matter, and quantum information. A central challenge is to formulate topological order on lattices and to extract the properties of topological excitations from microscopic Hamiltonians. In this work, we construct new classes of lattice gauge theories as Pauli stabilizer models, realizing a wide range of TQFTs in general dimensions. We develop a lattice description of extended excitations and systematically determine their generalized statistics. Our main example is the (4+1)D fermionic-loop toric code, obtained by condensing the
e2m2-loop in the (4+1)D
Z4 toric code. We show that the loop excitation exhibits fermionic loop statistics: the 24-step loop-flipping process yields a phase of
−1. Our Pauli stabilizer models realize all twisted 2-form gauge theories in (4+1)D, the higher-form Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFT classified by
H5(B2G,U(1)). Beyond (4+1)D, the fermionic-loop toric codes form a family of
Z2 topological orders in arbitrary dimensions, realized as explicit Pauli stabilizer codes using
Z4 qudits. Finally, we develop a Pauli-based framework that defines generalized statistics for extended excitations in any dimension, yielding computable lattice unitary processes to detect nontrivial statistics. For example, we propose anyonic membrane statistics in (6+1)D, as well as fermionic membrane and volume statistics in arbitrary dimensions. We construct new families of
Z2 topological orders: the fermionic-membrane toric code and the fermionic-volume toric code. In addition, we demonstrate that
p-dimensional excitations in
2p+2 spatial dimensions can support anyonic
p-brane statistics for only even
p.
Topologically ordered phases naturally realize quantum error correction through nonlocal encoding of quantum information. More recently, conformal field theories have been shown to realize approximate quantum error-correcting codes, but such constructions generally require fine tuning to criticality. Here we introduce a family of approximate quantum error-correcting codes realized by the chiral edges of two-dimensional topologically ordered phases. The proposed encoding combines the robustness of a gapped topological bulk with the flexibility of gapless edge conformal field theories. To characterize its robustness, we study coherent-information loss under local erasure. We derive an exact expression relating coherent-information loss to relative entropy, reducing the recoverability problem to universal properties of the edge theory. This leads to power-law scaling of coherent-information loss with the size of the erased region. We further show that, for geometrically local erasures near one edge, the two-dimensional chiral edge code is at least as robust as the dimensionally reduced CFT code, and is strictly more robust in several representative examples. For Abelian code subspaces, we further construct a power-law-range recovery map supported on the erased region together with a power-law-range buffer; this recovery map depends only on the code subspace, not on the unknown encoded state. We provide numerical calculations for lattice realizations of compact free boson and Ising CFT examples that support the theoretical predictions of the power-law exponents.
We construct a novel three-dimensional quantum cellular automaton (QCA) based on a system with short-range entangled bulk and chiral semion boundary topological order. We argue that either the QCA is nontrivial, i.e., not a finite-depth circuit of local quantum gates, or there exists a two-dimensional commuting projector Hamiltonian realizing the chiral semion topological order [characterized by U(1) 2 Chern-Simons theory].Our QCA is obtained by first constructing the Walker-Wang Hamiltonian of a certain premodular tensor category of order four, then condensing the deconfined bulk boson at the level of lattice operators. We show that the resulting Hamiltonian hosts chiral semion surface topological order in the presence of a boundary and can be realized as a non-Pauli stabilizer code on qubits, from which the QCA is defined. The construction is then generalized to a class of QCAs defined by non-Pauli stabilizer codes on 2 n -dimensional qudits that feature surface anyons described by U(1) 2 n Chern-Simons theory. Our results support the conjecture that the group of nontrivial three-dimensional QCAs is isomorphic to the Witt group of nondegenerate braided fusion categories.
